Spirit, Soul and Body – the Tripartite nature of Man

"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."
(1 Thessalonians 5:23)

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being [nephesh – soul]."
(Genesis 2:7)

Man is a tri-partite being – spirit, soul and body. It is with his spirit that a man worships, and may contact God. The soul includes the conscious and subconscious minds, the realm of emotions and the will. Soul gives a man personality, self-awareness, rationality and natural feeling. The body is a complex physical creation by which a person relates to this world and to other people in the world. We now know that every person's body is in large measure a product of their DNA code which exists in every cell of the body to program its amazing development. As marvellous as the body may be, man has a non-physical aspect which consists of a different kind of materiality – spirit. It is this part of man that is eternal.

Man is described as a living soul (Genesis 2:7 KJV), which came into being at first by the breath of God (spirit) being breathed into a creation of the dust of the earth. Man is an intricate unity as well as being a three part being. For this reason, whatever happens in one part of a man's being has repercussions in other areas as well. For example, it is well known that a healthy, fit body is conducive to an upbeat attitude in the soul. The Book of Proverbs states that "a man's spirit will sustain him in sickness". "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine". Psalm 32 describes how unconfessed sin caused David's "bones to grow old", his "vitality to be turned into the drought of summer".

There are plenty of other examples that can be given of how all these aspects of man effect one another. It is a scientific fact. Obviously much valuable research could be done into the relationship between spirit, soul and body. Such research has its perils, of course, since when we start probing such deep mysteries without the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we may obtain knowledge and power that would bring forth the fruits of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and not of God's life. The whole study of psychology, however is something which needs to be brought under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the authority of God's Word. If Christians simply retreat totally from this area and allow the ungodly to set the pace then much will be lost. On the other hand, to unquestioningly accept the precepts of much modern psychology is to invite the shipwreck of our faith. Furthermore, the use of psychological principles divorced from a true submission to the Holy Spirit could result in powerful deception and the rejection of the Lord who bought us.

God is interested in all three portions of our being – spirit, soul and body. The Bible says concerning our Savior, "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature , and in favor with God and men." (Luke 2:52). This reveals the importance of our mental and emotional development , our physical prowess, our spiritual life with God of worship and communion, and our social interractions with others. God is interested in all of these, and the Bible gives us keys for our development in these areas.

The verse quoted above from 1 Thessalonians supports the view that God is interested in our sanctification – spirit, soul and body. To become like Jesus, to be children of God by nature as well as by adoption, we need to allow God to do this work of sanctification.

Sanctification begins when the spirit of man is recreated through the new birth (John 3:3). The majority of people in this world have their spirits "dead" to God (Ephesians 2:2). That is not to deny that a few may have developed various psychic powers by the operation of soul force or demonic spirits. Yet even such people cannot truly relate to Almighty God – that is, the transcendant creator God for whom, by whom and to whom are all things. Never allow philosophers to confuse you by suggesting that God is the same as "the Universe". No, God stands outside of the Universe as well as inside it. He is the Creator of all things. He is not "one with all things" and neither are you, nor will you ever be. These "New Age" philosophies are just what the devil would want men to believe. In believing them, a person not only denies the existence of the personal devil which has deceived thm, but also renounces his or her need for Jesus Christ as Savior and rejects Him as Lord. In doing so, they reject the true Kingdom of God and become a candidate for subjection in one of Satan's worldly kingdoms.

God is not only Transcendant. He is Immanent. That is to say, He is here. It is true that God is personally and actually within a true Christian believer. "Do you not know that Jesus Christ is in you, unless indeed you fail the test?" (2 Corinthians 13:5; see also Galatians 2:20; 1 Corinthians 6:19). This a marvellous truth and there is much unexplored and wonderful territory that God may lead us into along these lines. But again, do not be confused by those who say that God is within "us all". He is not. If He is, then the gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible is a hideous lie. The Bible reveals a need for man to be reconciled to God in one way only – and that is through faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ, where Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice to bring us to God. To deny this is to call the Bible and the Jesus Christ of the Bible a lie, in favor of the shifting and double-talking philosophies which trade in the souls of men to their eternal destruction. Yes, this is serious. And if you would object that I am being "narrow minded" you are simply indicating your anti-biblical conditioning and the fact that truly the prince of this world, in whose power lies the world, already has your mind in large measure in his grasp already – though you neither know it nor recognise it. Only the Word of God, coming to you in the true power of the Holy Spirit, will ever be able to set you free from this fatal delusion.

Let us return to the theme of sanctification. One thing is the desire of the Holy Spirit for us, and the other is the way our own souls would seek to go about fulfilling our needs, wants and desires. Paul the apostle referred to the latter way as "the flesh". Paul said, "the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh; and these things are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish" (Galatians 5:17). The key to successful Christian living is actually to learn to progressively renounce our own soulish devices and allow our minds to be retrained by the Holy Spirit. This can be very painful at times, and leads to an actual and ongoing "death" – to use biblical language. Yet the fruit of it is the very peace we are craving as a foundation for our emotional existence. We also find the revelation of the love of God to us and through us as we learn to submit to the Holy Spirit. Many other fruits come, they are listed in Galatians 5:22,23. The Holy Spirit will also empower us to reveal a portion of the attributes of God through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This is a definite part of the plan of God for every true child of God. The denial of this has robbed the Body of Christ of more than it will ever be possible to calculate. We claim that God lives in us. Why is so little happening then? If God unwilling to reveal through us what He declares to be the case in His Holy Word, the Bible?

