What is a Blessing?

Chapter 4

What Is A Blessing?

A blessing..…to pronounce a wish of happiness onto someone, or to set apart for holy purposes, to praise or glorify God or the Lord Jesus Christ, to speak God’s goodness to one another.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary
(which used the KJV to
explain it’s definitions)

God spoke a blessing over Abraham that affects every believer today. This is one of the first examples of a blessing in the Bible. Notice a blessing is a spoken utterance, just as a curse is also spoken. A blessing starts with words. It is real, it is tangible, it even carries visible substance.

It is interesting to note that everything in the garden of Eden was available to Adam and Eve if they did one thing – obey. When they disobeyed, a great curse came upon all mankind to every color, nation, creed, or religion. Obeying God’s Word without fail will always bring blessings. Notice each of the following blessings in Deuteronomy hinge upon hearing and obeying the voice of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 28:1-14
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:
And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.
Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.

Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.
Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.
The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.
And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.
And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee.
The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.
And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

God Wants To Bless His Children

It is always God’s will that mankind be blessed. A curse can only come from disobedience. The first thing that God did for mankind was to bless them. Redemption of mankind was God’s answer for their disobedience. It started clear back in Genesis chapter three. Jesus redeemed us from the curse in Galatians 3:13.

Galatians 3:13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Even we, as born again Christians, cannot willfully disobey God and expect that curses will not fall upon us.13 The curse is the consequence of sin, iniquity, and transgressions. We as Christians must do our very best to walk as Jesus walked. But God knew us from the beginning to the end, so He provided us Christians with I John 1:9.

I John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

In short, all of God’s goodness and promises are blessings. When we do not see those things happening, we must seek to find the cause. We want to have God’s fullness and be the kind of Christians that demonstrate God’s blessings which attract the lost world. If we ignore our right to receive God’s blessings because of traditional teachings (such as the one which says that Christians cannot be cursed), and the world can look at us and see that our Christian life has all the same problems as non-Christians (in contradiction to all the hundreds of divine promises of blessings in the Scriptures), what will convince them of the goodness of God and the salvation and deliverance that is available through Jesus Christ?

The promises and blessings of God should be both real and obvious to a dying world. A blessing is the opposite of a curse. A blessing sets someone apart for holy purposes, but a curse sets them apart for unholy purposes. We want to shine with God’s blessings!

In the fall of 2002, the authors were ministering together with a team of ministers in Romania. Carl was speaking at a Gypsy church in an inner city church in the capital city of Bucharest. That night, God moved powerfully to break the authority of the bastard curse off the congregation, and the results were astonishing. Recounting the incident later, he wrote:

I had taught on the curse of the bastard in the United States a couple of times. I was still in the middle of studying it and trying to figure it out. As I began to teach on this subject and build towards what the Word had to say, the Lord began to show me how these people were so badly affected by this curse.

The person who was interpreting for me told me that she refused to say the word “bastard”. I showed her that it was in the Bible in Deuteronomy 23 and in Hebrews 12, also. She still refused to say the word even if it was in the Bible. I asked her to just say the word “illegitimate” but she continued to refuse because these people, she said, had so much guilt in this area.

As we continued to have a discussion in front of the whole congregation, an elderly Romanian Gypsy woman spoke out, in Romanian, “You mean bastard, don’t you?” I do not remember exactly what the word is in Romanian, but it was quite clear that she had understood. At this point, others in the congregation got very excited and began waving their arms and saying to my reluctant interpreter, “You interpret what this man is saying. This is very common and nearly every family in the church has it in their bloodline.”

The elderly woman continued speaking. She said, “I myself never knew who my father was. Does the Word of God have an answer for this?” I said, “Of course it does!”

I continued to share and to teach them what the Word says about the bastard curse. When I was finished, I asked them if they wanted me to pray and get rid of that curse.

“Of course,” they shouted! “Yes! Yes! Yes!”

All the people hurried up to the front and we prayed to God in the name of Jesus Christ to break every curse of the bastard off each and every one of them, remove all the condemnation from it, and bless them so that they could come into the congregation of the Lord. We prayed that their fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ would be very sweet and that it would have the power that God intended for them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

There was much joy and rejoicing. Tears were streaming down their cheeks. They truly felt the difference deep down in their souls. I then urged them to go home and get their families together and break off the curses in the name of Jesus Christ and speak blessings in His name. I told them to speak the blessing that they would come into the congregation of the Lord.

