Speaking in tongues

What does the bible say about speaking in tongues? It seems to me that everyone that I have spoken to regarding this subject have a dierent opinion. Some people believe that every christian should be able to speak in tongues while others argue that speaking in tongues is a gift from God. If I can’t speak in tongues does that mean I am not right with God? I have been to a few churches where people prayed for me so that I could speak in tongues but it didn’t work. Personally, I don’t believe that speaking in tongues is something we can pray for , I think it is a spiritual gift. Speaking in tongues shouldn’t be something used to determine our faith in God but something unique to an individual.

What do YOU think?

I believe in speaking in tongues with all my heart. But yet I never have, I would love too. I have prayed about it and asked to be gifted with the gift. However, I have not
recieved that gift as of yet.
It doesn’t make me any less of a Christian nor does it you. God knows what we need and when we need it. I do not think any man should try force or make the Holy Spirit manifest itself in any particular way. However, I do believe in the laying on of hands and praying for someone. But I do not know about grabbing someone by the head and trying to force it upon them. God is in control and He knows what is best and when. I do not know as much as I should about the gifts but I know a little.
Don’t fret or get anxious, God only wants the best for you.
The Gifts of the HolySpirit are:
    1.The Word of Knowledge
    2.The Word of Wisdom
    3.The Gift of Prophecy
    4.The Gift of Faith
    5.The Gifts of Healings
    6.The Working of Miracles
    7.The Discerning of Spirits
    8.Different Kinds of Tongues
    9.The Interpretation of Tongues

    1. “Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy.” (1 Corinthians 14:39)

    2. “… and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.” (1 Corinthians 14:1)

    3. “Do not quench the Spirit, do not despise prophecies.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19)

    4. “Do not neglect the gift that is in you … Meditate on these things, give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.” (1 Timothy 4:14)

    5. “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” (2 Timothy 1:6)

  2. The Apostle Paul writes, “He who speaks in tongues edifies himself…I would like every one of you to speak in tongues” (1 Corinthians 14:4,5)
    but it is also said:-
‘Do all speak in tongues?’ (1 Corinthians 12:30)

Which means not everyone has the same gifts or why ask the question… DO ALL.

Do not worry if you can speak in Tongue’s or not as you will have other gifts.

I remember when i was prayed over by 3 old women in Church and one of them began speaking in Tongues and another started crying and another praising God, it was awesome. I left Church with my little head in a bubble and unknowingly started to walk the wrong way home, when i looked up from my bubble i thought where am i? I need to turn around and go back, as i turned around i started to speak in tongues and i was so shocked that i decided to carry on walking the ‘wrong’ way. When i got to the bottom of the street i saw an old buddy that i had not seen for about 3 years and he gave me a lift home in his car. So even though i had walked the wrong way i got home quicker. God is so awesome. The reason i am sharing this with you is to show you anyone that is blessed by God can pray over you and give you the gift of the Holy Spirit, it doesn’t have to be a minister, they just have to have the Glory of God in them and you will receive gifts.

    • I don’t know if I have any natural gifts in me, I am still yet to explore and ask God to reveal the gifts that He may have instilled in me which I am not aware of. I would really love to have the gift of laying hands on people and healing them and Wisdom.
Thank you for sharing with me your story.
      God bless

Yeukai – I am seeking the real baptism of the Holy Ghost like the apostles received on Pentecost, and the initial evidence of His entry is speaking in tongues. I want the real thing, not speaking in tongues at will as so many do; that’s not of God at all. Jesus said to seek, and you shall find; so, I know He will send the Holy Ghost to me when it’s my time. I praise Him with all my heart in faith as I seek for Him. I use the word “Glory, Glory, Glory” to praise Him. I am sure many want to bypass the seeking part, so they just start speaking in tongues at will. We all need the Holy Ghost to be an overcomer.

    • Hi, Thank you for your comment. I pray that God will fill you with the Holy spirit as you continue to seek him diligently.

      God bless you!

  4. Hi Huck, Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post, your comment really helped. I would love to speak in tongues but I didn’t we could ask God for it just thought only some people could speak. I have not explored much on the subject but I have read a few verses that talk about speaking in tongues and I never came across any verse that says we must all speak in tongues when we receive the holy spirit. I thought I would post it up on here and see what other people think about it.

Acts 2, talks about how the believers were filled with the holy spirit and began to speak in tongues. But as you continue reading, you will notice that they were speaking in languages that the unbelievers could understand so that they could hear the good news about the gospel. However, nowadays people just speak in tongues without an interpreter, I have never seen anyone interpret what someone had said in tongues, all I hear is people yelling on top of their voices in another language and no-one has a clue of what they are saying. 1 Corinthians 14 says that if there is no-one in the church who can explain what is being said then those speaking in tongues must be quiet and only speak to self and to God. verse 5 says I would like you all to speak in tongues but I would rather you had you had the gift of proclaiming God’s message and this goes to show that speaking in tongues isn’t that important otherwise He would have just said everyone who is been baptised in the holy spirit should speak in tongues.

This has been an issue for me since a pastor prayed for me so that I could receive this gift, He kept shaking my heard and wouldn’t let go to the point where my neck started hurting and I had to fake it for him to let go and he was very pleased with himself. I didn’t like doing that but that was the only way he was going to stop, and I was not right with God then, a friend had invited me to church. And now that I have come to know God, when the Pastor calls those who can’t speak in tongues to the front I just stay in my seat. I have recently started going to a Baptist Church and they don’t call people to the front so they can pray for them to speak in tongues. I love pentecoastal churches but don’t agree that speaking in tongues determines your faith in God among other things.

  5. 1st Corinthians Chapter 12:29,30

    Are all apostles?
    Are all prophets?
    Are all teachers?
    Are all workers of miracles?
Do all have gifts of healings?
    Do all speak in tongues?
    Do all interpret?

If any one tells you that you MUST speak in tongues in order to display your Faith in the Lord pull that list out… Obviously the answer is “No”.

I was saved in a Pentecostal/Charismatic Church which was really heavy into Experiential though very light on Doctrine. They insisted that you had to have a tongue. Funny thing about that church was that nobody interpreted.

Yes I do have the gift of speaking in tongues (some call it a prayer language). But I did go through a time when I tried to deny it and talk myself out of it… (your making it up). I think the turning point for me though came when I felt the Lord’s Spirit was strongly impressing me to Speak out in my Spiritual Language in front of a Pastor who didn’t really believe in this sort of thing. (We were involved a bit of a Spiritual Battle – I had to tell him to go back a few steps due to his lack of experience… It was one of “those Demonic-types”) Later the Pastor commented that when he heard me speaking in tongues he felt very comforted and thought I was Praising the Lord in Hebrew or some Middle East Language. (to me it sounds like Sanskrit – I don’t have the Gift of interpretation).

Thought not knowing enough about your circumstances I wouldn’t care to comment much further but have you explored the issue any deeper? Is it something you may wish to investigate and asking the Lord for the Gift? (seek all the best gifts)

I heard a woman once call into a Christian “Q” and “A” radio talk show who confessed that she was new in Christ and was hearing a strange Language speaking inside her. She didn’t even know enough about the Gifts of the Spirit… Didn’t know about tongues! She remarked that it didn’t scare her and that she actually felt very peaceful, just didn’t know what was going on.

The hosts led her through the doctrine and all were laughing about it! It was really fun to hear because it just showed how the Holy Spirit works so uniquely different in the believers lives.

But read 1st Corinthians Chapters 12, 13 and 14 and remember the Greatest Gift is Love (all the others pass away when were called to heaven).

    Hope this helps
