Turn off Your Idol – Your Television

Professing Christians that have time for television but no time for God’s Word are idolaters. Don’t be one of them!

Please consider the following Scripture:

I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. (Psalm 101:3)

Can you identify with the Psalmist here? When you watch TV, can you honestly say that you are setting no wicked thing before your eyes? Can you honestly say that you hate the work of those who are perverse (their TV productions, for example)?

The same question can of course be asked concerning what you are looking at on the Internet.

Isn’t it true that the television “brings the world into your home” as one TV manufacturer boasted on their marketing material? The Bible says, “Do not love the world, nor the things in the world”. (1 John 2:15).

Would your life feel empty if you got rid of your TV signal and only watched useful videos, for example, as the need arose?

If it would, then obviously you are filling your life with the wrong stuff.

The issue is not the DEVICE of television, it is the kind of content that we allow into our minds. What kind of people are we allowing to control the subject matter that our mind considers? Are they godly people?

If time is our most valuable asset, what are we doing with it in front of the TV set?

Has God provided no godly way to relax and be refreshed? Do we need ungodly television, time consuming computer and video games and the like in order to make good use of the time God has entrusted us with?

Have the commands to pray without ceasing, to meditate on God’s Word day and night, to preach the gospel to all creation and to make disciples of all nations left us with so much free time that we feel compelled to spend hours in front of the television or pursuing entertainment on our various computer systems and games consoles?

Are we the ones who are doing the will of God, who fear the Lord, who look to Jesus Christ as our standard?

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: (1 Peter 1:13-17)