Our spirit, souls and bodies need to be offered to God. This does not take away our responsibility before God, neither our will. Every day is an opportunity to embrace the cross and to experience the resurrection, and "faith" and "love" will lead us to do so every time.

God's Will for Our Bodies

I want to mention three things that are clearly God's will for our bodies. Getting these right will make a tremendous difference to our spiritual as well as our emotional life.

1. Sexual Purity

"This is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain friom sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God … For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has given us His Holy Spirit." (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5,7,8).

If sexual purity was not so important, Satan would not work so hard to destroy it wherever he can find people who will sell out. Sexual purity is important for our communion with God. God definitely wants Christians to abstain from masturbation and all kinds of lustful fantasies, as well as the more serious sexual sins such as fornication (two unmarried people having a sexual connection), adultery and sodomy. To refuse to do so is to reject God. Yes, there is forgiveness from God when we violate these principles, but there is also a price to pay in lost opportunity to enjoy the sweet presence of God which comes to the pure in heart. It is a lie to think that what we do with our bodies does not affect our souls, nor our spirits.

2.Physical Health

"Beloved I wish above all things that you prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers" wrote the beloved apostle John in his third letter, verse 2. There are many Scriptures which indicate that God's will is for us to have healthy bodies. Sickness is a result of the fall and is the specialty of Satan. Jesus healed "all who were oppressed by the devil" (Acts 10:38) and even those whom his disciples failed to heal, such as the boy with the epileptic demon in Matthew 17:14-21). This indicates that even when Christians cannot get someone healed because of unbelief (vs 20), it is still the will of God to heal them. Its a bitter pill for Christians and ministers to hear that their unbelief is preventing God's miracles, but it is a very relevant word in an age where much of the professing church would be surprised if God did anything beyond what medical doctors could see as possibilities.

3.Physical Fitness

"For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things" (1 Timothy 4:8).

Let's not forget that Jesus worked as a carpenter and would have been physically strong. This in part enabled him to fast 40 days. Paul went through a lot physically and I am sure he trained his body. He said that he buffeted his body and brings it into subjection so that when he has preached to others he would not himself be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:27). If our bodies are not strengthened through exericise they will go to sleep on us when we need to be alert or diligent. They will also create in our souls a kind of depression which taints our being and makes us less attractive as Christians.

A note on Physical Beauty: The Bible records the fact that many of its characters were good-looking. Others apparently were not. Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Esther were all known as physically beautiful women. Its obvious that men generally prefer physically beautiful women, all other things being equal. David, Joseph and Moses were all referred to as good looking, handsome or beautiful. Being physically beautiful attracts greater temptations to immorality, whereas being less attractive brings another set of temptations. God would like us to look our best, but not to put too much effort into what is, in eternal terms, a lost cause. We can develop a spiritual beauty and beauty of personality which will have eternal value. Its better for those who don't focus too much on the way they look, because looking to the wrong things for happiness can make us miserable.

Obviously not all of us are entrusted with the same measure of the gift of physical beauty. It is a gift highly prized in the world. Many people, even physically beautiful people, reject themselves because they don't like how they look. Our physical imperfections are permitted to remind us that we are fallen, we are not perfect, and we need to look for something better.

While our appearance can be improved in various ways, it is not as important as other things, and should not be an obsession. I am not against even cosmetic surgery in some cases if it would help a person to get their focus off their bodies. Yet God does not want us to condition our happiness upon the way we look. We will look better when we get our resurrection bodies (Romans 8:23). The Bible teaches us to focus not on the things which as seen and temporary, but on the unseen, eternal things (2 Corinthians 4:18). When people show that they cannot be happy without trying to look as much like a model for cosmetics as possible, they reveal a worldly focus. However, it is just as wrong to neglect the body and its appearance to try to be more spiritual.. After all, Jesus wants a bride without spot, wrinkle or blemish! Our natural bodies can be made to look better but we are better off the less time we spend worrying about this and looking in the mirror.

God's Will for Our Souls

God wants us to think on good things. Philippians 4:8 says, "Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things." This word needs to be taken seriously. There is a considerable scope for freedom and lattitude in this instruction. Yes, our minds should be on Jesus – He is all those things, and certainly, by filling our minds with the Word of God we can do this also. However, there are many good things in this world we can meditate on – things in nature, things in people – the nobility of purpose and heart that we may find or read of from time to time. These things are the gifts of God to us, and God wants us to meditate on them – to feed our subsconscious minds with them. This will help us become happy people.

Once you know your particular life calling from God, it is good to study and ponder all good and noble things which relate especially to this calling. "As a man thinks in his heart, so he is" (Proverbs 23:7). We often spend much of our time worrying when we should be praising God and thinking on good things. It requires effort to discipline the mind but truly the results are worth it. Strangely, physical discipline can be a major key also to disciplining the mind.

