The choice I made – baptism

Last Sunday I was in a meeting, where about 20 young people were baptised.

The service before the baptism was one that made me remember – or understand more – what it means to be baptized. I couldn’t help start taking notes.

Baptism of John, and baptized into Christ

In Paul’s days, he met someone who only knew about the baptism of John(Act 18:25-28) – baptited into forgiveness of sin, but did not who the baptizsm in Christ.

With Christ, our sins are forgiven when we make up our mind to follow him. But when we are baptized by water, we are baptized into Christ, baptized into His death. (Romans 6:1) We are crucified with Him (6:6).

We are buried with Christ, we put off the body of sin of the flesh, by the circumsicision of Christ (Colossians 2:11).

Baptisam of water is followed by Baptism of fire – the Holy Spirit. With the Spirit, we become one with Christ, and become a part of His body. We enter into the process of sanctification – by overcoming sin in our flesh.

Sanctification – be renewed in spirit and mind

We put off the old man and be renewed in Spirit and mind. We cloth with the new man – created according to the likeness of God. (Ephesians 4:19-21)

And then we are preparing ourselves to become Jesus’ bride: Her fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints – us who follow Him. (Rev 19:7-8).

Train yourself in godliness!

Like Timothy, we are to train ourselves in godliness. (1 Timothy 4:7). How weak we are is not a problem for God when it comes to overcoming sin. God guarantees our success. But problem for God is that we want a few things at the same time – both things in the world, and a life in Christ.

How did Paul train himself in godliness? He ran as if only one wins the prize. ( 1 Cor 9:25-25).

We have to be careful in our thought life – then God comes and gives us victory, victory, victory.

When we are baptized by the Holy Spirit, our sin doesn’t get taken away from us – far from it.

Therefore we, like Paul, have to train ourselves in Godliness.

This is the covenant I have made with God, when I got baptized more than 2 years ago.
