Traditions of Men

“Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.” (Mark 7:13)

I have discovered that some of the greatest enemies to preaching the gospel are right in many of our churches. These enemies are cleverly disguised, but yet quite effective in preventing the move of the Holy Spirit and the operation of His gifts. Satan isn’t really all that concerned if we get together and have church, hear some preaching, sing a few songs and then go home, as long as we don’t operate in the power and revelation of the Spirit.

Religious tradition is one of Satan’s greatest weapons against strong, local churches. He perpetrates religious ideologies and doctrine so that he can work unhindered in the lives of believers, and to repel those that have any common sense. Even a sinner wants to be free, but if you tell a religious person that they can be free, they’ll want to kill you!

Satan has believers resigning themselves to things that he has brought into their lives, thinking those things are “the will of God,” when they are not the will of God at all. He destroys marriages, and divides families and churches; he inflicts believers with sicknesses and diseases, and keeps a yoke of poverty and shame upon many of our lives because of a lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6).

There’s an old argument that God is sovereign and all powerful, but yet at the same time highly incompetent, negligent, cruel and malicious, or He is not sovereign at all. The reasoning is that there can be no other logical explanation for the cruelty and injustice in the world and in the church. There is, however, another explanation, of course, and Jesus has revealed it to us in His Word. The Word of God reveals that God is indeed sovereign, however, in His sovereignty He has chosen to delegate authority and responsibility to men (John 20:21, Mark 13:34, Luke 10:19).

Adam was created in the image of God, and he was created perfect. God gave him dominion over all the earth and everything in it, and he became the ruler, or “god” of this world (Genesis 1:26). Satan lied to Eve and told her that she could become like God, but she already was, for they were created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27, 3:5). She believed the lie, and Adam went along with it. God had given Adam authority, but he gave what God gave him over it to the devil through disobedience, and because of this, Satan became the “god of this world” (II Corinthians 4:4).

Jesus destroyed Satan’s power and stripped him of his authority when He went to the cross and rose again, and gave authority to every believer (Hebrews 2:14). He gave us authority over sin, and over the devil and all of his works. We have been redeemed from sickness and disease, destruction and calamity, premature death and poverty, if we only believe and act on what God has said in His Word.

Religion has taught that we have “no guarantee of tomorrow,” but this is part of the curse, not the blessing of Abraham (Galatians 3:13-14), and is only true for the unbeliever, not the believer. We have surety of long life (Deuteronomy 28:66, Psalm 91:16). We must know our rights, or Satan will take advantage of our ignorance.

Satan is not a law-abiding spirit, and he will continue to cause trouble unless he is apprehended by a born-again believer through faith, standing steadfast on the Word of God. It is upon the rock of the revelation of Jesus Christ, the living Word of God, that the gates of hell will not prevail against, not religious tradition (Matthew 16:13-18).

Religious traditions come in many different forms. For example, the devil would rather have us kissing a Bible rather than reading it. He would rather have us saying nice, dinner and bedtime prayers that make everyone feel good, rather than speaking the Word of God in faith. He would rather have us believing that something is “just the will of God,” and therefore doing nothing about it, rather than believing the truth and standing firm on the promises of God.

“Well Brother Tom, are you preaching that we should never have any problems and float through life on a bed of ease?” The truth is, if you live by faith, you’ll have more attacks and problems then you have ever had in your life because Satan will attempt to discourage you and cause you to quit. He will seek to steal the Word of God out of your heart in order to cause you to become unfruitful (Mark 4:14-20). But in all of these things we are more than conquerors! (Romans 8:37) A person who lives by faith will overcome and be victorious over every attack, problem and opposition (Psalms 34:19, Revelation 3:5, 12, 21).

Religious tradition has been around for a long time; in fact, it was alive and well back in Jesus’ time, and He had much to say about it. It was so prevalent in His hometown that He, Jesus the Son of God, could do no mighty work! (Mark 6:4-16) It doesn’t say He wouldn’t, it says He couldn’t! Jesus had compassion on the sinner but had no mercy for those who were religious. Religious spirits are the worst kind of evil, for they appear righteous before men but their hearts are far from God. For this reason they are dangerous, because men do not discern their treachery (Matthew 23:27).