Within weeks I was getting e-mails from Romania telling of the excitement that was happening in the church. There had been a great outbreak of the gospel of the Lord Jesus and it was moving forward in the young people. The church was gaining in numbers every day, and at each service there were thirty to forty new people. This growth has continued. Many services have been standing room only, and the heart to evangelize has spread into the pews. The people were so excited that they were going out 2 hours before church was starting and winning the lost and bringing them to church. A new church has been planted from this work about 40 kilometers away.

When people are set free from their bondage, as from the bastard curse, they are set free indeed and the Kingdom of God expands!

13Proverbs 26:2
As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

Sin, willful disobedience, bring the cause. This is what enables curses to afflict believers when they sin.

      A Walk With Grace…

One day I walked, I walked and saw, I saw a sight, the sight I saw, the day I walked and saw.

The day I walked, I walked and heard, I heard a sound, a sound I heard, the day I walked and heard.

The day I walked, I walked and touched, I touched and felt, and felt by touch, the day I walked and touched.

The day I walked, I walked and tasted, I tasted a taste, a tasty taste, the day I walked and tasted.

The day I walked, I walked and smelt, I smelled a smell, and smelt the smell, the day I walked and smelt.

The day I walked, I walked and pondered, I pondered a thought, in thought I pondered, the day I walked and pondered.

And now I sit, I sit in wonder, at the wonderful gifts, given to me, by God the day I walked.

I remember what pat robertson of the 0700 club said,

the haiti earthquake is cause by sin (disobedience). so all those other innocent children who were killed deserve punishment?

what about the 2004 tsunami in indonesia? hundreds of children were killed because they have hidden sin?

I think your article is rigid & insensitive.

just like the disciples in john 9 said ‘the reason for this man’s blindness is because of sin (his parents & their parents)
the book of job, his neighbors said that the reason why job is suffering is SIN.

    • Timothy Luke says:

Pat Robertson was referring to historical references that the nation made a pact with the devil that it would serve him if he gave them independence from France…. That would certainly open a door…

Like it or not, sin is the culprit in the curse abounding…. Yes, innocent people lose their lives, but it is not due to ‘their’ sin, the sins of others can also affect us…. the sin of Achan comes to mind. Over 30 people lost their lives because of the sin of this man. Achan’s wife and children also perished… how insensitive. We must be sensitive to the reality of sin and the penalties of it, if we are to be truly sensitive to the people who are afflicted by sin. I can say you have sin, without condemning you in my heart.

“The curse causeless shall not come.”

As for Job, God told Satan to behold Job, how there was none so righteous as he. God was not messing around when He said that…. Job was righteous – according to the law, however. Yet, Job in his heart had great fear. In the beginning you see how he sacrificed for his children daily, if perchance they had sinned. He later said, when all was lost (including them), “that which I feared greatly is come upon me.”

God sees the heart. He knew Job was bound in fear. Jesus said the He is the Vine and we are the branches, if any man bears fruit, the Husbandman prunes him that he may bear more fruit.” This was the case with Job.

God did not want him bound up with fears all his life. In the end, God had Job’s children covered. God has eternity figured out, and I do not question that Job’s children are safe in His care. God then multiplied Job at the end and restored all things… but now Job was able to worship God from a pure heart. Job at the end did repent. This shows that he saw things he hadn’t seen before and was now a changed man…

We have to know what it is we are being sensitive to. Jesus was pretty insensitive to heal a man and then say, “go and sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.” That something sounds “insensitive” does not make it wrong or right. We have to look at the facts and then proclaim them clearly. It would be insensitive to let a person go on their way merrily, when we know the bridge is out.

      • kaishinden79 says:

so is there any historical fact about the comment Pat robertson made about the haitian having a pact with the devil? or is it another fundamentalistic thinking of a man who thinks he is never wrong?

