What is a Christian? What does the Bible say?

What is a Christian? Of course, words can mean whatever groups of people speaking a common dialect understand by them. The word “Christian” in popular usage has come to mean someone who has at least a loose affiliation with some kind of church, or who says that they are a Christian. Someone who pays some degree of lip service to Jesus Christ, at least in name only. If there is something more to really being a Christian, what is it?

In the end, what matters is what God says about a subject. The term “Christian” was first used by people at Antioch where so many people had begun to adhere to the teachings of the apostles and teachers like Barnabas and Saul (Paul). The Bible definition of a Christian is a DISCIPLE of Jesus Christ. A disciple is one who is learning and learning to obey the Master.

So according to the Bible, the only true Christians are those that are disciples of Jesus. To be a disciple of Jesus, you must have a genuine spiritual connection with Jesus, and you need to be able to learn from Jesus with a view to doing what Jesus says. If you don’t want to live for Jesus, or listen to Jesus, or follow Jesus, you are not a disciple of Jesus. You may be a “Christian”, but you are not the kind of Christian God will recognise on the Day of Judgement as belonging to Jesus. You can learn from Jesus through listening to and obeying the Word of God as the Holy Spirit illuminates you. Begin by crying out to God for mercy, forgiveness and cleansing. That is the best way.

What is the point of being the kind of “Christian” that the world recognises as such, but GOD does not? What’s the point of being religious and dying in your sins? Hell will no doubt be full of these kinds of Christians, because God has only promised cleansing and adoption to those who are “Born Again” of the Word and the Spirit, who become disciples, who present themselves to the Lord for instruction and teaching. If Jesus is not LORD of your life, in reality, then you need to question whether you have really been saved from your sins. Question whether you do in fact belong to Him.

Why not take some steps today in being a disciple of Jesus? There are prayers you can pray and things you can say. But most important of all is the commitment you make in your own heart and life to actually BE a disciple of Jesus.

“The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.”
