Eternal Hell

How Could A God of Love Send People to Hell?

“The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God.”

Psalm 9:17

There are few thoughts more unpleasant than the thought of a human soul burning in endless fires of torment and anguish. Could it possibly be that multitudes of deceased souls are even now in that horrible condition? Imagine for a moment being eternally lost – without hope of rescue, with no opportunity for another chance. All your past sins are before your mind, leaving your poor soul tormented with guilt. Add to that the righteous wrath of Almighty God – the hot displeasure of the Lord of the Universe whose Word you despised in your lifetime now taking vengeance on your soul! Weeping, gnashing of teeth, gnawing worms, darkness, regret, utter despair. The thought is so unpleasant we are reluctant to consider it. The mind rebels against such a thing.

But could it be true?

It seems to match the description given in the Bible.
How horrible.

A God of Love?

If it is true that this is going on, how could we possible consider the God who sends people to hell a God of love? Oh, I know that some say, “God doesn’t send anyone to hell, people send themselves”. It sounds good, but it doesn’t match the words of the Bible. Jesus Christ told us that one day He is going to say to some, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels!” (Matthew 25:41). It doesn’t sound like these people sent themselves to hell. No sir. No one would willingly choose that destination. Even demons, evil spirits, were afraid of being sent there (see Luke 8:31).

How could a God of love send people to hell?

The Bible certainly claims that God is a God of love. It says in John 3:16,

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life!”

In 1 John 4:8 it says, “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love”.

If love desires the best for the beloved, how could God end up casting any person, no matter HOW bad, into everlasting fire and torment, with no chance of a reprieve?

The answers are there if you dig in the Bible. The subject is unpleasant and shocking. This subject will be offensive to MANY. You yourself might take offence at God, and His Word. However, I believe it is better for us to be shocked NOW, than shocked THEN, after we leave this mortal frame and enter into eternity. May God help us all to be prepared for what lies beyond the veil of death.