‘I can say you have sin, without condemning you in my heart.’

and if you say I have sin that means you are perfect & sinless which you are lying if you say you don’t sin. and when you point sin in others you ARE condemning just like the neighbors of job. the first thing that came out of their mouth was sin but they did not know the issue.

and if we are always sensitive to sin, we will never move forward and not all the sufferings are not because of sin. most of the teachings are pointed to sin and those who point to sin do not know the issues & they lack the knowledge & understanding like the pharisees & experts in the law, they quick to look to something to accuse that is why people in those times were in bondage of stupid teachings.

luke 13:2 do you think that bec. these galileans suffered in this way there were greater sinners than all other gallileans?

or those 18 people killed when the tower of siloam fell on them? do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in jerusalem.

and by the way, I have an uncle that is now emotionally damage & traumatized because he was abused by his father. so is it because of sin that is why he was abused that ended up in emotional tragedy? and I had the same experience. it is insensitive not to tell others that the bridge is out but it is also insensitive for you to give a snake when somebody is asking for a fish, a bread for a stone & shut the door on someone’s face when they are knocking at the door.

        • Timothy Luke says:

Your reasoning is faulty. Paul said, “ALL have sinned,” He also said he was chief among sinners. You are rambling off emotion, rather than taking your thoughts captive and thinking clearly…

You are not understanding the point. If you have emotional pain from your father’s abuse, it is your father’s sin that caused the initial pain and it is our response to it that can further that pain, or release it to Jesus, who came to heal the broken hearted…

          • kaishinden79 says:

first, if you say that ALL HAVE SINNED then you sin too?

second, christians are the ones who have FAULTY REASONING not those receive it.

malachi 3:10 – the priest are the MESSENGERS OF GOD, & they lack knowledge ( faulty reasoning) that is why they cause many to stumble.

and HOW do you expect healing when all you do is POINT TO SIN.

Luke 13:10 is a great example.
the indignant priest are the ones who said ‘There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”
christ healed the crippled woman but the pastor said ‘it is unlawful to heal on a sabbath’.

Luke 18:35-41 – christ said “Receive your sight; your FAITH has healed you.” but

38 He (blind man) called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet (SHUT UP) , but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

people like you are the ones who preach sin that is why many stumble. tell people to SHUT UP! maybe you think that you are the descendants of Israel

and finally, is the comment Pat robertson made about Haiti really true?
            Yes or no

          • warrior daughter says:

            Why are you so angry????

You ask about suffering and I am posting a link to my blog on suffering:

            http://www.christian-faith.com/forjesus/reasons-for-suffering

I hope this helps you to see why there is suffering…This is writen for the believer but when there is tragedy in the world, people cry out to Jesus ..His love for them and His compassion for them helps them in the time of the tragedy.

On another note the Bible says and the Bible contains truth that “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”…Romans 3:23 Notice the word All …The verse does not say some, or most, or a few, or several but All meaning everyone…

          • Timothy Luke says:

            Kaishindin,

Yes, Christians sin. We have a way to overcome sin and so, those who seek to overcome have a way, through Jesus Christ. I guarantee you, I sin a lot less than I used to!!

Please read my story of how my wife and I were miraculously healed. It is called, Our Story We were in bondage to sin, even as Christians, until the Lord lead us out of our sin, and out of the disease and barrenness caused by it. I am a man with an profound experience, while you are a man with a mere argument, fueled by anger because you refuse to try to understand, or simply cannot see, the truth I am proclaiming….

Jesus Christ came as the true Sabbath. We find our rest in him. Please take a moment to read Entereing the New Testament Sabbath Rest We are commanded to cease from our labors (sin, works of the flesh) even as God ceased from His works on the seventh day after creation. The same Jesus who healed on the Sabbath, He said, “go and sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon thee.’ This is consistent. It is like saying, “if you stop hitting your thumb with a hammer, and give me a moment, I will heal it!” “The wages of sin is death,” disease is death by degrees.

Your logic is amazing! “people like you are the ones who preach sin that is why many stumble…” Stumbling itself is borne of sin. Jesus is the Light of the World. He came to shine the light on sin, that people might not stumble. Well did John write these words….

John 3:17-20“For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. “

I tell people about sin, because it is real, it is ACTIVE and it is ALIVE. It stems from evil and it brings forth bondage, disease and destruction. People need to know there is a way to be free from it and the power of it. My life is a testimony to that. Read, Our Story and you will know why I proclaim, what I proclaim.