The Spiritual Life

Some people are stronger than others, but in the end, all of us need God to be a contunual stream of life for us. Mostly, we are just living off the dregs, off the leftovers and God wants us to embrace the rivers of living water that only He can give. The Bible tells us, "Be continually filled with the Holy Spirit." That is God's will for us. Its a pretty serious sin actually to neglect this commandment of God. It is impossible to maintain this fulness without developing a life of prayer and also the discipline of quietening the soul and waiting upon God. This is another vast subject in itself.

Meditation on the Word feeds both our spirit and soul. The more you repeat one small portion of Scripture to yourself, the more profoundly it will impact you. Many Christians, myself included, have a far greater breadth of intellectual knowledge concerning God's word, than a true heart knowledge of what the Word was pointing us to in Jesus. Biblical meditation, repeating and muttering and thinking on one thing repetitively, is a key to prosperity and success (see Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:1-3). Psychologically and neurologically, it has been proven scientifically that repetition of a phrase causes more parts of the brain to be used. This shows it is entering into us more deeply. If you trust the Word of God, allow it to enter deeply into you through meditation.

The Inner Witness of the Human Spirit

God's Spirit does not always tell us what we need to do by means of an inner voice. We can get into trouble if we demand or expect God's voice to come immediately in answer to our questions, especially if we are not in an attitude of true spiritual worship and waiting upon God. Nor can we afford to allow our life direction to be guided by prophetic words from others. These generally strengthen but do not initiate the purposes of God in our lives.

We will do better, as Christians, if we learn to listen to the inner witness of our own regenerated human spirits. "The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart" (Proverbs 20:27). Your spirit knows things that your mind does not. The Holy Spirit knows even more than our human spirits, and can enlighten us on any point should He wish to speak with us, as long as we are listening to Him. However, generally it is through the regenerated spirit of man that we know what is the way to go on a particular issue. Of course we should still pray and ask God, but it is generally in this way that the answer comes.

May God cause you to develop in wisdom and stature, and favor with God and men.

Much more has been and ought to be written on the nature of man. This is just a small introduction to this vast topic. Please pray for me, that the Lord will relelase me and empower me to write more for the building up of the Body of Christ.

What do YOU think?

About Michael Fackerell

The Christian faith is about Jesus. He came to save the lost. About Jesus Christ, Bible teaching, Testimonies, Salvation, Prayer, Faith, Networking.

  1. I didn’t read all the posts on this page but I skimmed over them & think I got the gist of some of the conversation. I’ve been a Christian 20 years and have went through a lot of head trips let me tell you. Recently though, I’ve come to terms with several things.

ONe, the Kingdom of heaven is within you. It’s Christ in you. His sheep hear His voice. We are to listen to the spirit of God within our own hearts. Sometimes God will use circumstances or others to speak to us, but I don’t think we’re supposed to run around talking about it. In fact, the longer I go the less I listen to every joe blow and pay closer attention to the Word of God and the Spirt within myself. I also find myself talking less to others about the truths I am soaking in.

Two, I’m learning to really keep my mouth shut & quit meddling in the lives of others. This may be a personal issue that God is dealing with me over, but I’ve gotten a lot of peace from just shutting up. I think a lot of so called prophets could benefit from doing the same. Be careful listening to people. Take counsel from the elder Christians you know and keep your mouth shut. That’s the best advice I can give anyone today. All these teachers and writers are worrisome. For what it’s worth to any of you, I hope it helps as you sort through all this stuff everywhere. By the way, the article is wonderful. Thanks.

  2. Although I do not know much about her personal life and that of her husband, I read her book “he came to set the captive free”. This book caused alot of problems for her, as she was outlining the truth behind all these institution. Be it a made up story which obviously blew most of us minds, these are real events taking place in the world. What I found amazing was that most christians criticized her book because it all sound like ‘fairy tale’. If so be the case isn’t the bible all fairy tale?

Read her books with an open mind the same way you would read the bible.

  3. David Wilkerson Urgently Warns Re Earth-Shattering Calamity

Many thanks to ‘BB’ for letting us know about this. He said:

“Today Pastor and Watchman David Wilkerson has sent out an URGENT MESSAGE. I post it from Wilkerson’s blogspot: http://davidwilkersontoday.blogspot.com/2009/03/urgent-message.html

DW is listened to and read by thousands around the world. He would not release this ‘word’ unless compelled by the Holy Spirit. We have confirmation on this blog that the time to prepare is NOW. The prophets and watchmen agree. Watch and pray and prepare as God leads you.”

{Message from David Wilkerson follows] –

    “Saturday, March 7, 2009

I am compelled by the Holy Spirit to send out an urgent message to all on our mailing list, and to friends and to bishops we have met all over the world.

For ten years I have been warning about a thousand fires coming to New York City. It will engulf the whole megaplex, including areas of New Jersey and Connecticut. Major cities all across America will experience riots and blazing fires—such as we saw in Watts, Los Angeles, years ago.

There will be riots and fires in cities worldwide. There will be looting—including Times Square, New York City. What we are experiencing now is not a recession, not even a depression. We are under God’s wrath. In Psalm 11 it is written,

“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (v. 3).

God is judging the raging sins of America and the nations. He is destroying the secular foundations.

