Effective Prayer Keys part 2 – from Paul Quadros’ book on Personal Revival

These chapters from Paul Quadros’ book of Personal Revival – “Catch the Glorious Fire” will be a blessing to you if you put them into practice.

PRAYER AND PRAISE

(See also praise and thanksgiving)

The Bible tells us that God dwells in the praises of his people. And collective praise releases the spiritual atmosphere, which makes it easy for us to penetrate into the spiritual realm, and make big prayers to God, according to His will. And when we pray according to His will He hears us (1 John 5:14).

Music also prepares our heart for God. God loves music. The Bible tells us, “Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord” (Eph 5:19) Music helps us in our worship, hence helps us to enter His presence easily. Spiritual music is also a weapon against the enemy.

PRAYER AND THE WORD

The more we meditate on His Word, the more we are strengthened in our inner man. And in turn, this helps us to pray better. Lack of the Word in our hearts can make our prayers dry; since we lack faith or substance in our prayers. Faith is built by the revelation of the Word of God in our hearts.

The Word also prepares our hearts for prayer. It softens our hearts, produces faith, cleanses our minds, and helps us to know His will.

The Word also helps us to overcome sin. As the psalmist said, “I have hidden your Word in my heart so that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119:11). Also in Psalm 119:133 his prayer was, “Lord directs my footsteps according to your Word; let no sin have control over me.”

Using the Word of God is another powerful way to break into the spirit realm. Since we know the Word of God was written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, we must learn to use it in our prayers. In fact all our prayers should be based on God’s Word, because the Word of God is the will of God. When we touch the Word, we touch the Spirit of God. Hence our prayers rise up by faith which is the key element required in all our prayers. “If you abide in me, and My Words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” (John 15:7) NKJV

 PRAYING WITH WORSHIP

Praying with worship is another way of powerful prayer. When we worship God, we draw near to God. We begin to understand the heart of God, the feelings of God, and the burdens and concerns He has for His Kingdom, His people and the world at large. Hence it is easy for us to pray powerfully with worship, and also after worship. In worship, God is enthroned and exalted. We adore Him and submit to Him. Hence it becomes easy to plead with Him. Often, authority is released on our lives during worship, and this authority helps us in warfare and intercession. All Glory to God for His Grace that enables us to intercede.

PRAYING WITH AGREEMENT

When our hearts are in agreement, the Spirit of God is in our midst. Agreement also comes as a result of our love for each other. As we love one another we abide in God, and God abides in us. (1 John 4:12)

Jesus said “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them, by My Father in heaven” (Matt 18:19) NKJV

As we become sensitive to the Holy Spirit we can easily pick up the signals in the spiritual realm. When we meet and fellowship with people of God, we increase in our Love and unity this will help us to pray with agreement. As a result, great things can happen, and the whole atmosphere can be filled with the presence of God. When His presence falls, all the gifts of the Spirit start operating, and the whole direction will change.

Prayer helps us to know the will of God. And once we are filled with the knowledge of the will of God, we are enabled to make the right decisions. (Colossians 1:10)

PRAYING WITH FAITH

We already know faith is required in all our prayers, but some times we give up before faith is produced in our hearts. Sometimes we spontaneously pray by faith led by the Spirit, but there are times when we need to pray till faith is increased from little faith to great faith produced (revelation).

The Bible says, “When you pray, believe.” (Mark 11:24) Hence in many cases, we must persevere till we believe. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Hence, while we are praying we begin to hear God, and when God speaks, faith is produced and then we can move mountains. (Mark 11:23-24). Without this kind of faith in our hearts, we are unable to move the mountains.

One of the most powerful Scripture in the Bible is “All things are possible to him who believes” Mark 9:23. This kind of faith needs two things i.e. Word from His mouth (Jesus spoke to the father whose son was possessed), and our heart-felt cry in response (father cried with tears and said “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!’’) Mark 9:24. NKJV

And in verse 29 Jesus explained, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting” that means our heart-felt sacrificial persistent prayers of faith( in response to His rhema Word i.e. His will with whom all things are possible) can make all things possible for us on this earth.

Remember Jesus prayed “Father, if it is your will, take this cup away from me.”(Luke 22:42)

One more very important thing in our prayer of faith is our confession, once faith has come in our hearts, we must speak that faith out; only then mountains will move (Mark 11:22-23). The confession of our faith will come in three parts: thoughts, words, and actions; all confirming and affirming what God has spoken.

So Jesus answered and said to them “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, Be removed and be cast into the sea and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them and you will have them”. (Mark 11: 22-23) NKJV

PRAYER AND FORGIVENESS

Forgiveness is the key to have faith and a right relationship with God. Unforgiveness will prevent us from standing right with God. When our hearts are not right with God, sin keeps us from hearing Him. In no time our level of faith plummets (goes down), and we stop moving ahead. So when we stand praying and if we have anything against our brother, we must forgive him (Mark11: 25). Remember as we forgive others, we will be forgiven. (Math 6:12)

For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your father will not forgive your sins” (Math 6:14, 15) NIV

Some times it is not easy to forgive, but if we persist and keep calling on to God for His mercy, His Holy Spirit will come upon us and convict us, and He will give us the grace to forgive. “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16) NIV

One of the best ways to overcome our hurts and pains, and bitterness against people is to pray for them. As you begin to pray for them, and stand in the gap for them, you start repenting for their faults and sins and you will rise to the place where you can ask God to forgive them. That means God’s heart becomes your heart, and He will listen to you.

