Issues about Money and Giving

Like most churches, we are going to receive offerings. People are going to be invited to contribute financially to the development of the online community. Why is this?

1. As a group of people called out to worship and serve Christ, we must give a practical expression to our commitment. Money is a means of exchange that people use to get things done. As pastors we have a job to do. This involves caring for people, spending time, and laying down our lives for others as well as our own families. Families need food and shelter.

2. The Bible says: "Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches. " (Galatians 6:6). Those who work hard at getting good spiritual food for others should be financially helped by those who are benefiting.

1Co 9:7  Who ever goes to war without looking to someone to be responsible for his payment? who puts in vines and does not take the fruit of them? or who takes care of sheep without drinking of their milk?

1Co 9:8  Am I talking as a man? does not the law say the same?
1Co 9:9  For it says in the law of Moses, It is not right to keep the ox from taking the grain when he is crushing it. Is it for the oxen that God is giving orders?
1Co 9:10  Or has he us in mind? Yes, it was said for us; because it is right for the ploughman to do his ploughing in hope, and for him who is crushing the grain to do his work hoping for a part in the fruits of it.
1Co 9:11  If we have been planting the things of the Spirit for you, does it seem a great thing for you to give us a part in your things of this world?

We want to be generous with those who teach the Word of God.

3. We have to consider that God wants us to help widows and orphans, and the poor. He also wants us to help persecuted brethren around the world. Without financial resources, we cannot do this. So we have to gather them so we can do something for these people as a church together.

People we have known for a while may be helped financially by the church. If someone who is a member/partner of the Christian Faith online church recommends you be helped financially, we will strongly consider it. This will be possible as we get to know people – offline as well as online.

4. We want to be able to support missions work, both online and offline.

Again, without money, its very difficult to sustain missions work. We don't need to waste money on extravagant things, but we can use it intelligently as the Spirit directs to make a real difference in the lives of others.

There is an unprecedented opportunity for reaching the world through the internet, and we need to invest time and money into it. More on this later.

5. This helps sort out people who are committed to this vision from people who are not.

We welcome visitors but if any church becomes your primary source of fellowship and teaching, you need to be investing financially into that church. Anyone can listen in, but if you are REALLY COMMITTED and want others to be committed to you, you show it by your giving.

6. God promises blessings to those who give

Its well-worn, but it is the truth. The Bible says, "Give, …" and what? "it shall be given unto you" (Luke 6:38). The measure we use is the measure we receive in. Following on from Galatians 6:6, Galatians 6:7 says that a man will reap what he sows. If you spend money only on yourself and your desires, without investing in God's work, you are sowing according to the flesh. Part of sowing to the Spirit involves giving to God's work.

The Book of Proverbs teaches that the generous man will be blessed, and he who waters will himself be watered. There are many other Scriptures which teach the same truth. Try it out and see!

We don't make any apologies for receiving offerings. If you are not led to give, that's fine, but I suggest you should then question whether you are really being led by the Holy Spirit to be part of this online church. If you are not led to be part of it, you are welcome to come along, but you can't expect the same level of commitment to you as to someone who chooses to be part of the online church family.