The prophet Jeremiah pleaded with wicked Israel, “God is fashioning a calamity against you and devising a plan against you. Oh, turn back each of you from your evil way, and reform your ways and deeds. But they will say, It’s hopeless! For we are going to follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart” (Jeremiah 18:11-12).

In Psalm 11:6, David warns, “Upon the wicked he will rain snares (coals of fire)…fire…burning wind…will be the portion of their cup.” Why? David answered, “Because the Lord is righteous” (v. 7). This is a righteous judgment—just as in the judgments of Sodom and in Noah’s generation.

First, I give you a practical word I received for my own direction. If possible lay in store a thirty-day supply of non-perishable food, toiletries and other essentials. In major cities, grocery stores are emptied in an hour at the sign of an impending disaster.

As for our spiritual reaction, we have but two options. This is outlined in Psalm 11. We “flee like a bird to a mountain.” Or, as David says, “He fixed his eyes on the Lord on his throne in heaven—his eyes beholding, his eyelids testing the sons of men” (v. 4). “In the Lord I take refuge” (v. 1).

I will say to my soul: No need to run…no need to hide. This is God’s righteous work. I will behold our Lord on his throne, with his eye of tender, loving kindness watching over every step I take—trusting that he will deliver his people even through floods, fires, calamities, tests, trials of all kinds.

Note: I do not know when these things will come to pass, but I know it is not far off. I have unburdened my soul to you. Do with the message as you choose.

    God bless and keep you,

    In Christ,

    • gate007 says:

      Hey Doug:

DW gave this “thousand fire” prophecy some time back in the mid 90’s if I recall correctly. I think he said the fires would hit New York and never did? Hmm?

Gotta watch this guy because he accurately saw a vision in the late 70’s of a black box sitting on top of a TV and he said it would open the field of pornography like never before. He was right. Nobody else back then prophesied this.

If you google DW false prophecies there’s many listed he stated would happen and by his own admittance he later said they were not from God, that he had repented and said they were false and that he must have operated out of fear. Now I’ll give the guy credit for being honest of his failure. DW has done a lot for the Lord and his timely book “The Cross and the Switchblade”. I admit I do not know him or his ministry per se.

Anyways……..I’ve seen this kind of word from him before. I’ll have to go back and check on him. It’s been awhile.

Don’t take this as a criticism. Only a comment for discussion. Others may have some good input as we all try to discern what God is saying to us today by those who speak for Him. Sorting this out is no easy task. Trust me. I had done by now if it was.

      • “Sorting it all out is no easy task”

Man, that is a VAST understatement!! I spend literally HOURS intensely Googling everything I can think of, and even more hour watching Youtube videos, listening to prophecies, etc,

Most nights, I am up till the wee morning hours, as tonight, for example.
I am EXTREMELY hungry for the truth and to just GET TO THE BOTTOM of things.

(I know I probably never will, but I try)

Through the internet, I am made aware of hundreds of things going on in the body of Christ that I would have had NO INKLING of without it.

Through the internet, I find out about various teachers, prophets, movements, and everything else under the collective, religious sun.

You have to understand that I live in a small, hick town, and we are really quite isolated from all these things. In that sense, you could call me a country boy who, through the medium of the internet, gets to visit the big city every night, if I may use an analogy.

I had never even heard of Todd Bentley and the Lakeland revival until a few weeks ago!!! And most of you folks were onto this for a long time. I am struggling to catch up with the times, brothers.

The more I Google, (my best friend) the more I learn new names whom were complete strangers to my mind.

The more I become cognizant of, as far as what’s going on in the church world, the more it drives me into Personal Bible study and prayer with the desperate plea “Lord, PLEASE show me what’s real and what’s false!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

So many, many wolves out there, and this sheep does NOT want to get eaten alive!!! Who can I trust????

I am doing everything in my power to preserve my eternal soul in these perilous last days in which we have been placed.

I literally fall asleep each night praying with all my heart and strength, and clutching my precious King James Bible to my heart.

Yes, you heard it right, I sleep with my Bible. I have nothing else since my wife died. After she died, for a long time I fell asleep covering my self with her coat, clutching her pajamas. But I out-grew that, or the Lord removed it from me. one or the other.

I’m just a little guy in a big world.

        Sometimes I feel so lost.

        • In the past , many especially on this site have mentioned , Wilkerson as a person who never prophesises wrong.

But the recent article , shows that at time , he does err in his prophecy.

Can anyone come out with a list of
          true and false prophets ?

Is there anyone of the order of Samuelor or Isaiah or Jeremiah or Ezekiel in today’s modern world ?

Pray heavens , let out your secrets !!!

          • michael says:

The only one I know of that I have never known to err would be T.B. Joshua. in Lagos, Nigeria. That does not mean he does not err, just that I have not become aware of it until now.

          • Of course, we are taught that if they are not 100% accurate, according to the scripture, they are then a false prophet. No exceptions to the rule, according to scripture.

I can’t argue with that, because it is indeed scriptural. That particular scripture, leaves ZERO room for any of them to err. It’s a draconian rule. Strict to the letter!

If we conclude that any given man is a false prophet because we can point out errors or prophecies that failed to come true, then we must include EVERY one of them in on the rule. No room for favoritism. The same scriptural standard must apply to all, in spite of personal biases. It is an all inclusive standard.