I will look up the thing about Haiti…

Here is the Historical report on Haiti and the pact with the Devil, taken from, “Immigration and Religion in America: Comparative and Historical Perspectives
By Richard D. Alba, Albert J. Raboteau, Josh DeWind” You can look it up online HERE… scroll to page 345. Here is text as follows…

“According to Haitian national history, the revolutionary war was launched on the eve of a religious ceremony at a place in the north called Bwa Kayiman (Bois Caiman, in French). At that ceremony on August 14, 1791, an African slave named Boukman sacrificed a pig, and both Kongo and Creole spirits descended to possess the bodies of the participants, encouraging them and fortifying them for the upcoming revolutionary war. Despite deep ambivalence on the part of intellectuals, Catholics, and the moneyed classes, Vodou has always been linked with militarism and the war of independence and, through it, the pride of nattional sovereignty.

“The [Haitian] Pentecostal Church demands active rejection of such Afro-Creole traditions and regards them as satanic practice. Sermons and literature about Haiti urges missions to “pull down strongholds” and aim efforts at destroying working Vodou temples in various ways. In group rituals of prayer and fasting, the Pentecostals marched through public space performing exorcisms at spots considered sacred in Vodou and recast as satanic for Pentecostals.

“One such “crusade” ceremony has had a lasting resonance for Haitian evangelicals in New York. A group of Haitian Pentecostal pastors based near Port-au-Prince launched a serious critique of the Haitian government and indeed of Haitian nationalist mythology, when they marched on August 14, to the reputed site of the original religious ritual in 1791 when the slaves of St. Domingue vowed to fight for freedom. The past ors intended to exorcise the Vodou spirits who still governed the site and “win” the space “for Jesus.” In a complicated view that blames the Catholic Church for blessing the slave market and racializing evil in terms of African’s skin, the leaders of the “Bois Caiman for Jesus” crusade blamed slavery for causing Africans to turn to Satan as their divine protector. In invoking African and Creole spirits to possess the religious leaders who had attended, Boukman had made a “pact with the devil” and dedicated Haiti to serve Satan. It was this unholy alliance that had been responsible for Haiti’s subsequent 200 years of misery. [Emphasis added.]”

8 But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,” says the LORD Almighty

  4. 3chelon says:

I agree with this, currently I am going through this … to align myself with God’s will for me in regards to being set apart from Him, becoming rooted in fellowship, giving up idols etc … but I’ve experienced it must be through experiencing His grace and love not through our own efforts to obey Him.

Rather its by His awesome grace which we should be delving deeply into and receiving blessing from, which will lead us to repentance to Him :p

‘But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness’ Romans 4:5

It’s surely by grace through faith that we work out our salvation and receive all of God’s abundance blessings, and that grace should lead us to living deeply and lovingly for Him in response to that Grace. Having a relationship with Him that is passionate and based on His grace and love toward us?

  5. kaishinden79 says:

‘Even we, as born again Christians, cannot willfully disobey God and expect that curses will not fall upon us.13 The curse is the consequence of sin, iniquity, and transgressions’

Obeying God’s Word without fail will always bring blessings

I was told to obey Malachi 3:10 regarding the tithe. there it said to give your ‘10% & the doors of heaven will open & you will not have any room to store it.’
what kind of blessings? is it money, material things?
and I watched televangelist & listened to pastor quoting this verse malachi 3:10. their formula is this

faith = obedience = give your 10% / sow a seed of faith = you will be rich / successful

this did not work. the only thing I receive was a page of label with my name & address on it & a mug. that is the ‘blessing’ I receive.

    but proverbs say that
    ‘hard work brings profit’
sharpen your skills & you will succeed
acquire knowledge & understanding you will succeed
he who work his land will have abundant food

pastors say to obey the word of god but their teachings causes people to stumble bec. they lack knowledge & understanding. they give a one verse-one-sentence solution which life does not work that way.

luke 13 states that the leader of the synagogue told jesus to obey the sabbath law when he healed the crippled woman. will the crippled woman receive the blessing of healing when you are told to obey stupid teachings? NO. you will suffer the result of ignorance not obedience.
