Overcoming Hatred, Rejection and Abuse

This testimony is taken from the book "Jars of Clay" Copyright (C) 1999 by Rev. Claudio Freidzon. It is used republished on this website with special permission.

Until my father's death, I had a very happy childhood. His presence always filled me with a sense of safety and love - unlike my mother's presence. My mother rejected me for no apparent reason. Even though I was very young, she continually spanked me. My father always had to intervene to defend me. I remember times when he would come home from work and, finding me crying in my room in complete darkness, would argue with my mother for the way she treated me.

In spite of this, I was happy. Dad loved me and was very sweet with me. He always had an excuse for my mom's behavior, and taught me to love her in spite of it all. He was so concerned for the family unity that in the end when he was very sick and near death, he asked me never to leave my mother or my sister. Poor Dad! Without knowing it, he laid a heavy burden on my shoulders that would ruin my life forever.

When we got home on the very same day we buried him, after saying good-bye to my grandmother, my mother started to hit me again and again, while saying, "Cry, cry, let's see if he hears you now and comes to your rescue!" I didn't cry, and I swore to myself that nobody would ever see me crying again.

She forced me to work as a maid in other people's homes. I worked hard, fearing that if I made any mistakes they would tell her, and then I would be punished. If they gave me any clothes or candy, I had to give it to my younger sister. "Poor little thing," my mom used to say of my sister, "she is growing up without her daddy." She didn't realize that I was still a child at nine years old.

My teenage years were torture. I was raped by relatives and endured that humiliation under threat, afraid my mother would beat me and throw me out of the house if she found out. When my mom came home every night after work, I was gripped by fear. Only a few know how much a child tormented by fear suffers. I do.

When I turned eighteen, I used part of my salary to buy myself a beautiful gold ring instead of giving the money to my mother, and I was kicked out of the house. I left with what I was wearing and the gold ring in my hand. I tried to forget my mother, but what I had promised my father weighed me down. Every month, I sent her half of my salary. I actually believe that I could not stop loving her.

As the years went by, I became a union activist, got married and divorced and became involved in politics somewhat successfully. No one ever saw me crying, not even my children. I was known as a tough woman, totally devoted to my work. But an accident left me crippled, forcing me to use a cane. I had lost 75 percent of my physical ability, which allowed me to obtain an early retirement. From that point on, my time was solely devoted to my children, and I tried to lead a quieter life.

Soon after, something incredible happened that brought a light of hope to my heart. I received a letter from my sister in Mar del Plata. She lived there in a small apartment with my mother. Several times in the past I had helped them buy furniture or a TV set, but this letter was different. She told me that they were very lonely, had no friends and wanted to move to Buenos Aires so they could live with me. Their idea was to sell their apartment and, with me adding some extra money, buy a house where we could all fit. I liked the idea. Could we finally have a home? My children and some friends advised me not to do it, but I was sure they had changed. And besides, the promise made to my father gave me no freedom to reject the offer.

I brought them home with me. I soon discovered that they were involved in an Afro-Brazilian religion. They brought a person to my house to do "spiritual works" and immediately started to take over my whole house. I didn't want to argue. They will change, I thought. Once we move to the new house everything will be different.

Two years later, the Mar del Plata apartment sold. My sister took part of that money to pay a fortuneteller who, according to my sister, had helped her to sell the apartment. I was furious, but since my mother supported everything my sister did, I added the necessary money to buy the new house. I even borrowed money so that I could fix it, since it was in serious need of repair. At that point, I had changed my mind, but I couldn't go back.

When we had almost finished painting the house and were ready to move, the unexpected happened. As we ate dinner one night, my mother and sister told me that they were moving without me. They said they had always wanted to live by themselves, and if I had any problems with their decision I could sue them. I couldn't believe my ears. I felt so betrayed. They knew they didn't have enough money to buy the house so they had tricked me into helping them to do it.

I told them, "You have forty-eight hours to leave my house. If I come back and find you here, I swear I will kill you both." The pain I felt was so intense, I couldn't even think. I asked my son to help them move. I came back home as my mother was packing her last things - including some of my clothes. Looking into her eyes, I said, "Look at me. When you die and need me to close your eyes, you will die with your eyes open. You will never hurt me again." Then I turned around and left.

The following months were horrible. I fell into a deep depression. I had spent sixty years trying to get my mother to love me, and I felt defeated.  I felt sick just at the thought that they lived twoblocks away. Not even the desire for revenge would help my depression.

I had a Christian friend who prayed continually for me. One day, she invited me to an evangelistic meeting led by Pastor Claudio Freidzon in the Sarmiento Park. The first day, I didn't understand what it was all about, but I listened to the Word of God. When Pastor Claudio prayed for me, I was filled with peace, and I was able to sleep that night. On the next Sunday, my friend convinced me to go back. Once again the pastor prayed for me, saying, "Receive what God has for you." I immediately felt a need to leave that auditorium. I suddenly started to cry and cry. I couldn't stop. I didn't even care what others thought of me. I was crying like never before in my life.

A young assistant came and asked me what was going on. "I'm sorry," I said, "I don't know what's going on. I just can't stop crying."

"Don't worry," he said, "you are crying for all those things you were never able to cry for before." I was astounded. How did he know? He continued by saying, "But finally your time has come. The Lord has called you; you have answered; and you will stay forever with Him because He is blessing you." Then he asked to be excused and left. I never saw him again, but his words left a strange peace in my heart. It was as if all the bad things had been erased from my mind and my heart.

I started attending King of Kings Church. A discipleship counselor received me very sweetly. I felt better every day. At home, I would listen to worship music while I cleaned my house, singing and worshiping God. Things didn't look as bad anymore. Soon after, without anyone telling me to, I signed up for a baptism course and got baptized. God was dealing with me.

One Sunday during the main service, the Word of God touched me, and I walked up front in answer to that calling. While the pastor prayed, I felt like I was all alone in the midst of that crowd that was pressing on me from all sides. Just me and God by that altar. Suddenly, during the prayer, I felt lifted up in the air as if hanging from my hands in chains. I heard the pastor's voice saying: "Let go of her, Satan!" I could see my chains breaking. I thought I was in another world, surrounded by a cloud of glory. When I opened my eyes, I was surprised to see so many people around me. God had dealt with me in a very intimate way. I felt restored inside. I was an entirely different person.

Free from hatred and resentment, I started to pray blessings over my mother and my sister. Soon after, I went back to work. My coworkers were surprised to see me, and I would tell them over and over again: "He has told me to come back." When I said "He," meaning the Lord, they thought I meant the company's president.

I live a new life. My inner peace is so great that no one will ever be able to take it away from me.

A Personal Challenge For You

The people of the world can be divided into two groups. The first group are those who can clearly point to the intervention of Jesus Christ in their lives. The second are those who cannot. If you are in this latter group PLEASE don't let another hour go past before you get right with God. He loves you and has a great plan for your life! But there must be change. If you are religious but can't point to a definite work of God in your life YOU NEED to get born again in the Bible way. To find out how to get right with God, click here now.

If however, you are in the first group and you have a testimony of Christ's working in your life, God wants you to share it. Read HERE about the power of your testimony. You can overcome Satan by the Word of your testimony, and help others to find faith in Christ.