If T.B Joshua has not erred, he is indeed a true prophet of the Lord. But the moment he errs, we are compelled to lump him in with the group that includes Copeland, Benny Hinn, etc.

Some time Before my wife died, I had made some prophecies over her, and I want to tell you, I felt a powerful anointing, and I said, bold, amazing things that were simply not me! I spoke in the power, unction and anointing of the Holy Spirit. the voice that came out of me thundered with the power of God! It was not meek, timid Doug speaking, it was indeed the Holy one of Israel saying thus saith the Lord!

Then she died. Not one of my prophecies concerning her came to pass. Well, the standard applies to me too. That makes me a false prophet. Correct?

Since that time, I have never uttered a single prophecy concerning any one. Her death and the subsequent failure of my prophetic utterances left a grievous mortal wound in my spirit.

I think it literally broke my heart beyond repair.

          • JustAGuy says:

Doug, I cannot fathom the depths of the pain of that situation, however . . .

When we were childless, and shortly after my wife was healed of a condition that made us both forget about having children, my wife felt she had a sure word from the Lord that she would be having twins in November. She miscarried and our heads went into a spin. “How can I trust God?”, “Why would God speak to me in that manner, and then have it all go south?”, “Why would God let an evil spirit answer my prayer?” “Am I really in relationship with God in the first place?” yada yada yada….

Deu 13:1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
            Deu 13:2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
Deu 13:3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
Deu 13:4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

Prophecies are not what is important. Loving God, cleaving to Him and keeping His commandments is what is important.

Upshot, “there was a day when the sons of God came before God and Satan came among them…” The devil mimicks the Holy Spirit and can remake every feel-good emotion and power, etc. Our sure Word is written in black and white, and red and white.

I do not trust any prophet today. Do I think they are evil? Not all. I think God has told us all we need to know to attain His Kingdom. Stay in His Word and realize it was not God who spoke through you, just like when we say something in anger and it is not God speaking through us. We must repent and move on. I think it has been wise of you to resist prophesying. I am truly sorry for your loss.

            Blessings and Peace,

          • It’s not that I am resisting prophesying..it’s just that I don’t think I could find the strength, the heart to ever, ever, EVER have my heart broken in two like that again. The pain in me goes unfathomably deep. it cost me my precious baby..my sweetheart, my wife. Those are deep wounds..no, they are GASHES in my spirit man that just won’t heal.

So, I’m still trying to be healed from the first time. Yes, I trust God, supremely and ultimately..but I no longer trust myself, you see, and I place precious little stock in “prophets of the Lord”. I am extremely cautious and wary.

You might even say I’m skittish and gun shy.

            Can you see why?

Let me make another point. Simply put, as far as prophets, the proverbial boy has cried wolf so MANY times, that I don’t think even God Himself can blame us for leaning toward the thinking that it is all probably lies and hogwash.

Oh, I WANT to believe!!! I want to trust!!! But after hearing a plethora of lies and errors how can that be even humanly possible? And the irony of it all is this: One day, one of them is going to be the real deal with a real word from God. But the boy has cried wolf a thousand times, and we probably wont believe the real deal when he actually comes along with an authentic word from the Lord. Can God blame us?

Isn’t that deplorable? Isn’t that pitiful?

          • Doug, God loves you. His Word the Bible is reliable.

You will find that God answers prayer as you continue along.

Even though your wife did not receive a miracle healing in this life, no doubt she is with the Lord enjoying a pain-free and joyous time with her Lord in heaven.

            And you will meet again.

The things that count the MOST are the eternal things.

Truly, we cannot fully know the Kingdom of God in this age. Its only in part. We only get a taste.

          • Sherymac says:

I just want to submit my understanding of why bad things still happen even amidst a prophecy of the opposite. Could it be that perhaps with personal prophesies there are certain ingredients needed, and if the correct ingredients have not happened (prayer, declarations, commanding of the enemy to get his hands off, etc) then the word does not happen. Perhaps people were called into the battle, but didn’t obey. Sometimes the enemy does win although we know that at the end he hasn’t “won” anything. The best battle for the enemy to win is the one that has destroyed the Christian: they are now hopeless and not using their faith so they will be powerless to win the next time.
Perhaps grieving of a loss of someone precious is still happening resulting in these feelings. Perhaps you could also let the personal achievements go too, and grieve, but put on the Spirit of Christ. As you pray and ask, God will equip you. Pray even when you don’t feel like it, because of the hope you know should be there. Your faith is still there and you need to exercise it or it could die. If these words are true you will know it, if they are not, let them go. Put your faith in God above all. Hope you have seen some good things happening in your life in the last few months.

          • I do not believe that 100% correctness is required in prophecy otherwise one is a “false prophet”. Not in the New Testament. Even the prophet Agabus did not get it 100% right – read Acts 21:11 and compare with Acts 21:33. Who bound Paul in fact? Was it the Jews or the Romans?

The Bible says “we know in part and prophecy in part” (1 Corinthians 13) and “we all stumble in many ways”.

James 3:2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.

I do not believe that God has prophets today whose words can be considered as reliable as Scripture. Otherwise I suppose the New Testament Canon could not be closed.

At the same time God takes pleasure in a personal and intimate relationship where He communicates with us by means of words.

