Hostility from Jesus?

I am in doubt about how Luke 12:52-53 (see belove) which deals with family relation should be interpreted. What I search is the reason why Jesus said this. If there had been a reason mentioned like: this will happen because you break the first commandment, I would understand it,
but there is none. Why did Jesus not give an explination or at least an instruction about how to relate to his words about this specific issue (actually he may have done and something may have been lost)?
It looks like he does not want us to live in peace with our family members, why should not the Prince of Peace want us to live in peace with our familymembers? I do not know how to interpret these bible verses. I am thankfull for all answers.

49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

What do YOU think?

    Hi Rosemin

    Your question regarding Luke 12:51-53

    Luk 12:51,53
    51) Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
    52) For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
    53) The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

This is the same account but from Matthew, notice he gives reasons for this division in verses (36,37).
Some of the same household will accept Jesus and those that dont will persecute those who have.
But Jesus is saying that there has to be a choice made, HE has to be the first priority in your life.

    Mat 10:34-37
    34) Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
    35) For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
    36) And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.
    37) He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Now take into account, when Jesus spoke, He was speaking to Jews, who would be accepting their Messiah, that would be an affront to the family.
Even today, when a Jew accepts Jesus, there are family’s that say prayers for the dead, because they count that person as dead to the family from that point on, (excommunicated).
Hope this helps, Jesus was not advocating that you should, or had to hate your family, the anger will come from them, just love them.

    Be Blessed

      Hi Jim
Thank you for responding. I knew about Mat10:37 but I did not see the link, now I do. I did not now about the Jews practices, thank you for sharing this knowledge with me.
      God bless you.