We must keep interceding for people who have hurt us till we have developed a Christ-like love in our hearts for them. The enemy is completely defeated when we do that by His grace.

PRAYING AND FASTING

The Spirit of God led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil; and Jesus fasted. (Matthew 4:1). Initially when we are filled with the Spirit—which occurs usually after baptism (Matthew 3:16)—we are led by the Spirit to fast more. During this time, God leads us to pray more sacrificially until we have learnt to overcome the flesh and to walk in the Spirit. Some examples in the Bible that can help us understand fasting more are: Daniel, Esther, Nehemiah and Jehoshaphat.

It is very good for us to follow the leading of the Spirit in fasting. It will not only make our prayers powerful but will also change us, and make us Christ-like in our character.

Fasting is one of the most powerful weapons in our prayers. We become sensitive to the Holy Spirit while fasting, and we learn to give priority to God more than anything else. By fasting, we also sharpen our faith in God.

PRAYING IN TONGUES

All those who believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit know very well how powerful it is to pray in tongues. Praying in tongues can be done in two ways. The first way is to choose to pray in tongues as often as you can—anytime, anywhere, at any place. The Holy Spirit is always ready to enable us to pray if we depend on Him. We must cultivate a habit of praying always in this way.

Secondly, we are spontaneously led to pray in tongues at anytime and anywhere. It is very important for us to be governed by the Holy Spirit because the Spirit of God knowing our situations, difficulties, problems and oppositions helps us to pray accordingly. We must continue to pray in this manner until the burden in our hearts is lifted, and it becomes clear in our minds what we need to do.

The Bible tells us to pray in the Spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers, making intercession for saints. (Ephesians 6:18).

Some people think that all things will work together for good all the time but the Scripture has few conditions i.e. all of us who are called according to His purpose must love God and pray in the Spirit according to His will (which results us in walking in the Spirit). Then God by His mercy will orchestrate circumstances around us for our good and for His Glory. Then we can boldly say all things will work together for good (Rom 8: 26-28)

Our complete obedience to His will comes by praying and obeying the promptings of the Spirit, and by this we can by His Grace avoid every unwanted circumstance which is not for His Glory.

APOSTOLIC PRAYERS

When we read the letters of the Apostle Paul we realize how often he prayed for the church, and how passionate his prayers were. Noted below are few examples:-

(1) I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers (Eph 1:16)

(2) I thank my God every time I remember you, in all my prayers for all of you. I always pray with joy (Phil 1:3, 4)

(3) I thank my God…at night and day, I constantly remember you in my prayers. (2 Tim 1:3).

(4) With this in mind we constantly pray for you (2 Thess 1:11).

(5) I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers (Philemon 1:4).

 WHAT DID HE PRAY?

What the Holy Spirit led Apostle Paul to pray is the key for us to know the mind of Christ in our prayers. I believe we must pray all the time, continuously led by the Holy Spirit according to the will of God. The Lord will often burden you with prayers for yourself, your family, your leadership, and your local church, and then you can rise up to pray for the city, nation, and nations etc. It may sometime start first for ourselves, our family, and church. And then gradually as we get matured in the Lord, He leads us to further pray for the city, nation etc.

Let us briefly look at some few important points that Apostle Paul was lead to pray for the churches For example:

Eph 1:17-19

Praying for:

1. The Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better

2. Eyes of our understanding being enlightened;

(A) That you may know the hope of His calling.

(B) What are the riches of the glorious inheritance in the saints?

(C) His incomparably great power for us who believe.

Eph 3:14-19

Praying for:

A. Strength in our inner man.

B. To be rooted and established in love.

C. That we may have power together with the Saints.

D. To grasp how wide, how long, how high, and how deep the love of God is.

E. To know that the love of God surpasses all knowledge.

F. That we may be filled to the measure of all the Fullness of God.

Col 1:9-12

1. Asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that

A. You may walk worthy of the Lord

B. And please Him in every way;

C. Bearing fruit in every good work,

D. Growing in the knowledge of God,

2. Being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that:

A. You may have great endurance and patience,

B. and give joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his people in the kingdom of light.

Philippians 1: 9-11

And this is my prayer:

That your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that

A. You will be able to discern what is best

B. And may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,

C. Filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

2 Thess 1:11-12

With this in mind we pray for you,

A. that our God may make you worthy of His calling,

B. And that by His power He may fulfill your every desire for goodness, and your every deed prompted by faith.

C. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

In this way there are also many biblical prayers. When God answers these prayers, we will be completely changed persons altogether.

PSALMS

One more powerful way of praying is through the book of Psalms. When we are led by the Spirit to pray, God will also lead us through the scriptures Psalms. And as you begin to assimilate the Psalms, you can convert them as prayers before God, through which you are able to experience God’s glory and fire in your life. This will help you align yourself to God’s will and purpose for your life. Psalm 27 could be a good example. It is one of the core psalms about intimacy with the Lord.

One thing I ask from the lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”

(Psalms 27:4)