We need to cut people some slack as long as they are humble enough to take correction.

1Th 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit.
1Th 5:20 Do not despise prophecies.
1Th 5:21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.
1Th 5:22 Abstain from every form of evil.

Why test all things including prophecy if there is no chance of error? And how can you ever receive the good in someone’s prophetic ministry if their first mistake makes them a “false prophet”?

            Some food for thought anyway.

I am not advocating a prophetic “free for all” such as we see on the Internet and in some pulpits – at the same time neither can I endorse the harsh and literal application of Deuteronomy 18:20-22 either. For one thing, we are not called to put our brethren to death like that if they fail to prophesy with 100% accuracy. Let’s be realistic and take into account the whole New Testament picture. Something has changed here. Especially take a look at 1 Corinthians 14 and ask yourself how Paul could have possibly encouraged the Corinthians to prophesy?!

Obviously I am not seeking to address the painful situation you went through Doug so much as one aspect which touches on it.

          • Michael..after reading that,I think I just want to give up. It’s futile. I’m just a little guy sinking in the quagmire of truth vs lies. It appears there is no black and white. It’s all gray, and my finite human brain just can not grasp it any more.

I read and memorize scriptures from dawn to dusk. I pray desperately and seek God as if my very life and eternal soul depends on it…but I see that I am no further along than I was when I started years ago.

          • Hey Bro Dough ,

I’ve been in this 19 years and there are days I swear I have not changed a bit or am no farther than I was 10 years ago. It’s about that time I just wanna throw in the towel. Bro…if this was easy everybody would do it.

Remember…a lot of people come to Jesus…fewer stay.

However, I have the knowledge and experience that if I hang on long enough and stay on path…God shows up and moves me to another level of glory. Sometimes it will come back to back. Other times there’s a 6 month wait. Other times there is a 2 year wait. It don’t matter cuz sooner or later the Boss of bosses shows up, often unannounced and just gets all over me. Man…when I am cloaked with a strong anointing, I change. I have learned that all my best efforts are futile unless I have the presence of God on me.

How long do these episodes last? Sometimes a day, a few days, few weeks and a couple of times I flowed in a supernatural presence of God for 3-4 months.

Do I wish God would move on me like this 24/7? You bet but he does not. It seems to be somewhat cyclic. I go thru seasons.

Remember. Growth doesn’t happen at the top of the mountain. It happens down in the valley.

Put that in you bong and hit it!

          • I’m listening. Keep talking to me.

I can taste the fear in this word and I do not react to fear….

We need to pray as a nation to repent of all of our sins beginning in the church and then outward…

As far as storing up supplies this is just good sense since we will continue to spiral downward…

For the past few months I have been buying extra and putting them away….

I will not dismiss this word from DW but I will not cringe in fear…With time, we will know if it was the Lord who spoke this into DW or another ……..

          • DW has erred before due to fear. He has expected God’s judgments to arrive before they actually did.

Now even secular pundits like Gerald Celente are predicting social unrest, tax revolt and such things. It only seems a matter of time before hungry people start looting and enemies of order start rampaging.

As always, its a time to draw near to God. Its such a pity that most people wait for something really bad to happen before they quit wasting time and start getting serious with God. Let’s encourage one another on this site to go after God.

          • Vikki:

I noted your comment from a week ago.

I asked Michael (this website host) the same kind of question last month.

I asked “do we have a national prophet and if so who is it”? You can search the answer he gave me.

I think that Graham Cooke is a true prophet, however I am still observing him and his ministry. So far so good. He’s outta of california now. I used to think Perry Stone was but now I am guarded. He’s hangin around WOF flakes. Michael, our website host has some he believes are true prophets that he mentioned in some other comments on this site. However, there are no word of faith prophets, they are all liars. All of them. The 3rd wavers (Chuck Pierce, Rick Joyner, Bob Jones and the KC phony prophets, Cindy Jacobs, C. Peter Wagner…etc) are as flaky and full of bean dip as a $3 bill on a Taco Bell tostida. Forget nut cases like Benny Hinn, Richard “pervert” Roberts and his infamous father and others. Like I said…crap, crap, crap, and more crap.

Wilkerson? He has repented for false prophecies and admits he has spoken out of fear. Is he a prophet? I don’t think so. He at least fesses up when he is wrong.

I don’t know. Where are God’s chosen vessels for this office? How and where is God speaking to us today? Maybe thru your Pastor? In God’s Word too. Plus, you got the HS in you! There ya go.

Most of the so called “prophets” are profit prophets or lying false prophets or as I call them pigs (prophet pigs) in the parlor. You can view them spewing all their lies on http://www.elijahlist.com. There are literally hundreds of false prophecies. It’s crap, crap, crap and more crap. All endorsed and put on the web site by bonehead extraoridinaire, Steve Shultz, who wouldn’t know the Holy Ghost if He walked down the middle of the road at high noon, butt naked, wearin a 10 gallon red hat with a sign post wrapped around his neck. I kid you not. There are more lies on the Elijah List then dead bodies from WW II. It’s enough to make a herd of billy goats puke.

