We are still Alive – Faith became a Miracle – The Power of Psalm 91

Psalm 91 is perhaps the most favorite of my prayers. Be it anxiety, fear, evil forebodings or restlessness, I try to say this powerful Psalm that guarantees the Lords Protection in a miraculous way.

On the 26th of Decemeber 2010, we were on our way to Kerala, a state in the South of India. Though born and brought up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, yet another state in South of India, I have my roots in Kerala….and of course, it was the Lords will that I marry a young man from the state of Kerala. It was an arranged marriage, and we set on a road trip to Kerala (close to 10-11 hours) for my engagement and wedding consecutively.

The marriage party consisted of my father’s brothers and wives , my little niece, my mom and me….and our dog – a 1.5 year old female labrador named Faith. Since it was planned that we stay in Kerala for a while, until marriage, it was decided that Faith will not be left behind. Just like any other dog, she was a wonderful pet, who loved us in all ways she could, and I was her favourite. She was my dog, so we shared a good bonding……

We set out at around 4 am in the morning…a steady drive with stops here and there for refreshments and rest.

While others in the family, said their prayers and sang devotional songs loudly….I prayed Psalm 91…I repeated this powerful prayer over and over again…and managed to chant the Psalm, around 10 – 12 times, calling on the Lords protection during the entire journey.

We crossed over to the state of Kerala by around 4 pm. At around 5 pm, we stopped for a break, and a cup of coffee. We sighted no coffee shops during the drive and hence we pulled over, the minute we saw one. It was a highway, in the district of Wadakanchery. The highway was narrow and frequented by lorries and a pretty dangerous road.

Leaving the ladies behind, the men folk crossed over to buy coffee. I decided to cross over as well, as our water bottles were close to empty. Faith, was my buddy in all sense and stuck beside me and barked the skies off, if I went missing even for a minute. So after chaining her to a post, behind the van, and giving her water to drink I crossed over, when she was busy lapping up the water.

I brought the water bottles, and was waiting to cross the road, when Faith saw me from other side and started barking…I motioned to my uncle, that I am going over and as I spoke to him, I heard a huge THUD!. I turned to see that Faith had lunged forward breaking the chains and crossed the highway to get to me and a passing van hit her…She lay motionless.

I did the stupidest of things, a human being could do (I still feel silly that I was not using my brains then). I crossed the highway, without looking to the left or the right, for vehicles….All that I could think of, was to get her off the road, before the next vehicle hit her.

Seeing me run to the dogs rescue, not paying attention to the fast vehicles, my aunts and mother, cried out with their hands waving in the air, sure that I was the next one to be run over!

But I was safe. Faith was moving and on seeing that, using all my strength, I coaxed Faith to get up and gently got her to the side of the road….I was crying…the dog was in a state of shock and bleeding…she had difficulty walking but was alive and not dead!

Looking back…How was it, that the dog, was not run over, in spite of the fact that a van had hit her….How was it that there was no vehicles behind this van that hit her, on that busy highway, and that would mean, the dog’s instant death. (Obviously the second vehicle would have killed her if not the first). How was it that the dog was still alive even after the collision?

How was it that no vehicles, ran me down – I crossed with my eyes on the dog and not on the road…Remember, it was a busy highway, frequented by lorry / truck drivers known for their rash driving….My aunts told me later on, that as I crossed, two vehicles passed by me, dodging me…

The Answer is simple – Psalm 91 assured the Lords Protection.

On closely examining Faith, there were no fractures or any serious injury…but a few bruises and a small cut in her tongue…After a day she was back to normal, and became the frisky dog she was. She is hale and hearty…Faith was called “miracle” for some days after the incident.

And I am happily married to a fine young man.

This instance in my life, made my faith in Psalm 91 grow in leaps and bounds. I believe and yes, my family members also believe that it was Psalm 91 that saved us.

“For He will command His angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against the stone”- Psalm 91, verses 11 & 12.

Yes the Lord and a battalion of angels were there at that moment – Protecting me and my dog.

Else, the happy marriage party would have turned into a mourning funeral procession…the dead bodies being Me and my dog.

Dear Readers, the Lords protection is promised, whenever we recite the Psalm, believing in all that He has said. Please include this Psalm, in your daily prayers.

I take this opportunity, to profusely thank my Lord, for loving me so much and keeping me safe and sound. No One will ever take His place in my life.
