What does the Bible mean by the knowledge of God?

“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverb 9:10

Jesus Christ did not die simply that we may have knowledge of the Bible. Jesus Christ died that we may know God.

The Hebrew concept is knowing is different to the Greek concept. Greek style knowledge is scientific, academic, reasoned knowledge. It can be totally detached from emotion. To give a natural illustration of this: many know that junk food is bad for them, and exercise is helpful, but how many know it enough to be wise in these areas? Or: many know that they will die and leave the earth, but how many act as if personal accumulation of wealth is more important than giving to God’s eternal purposes?

Many Christians are full of Greek style knowledge of God, and this is like a vaccine against Hebraic, full-bodied, experiential intimate knowledge of our God, who is a “consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:28).

Most of us have a mixture of Hebraic and Greek style knowledge of God. That is why many born again Christians who have had even various limited encounters with the Holy Spirit can be so deceived on so many issues. We can act as if the Word of God is not true, because our Hebraic knowledge of God is limited, and therefore we lack the fear of the Lord.

Join me on the quest to KNOW the LORD, in the Hebraic sense. This is bigger than having wealth, health, fame or influence. You can have those things and still go to hell. Even if you lost all these things, but gained the KNOWLEDGE of GOD, you would be ahead. And God can add those lesser things very quickly to your life, just as he did in Job’s life after he went through all those sufferings.

Job 42:10 And the LORD restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

But what was Job’s greatest benefit after his trials? Was it that he had twice as much materially as before, and a nicer family? No. Hear the words of Job after his season of horrible trials:

Job 42:5 “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You.”

The knowledge of God is so important that it outweighs the value of family, health, friendships and money. If we believe that, let us pursue God like fanatics. If we don’t believe that, perhaps we are making a similar choice to Adam, who chose joining his wife over obedience to God. In making that choice of the best gifts of God over God Himself, Adam precipitated the ultimate disaster for himself and all his descendants.

Therefore let us seek to eat from the Tree of Life, which is Jesus. If we don’t know His voice very well yet, if we haven’t seen His face, at least let us seek out the next best thing, which is the knowledge of His Word. The deeper that Word penetrates in our hearts, the better we will come to know God, and the more we will depart from evil. This can be done through meditation on the Word.

I only wish I had practiced this message myself fully over the years. Having practiced it only partially until now, I can say that the fruit in my life has been correspondingly limited. It might seem good to others but I am sure God is not impressed.

Therefore let us know, let us press on to know the Lord.