Yep….like I said in the pigs in the parlor comment on Benny Hinn……..we are in the end times and God will do nothing lest He reveal it to His prophets first. You just gotta keep the pulse of God with ya thru the HS so you know who they are when they speak. Trust me. Satan is using hundreds of false prophets today on nation christian TV and thru books and the internet to confuse you. Do not be ignorant of his devices.

Dear Brother in the Lord: I too sleep with my KJV Bible clutched to my chest sometimes. It is so comforting! Ah, the Holy Spirit comforts us in so many ways! I have asked the Lord to give you a special blessing today, and that He would bind up your broken heart–your wife sounds like a precious saint. I too am terrified of getting caught in “the lie” and am hyper-vigilant to watch and study and pray. I would guess this is the heart state of all true believers at this time. Jesus loves you, and He desires for you to be worried and anxious for nothing. Jesus is your best friend. What has helped me to be less anxious–beside asking the Holy Spirit to make that scripture real to my life–is to look at the character of Christ. Like–He isn’t willing for any to perish but all to come to repentance–since He feels that way about the world–just think of how He thinks of you–His beloved child and part of the bride of Christ! Bless you brother and see you soon in the presence of our Lord and King Jesus. The Father is so good to us to give us Jesus and the Holy Spirit!!! Your sister in Corpus Christi, Texas. Melinda

  4. Hi Everyone,
I am new to this site. However, i have read about tge tripatrite nature of Man, from Rebecca Brown,MD books. They give a very sound background of understanding Spiritual Warfare.
If more people understood what really happens in the Spirit world,i believe we would stand a bigger chance of saving more souls for Christ, and also that we may have our brothers and sisters sharing in eternity with those who will be obedient and serve Christ in spirit and truth.

    • gate007 says:

Rebecca brown? Hmm? I think the juries still out on this one Phil. I don’t know I’d credit Rebecca Brown for anything. I went to see her at an unknown church in Virginia and got the strangest grief in my spirit. It was highly unusual. Her husband barked from the pulpit most the night. I was not alone in this discernment. Others walked out because they sensed something was not right. This was back in the late 90’s.

Rebecca Brown MD claims to have been the physician on call when Elaine, the witch, was admitted to the hospital because “satan put cancer on her”. She wrote several books in the 90’s about her relationship with Elaine and thrie discussions, like “He Came to Set the Captives Free” and another book….. I can’t recall the title? Anyways…. I read them all several times. I admit, the stories were quite intriguing especially the testimonies of Elaine who claims she was one of 5 brides of satan. Some of the info is quite gruesome and I found many parts to be Biblical. However, I have noticed over the years that Rebecca Brown doesn’t appear to receive the kind of recognition like a mary baxter or Bill Weise. It doesn’t seem like God is using her in ministry and this concerns me.

Chime in with any input. I actually haven’t heard or read anything on her in years. Maybe I’m wrong about her Phil.

Let’s start a discussion on this topic and maybe others have some input.

      • michael says:

Some people who investigated her ministry were not able to conclude that she was a woman of integrity. But Christians who are of course forbidden to delve into the occult, bought her books by the droves because they purport to give many insider secrets into the dark world of satanism. Juicy stuff.

Who knows how much of it is true?

Huge question marks have been raised also concerning the spiritual status of her husband, and the question of who he was really serving.

By their fruit ye shall know them.

        • JustAGuy says:

It never appeals to me as a good sign when a person has changed their name. Both Rebecca and her husband have different names to their credit. I read “Setting the Captives Free” and it will spin your head around! I believe her writings have nothing worthwhile to tell Christians other than the devil’s kingdom is real (whether her brand of it is or not). Here is a link to a group’s investigation of her. I cannot vouch for their integrity either.

Following is a link to the Brown’s site and their page about who they are.

          Blessings and Peace,

        • Today I first heard about a certain Patricia King.

I saw her video on Youtube.

Can anyone tell me if she is part of the WOF group?

          • I can not vouch for the women but she’s a major player with http://www.elijahlist.com, a group of houdini false prophets who bark at the moon on a continuous basis.

I’d google her name and view both pros and cons on her. View her prophecies and discern how they strike your spirit.

I have not done this myself because I no longer concern myself with anyone brought on the website (Elijah List) of Steve Shultz, King Wizard of the wannabes.

        • Today I first heard about a certain Patricia King.

I saw her video on Youtube.

Can anyone tell me if she is part of the WOF group?

          • michael says:

She was heavily involved in endorsing Todd Bentley and basically seems to be in favor of anything supernatural that purports to be of the Lord. I haven’t the time or inclination to research her in depth. What I have read and seen is indication enough that much of what she puts out is false.

  5. Great article. I’m trying to write a study for small groups on the Spirit, Soul, and Body. I’m collecting data now. If you have anything to share I would appreciated it. I’ve read a book by Andrew Wommack and have read other articles but never seen a good teaching on this subject.

    For Souls,

    • Try Watchman Nee’s classic The Spritual Man for a really deep look at Body Soul and Spirit. Love Andrew Wommack too.

    • JustAGuy says:

Ray, This is a powerful topic. I will share some insights I have on it briefly.

We are created in Gods image.
God is three part in nature: Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
We mirror that being Spirit, Soul and Body.
Nothing new to this discussion in that… however,

      Function of Godhead is this.

