The Silent Stones of Evolution

The Silent Stones of Evolution

Wisdom's Friend

A  stone simply exists and must follow natural laws; it has no choice. Man is a living being. While he too must follow some natural laws, he has something a stone does not: life and free will. This gives him choice. In fact, life demands that choices be made, choices of which the stone knows nothing. Hence, for man, guidance in making the choices which he must make becomes absolutely essential.

There are two main avenues open to man for guidance in making the choices which he must make concerning his existence and how he is to live: self and reason, and God and his Word. He can be guided by one or the other or by both, since there is not necessarily a conflict between the two when man and his reason are in subjection to God. When God created the first man, there was initially no conflict since Adam submitted to God of his own free will. This freedom he enjoyed included allowance for use of man’s own reasoning and thinking abilities.

“Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name” (Gen. 2:19 NIV).

Thus the first man used his own reasoning abilities to contribute to God’s created world. This is how God meant for it to be. Man was created with certain abilities that only a being with life has, in order to share in the joy of being alive: the ability to comprehend and think and know, even to reason with God.

“Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord” (Is. 1:18 NIV).

But notice that this statement from Scripture says that we are to reason together with God. After the fall into sin in the Garden of Eden, after eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the pursuit of knowledge of all kinds on his own became man’s premiere sin. He no longer sought to reason together with God but apart from him. This led to disaster–and still does, for man on his own is not capable of figuring out all he needs to know to preserve his own life.

“The Lord knows the thoughts of man; he knows that they are futile” (Ps. 94:11 NIV).

“Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all men! What man can live and not see death, or save himself from the power of the grave?” (Ps. 89:47 NIV).

“No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him–the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough–that he should live on forever and not see decay.

“For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others. Their tombs will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves.

“But man, despite his riches, does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish. This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings” (Ps. 49:7-13 NIV).

Without a doubt, one of the most wide-spread belief systems in the world is evolution. Many follow this worldview and approve of its teachings. Its adherents trust in themselves, in the reasonings of their own minds, believing that the physical, material world is all there is and that all life somehow sprang from this totality unaided, following the laws of the natural realm. But Scripture has this to say about those who trust in their own minds:

“He who trusts in his own mind is a fool” (Prov. 28:26 RSV).

To trust in naturalistic processes of a totally materialistic universe is hold the creation above the Creator (Rom. 1:25). It is to look to inanimate, lifeless things as the source of life. It is to seek guidance for life in things that are as dead as stones. Therefore Scripture asks a pertinent question:

“Should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?” (Is. 8:19 NIV).

Though this was asked in a context of spiritism, the question remains just as relevant for those who seek the answer to the question of life in the dead stones or building blocks of the physical universe which evolution venerates. Why consult the physical universe, which cannot and did not produce life in and of itself, for guidance regarding the purpose and conduct of the life you now possess? Why consult dead things on behalf of the living? Should you not rather inquire of God, who created all life?

But those who follow and approve of the teachings of evolution pay no heed to this sage advice from Scripture. Instead, they continue to seek the answers on their own, in a realm of inert, lifeless stones. And what do they hear when they inquire? Silence.

“They shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made” (1 Kgs. 18:26 NIV).

On the altar of evolution, there is only silence, for it is an idol, a false god with no life in it. It cannot respond or give guidance. Therefore, those who abandon God and seek the answer in such idols fall under God’s just condemnation.

“Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’ Can it give guidance? It is covered with gold and silver; there is no breath in it” (Hab. 2:19 NIV).v

Evolution has no answer to the mystery of the existence of life and its meaning. When its adherents cry out for answers and meaning, then, all they hear is silence. Therefore they shout all the louder and dance around the truth of God revealed in his Word by dancing around the altar of evolution which they made by their own hands.

It is far different, however, for those who seek guidance in God and his Word. They have his assurances that he will give them the truth and the guidance they seek.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jer. 33:3 NIV).

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you” (Ps. 32:8 NIV).

This is the guidance that man needs, guidance that is completely trustworthy–so much so, that we can rest the very fate of our souls for all eternity upon it.

“You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory” (Ps. 73:24 NIV).

Thus the stones of evolution are silent because those who look to them for guidance in understanding life, via science or human reasoning, cannot hear what they are saying. They cannot hear what they are saying because they do not have the love of God in their hearts.

“Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say” (Jn. 8:43 NIV)

“You refuse to come to me to have life . . . but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts” (Jn. 5:40, 43 NIV).

God has provided himself a witness in the natural realm. All who seek him and his truth see that witness and hear it speak to them this truth.

“There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world” (Ps. 19:3-4 RSV).

“If these were silent, the very stones would cry out” (Lk. 19:40 RSV).

They do cry out (Rom. 1:20). It’s just that not everyone hears them (Jer. 6:10).

He   who has ears to hear, let him hear” (Mk. 4:9 NIV) (Rev. 13:9).