The Father is the source of all good things. He is the fountain head. He is patterned in our spirit man. How many times have you ever ‘felt’ something but did not know what it was you were feeling? Suddenly, someone puts it into words and BAM you are energized and motivated!

Jesus Christ is the Word – Logos.

From G3004; something said (including the thought); by implication a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extension a computation; specifically (with the article in John) the Divine Expression (that is, Christ): – account, cause, communication, X concerning, doctrine, fame, X have to do, intent, matter, mouth, preaching, question, reason, + reckon, remove, say (-ing), shew, X speaker, speech, talk, thing, + none of these things move me, tidings, treatise, utterance, word, work.

He is patterned in our soulish man. He takes the thoughts and yearnings of God and speaks them into being. “God said, ‘let there be light, and there was light.”

Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. 7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

The Holy Spirit is the worker. Psa 104:30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth. Our bodies are the counterpart to the Holy Spirit. We have a desire (Father) We develop a plan, put it into words to fulfill (Son) and we roll up our sleeves and do what it takes to accomplish it, (Holy Spirit)

In the creation account we read, “Let US make man in our image”. Man was made into the image of the fullness of God. It did not say ‘let us make man in ‘my’ image, or let us make man in ‘your’ image – referring to only one member of the Godhead. The creation account says we are made in the image of the fullness of the Godhead.

Practical impact of this on me? I grew up in a legalistic church. I saw my relationship with God through an intellectual grid. I was relating with Jesus who said ‘keep my commandments’, which is accurate in the right perspective. I however saw myself primarily as part of a ‘plan’. God had a plan. God loves me because he is working a plan and I am part of the plan. Do you see where this is going? My relationship was a ‘head’ relationship. I related intellectually, but when it came to the Great Command to ‘love the Lord with ALL THY HEART’ I was busted!

I tried harder to do the right things, hoping to God my heart would catch on before it was too late. It didn’t happen until God healed my wife http://perfectinglove.com/ourstory using a church that didn’t keep any of the rules and regulations I grew up using. In healing my wife, I felt God had come down personally to the little hill in the wilderness we lived in and gave us the greatest, most tender gift I could ever thought to ask for, short of salvation.

He did it not because I followed rules and regs. He did it because we dared to believe it was his heart, his will, to heal my wife. He did it while I was yet messed up with a broken, dried up heart. I now went from praising God, because that is what we are “supposed to do,” to praising God and thinking, “so THIS IS WHY men praise Him!!!!” It went from head, to heart when I saw that God loved me in my sin. He saw through my sin and confusion and loved ME. Because he loves ME, He hates my sin. Why? Because the sin within is an active force that hates God and me.

Now, here is a powerful dynamic I learned about healing. Let’s plug this into who we are in Creation. GOD IS LOVE.

You and I are created in the image of God, who is Love. You were created to give and receive love on three dimensions. 1Th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What is the Law of God? To LOVE. We are commanded to walk in who we are in creation so that we will not suffer break down. I have a 4 cylinder car. It gets great gas mileage. I use it to go to window cleaning accounts. I have a bucket in the back and I’m off. Now, if I get into landscaping and have to pull a trailer with mowers and blowers and stuff, and I exceed the manufacturer’s tow limits, what will happen? It will break down.

You and I are created to love. “my yoke is easy, my burden is light.” “His commandments are not greivous to be born.” But, “sin is the transgression of the Law” 1 Jn 3:4.

When we walk in sin, we are exceeding the manufacturer’s specifications and we break down mentally, and that often manifests physically in diseases such as my wife had of environmental illness. Other diseases of autoimmune disorders often stem from self hatred. The spirit of man is saying, “I don’t deserve to live.” Or, “I wish I were dead.” The body now seeks out a way to work out that solution of death. It puts out a hit list on the body to destroy it. This is my understanding of it.

If you look at any psychological disorder, it is rooted in a thought process that violates God’s Word. Fear is a primary root of psychiatric disease. Take those fearful thoughts and surrender them to God.

How many people are treated for loving too much, or over exerting themselves in peace? or joy?

This is why we MUST renew our minds, and put on the mind of Christ in all things taking our thoughts captive. When we do that, we will find a host of diseases disappearing. Remove the root of sin in our hearts and minds, and the fruit of sin in our minds and bodies will fall off.

Repentance and Forgiveness are the agents Christ gave us to overcome the power of sin and hell once and for all. They are the keys to being changed. So much can be said here…

      Bessings and Peace,

  6. I absolutely love this article. I am a Christian that is interested in alternative therapies and quantum physics specifically applied to the field of medicine. If you have written other article similar to this or know where I can find them, I would greatly appreciate you sending me their way. Many folks in the New Age movement need to read the Bible and articles like this that could help them see the all important link of Spirit, Soul and Body is not something new in their movement but has been in the Bible for 2000 years! Thanks so much for writing it!

  7. A while back, I put a link to this on the website God has been helping me build where I address many of these same issues. It is amazing how many believers do not understand how God designed them. I will be praying for you Michael as God leads you into more teaching like this that is so crucial to the building up of the Body of Christ.

I work for a missions org in South Africa. We take teams of people from all over and they come do volunteer work in our local community for anywhere from 2 – 4 weeks. We also offer longer courses for people that want to do 6 months to 2 years – but that is more of a gap year programme.