God desires to reveal the fullness of His glory to His people, and He wants us to live victoriously and whole.  Religious traditions can deeply frustrate this desire (Galatians 2:21). He desires us to know Him and be free from every satanic bondage and oppression; to serve Him without fear all the days of our lives (Luke 1:74-75). But we must know, believe, speak and act on what God has actually said in order for His promises to manifest in our lives (Romans 5:2).

What do YOU think?

  1. One of the mistakes people make is trying to "get" Jesus to fill them with the Holy Spirit by doing all kinds of things in order to convince Him to "move." The truth is that God has already moved; He gave the Holy Ghost over 2,000 years ago on the day of Pentecost. The only thing that God is requiring of us is to only believe! (Mark 5:36, Luke 11:10-13) It really is that simple! However, our minds can complicate it so much that there is no room for faith. The things of God cannot be received through our intellect, for they are spiritual; they must be accessed by our spirit through faith (Romans 5:2).

This is true and trying to figure it out is a waste of time. When we ,after we have done all, praised all, cried and shouted, say I surrender to Jesus,He will pour out a blessing you cannot contain! we must wait on the Lord,he who seeketh, findeth. The sacrafice on the alter is you, don;t dwell on tongues, praise him not so much in repeating words but praise him with a whole heart. remember tongues are not the goal.Being filled is so much more.Tongues will come, but remember they are evidence not the power,

  2. Holyroller_11 says:

I agree with you on this and will also say, when christians are truly hungry and spend much time in the alters of church this does scare the devils spirits, when saints stay until they hear from heaven. A lost art I fear, leaving room for false doctrine to slip in. People forget where they have come from, but it does rain on the just as well as the unjust. Many forget this and blame everything on being a saint or sinner when bad things happen regardless. Everyone will be tried in this world to be either fine gold or stubble, this is why we have trouble, not because we have been good that day or not. Actually, satan is in high places of goverment trying to set up their antichrist,as the lower levels of spirits try to tear down the old ways. In Isaiah, the word says we will look on satan in his suffering and say,Is this the one who tormented the nations,as to say we let this cause us so much trouble,as to say he’s nothing.and that is right,we are more than conquers through Christ.

    • Holyroller_11 says:

I have noticed that many, as have churches.changed the teaching of the actual infilling of the real HolyGhost, partly for attendance, but also because of not being willing to spend time seeking .The infilling is a very real experence, with eye opening, power so strong you will want him to tone it down for concern of exploding from the inside. But it is the greatest experence on the planet! I’m sure someone on this site will acuse this of being evil, but they did that to peter also. I would that everyone that reads this would know of this,Then greater miracles would be witnessed and souls would be saved and christians strenthened,Its sad to know many have not had this, though they profess a belief of babtizism, but without phyiscal drunk in the Spirit or instant healing or the real speaking in tongues. Some churches practise teaching new converts how to actually speak in some kind of tongue tieing, repeating sentences over and over until that get all tied up and thinking they recieved but decieved instead.

      • Amen.. Many people don’t receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues, either because they are afraid of it, or because it is unfamiliar to them. Many have been taught by their pastors and churches that tongues have “passed away,” or that it is not for every believer, or even that it is “of the devil.” But the infilling of the Spirit is indeed one of the most powerful, life-changing experiences that a believer can have, and also one of the areas that the devil has taken much care to obscure in religious tradition.

      • bornagainbytheblood says:

You’re right. So many think they have the real Holy Ghost because they speak in tongues willfully. I was taught to never do that, as I am seeking the baptism of the Spirit myself. I know He is going to come in my hour of visitation.

        • Holyroller_11 says:

This also is a hot topic and quick for attack, well anyway,This is the real deal,The HolyGhost is the third Person of the Trinty, sent to us when Jesus returned to the Father. While Jesus is not on earth,he is sitting on his throne. He was sent 1st to convict the hearts of people to repent of their sins. 2nd to clean up and root out the old sinful nature from our flesh and spirit. If the old nature is not changed(this is not a belief but an action of the HolyGhost) 3rd only after the cleaning of the heart (physical) the babtizism or indwelling of the HolyGhost can happen.but understand this, the HolyGhost inhabits the praises of his people. to make it clear, while seeking, must be praying and praising and glorifying God .Not in a depressing ,got beat today, attitude or forget it,try on a better day. Also the evidence is sometimes stamering lips, sometimes tongues.People with quiet natures or spirit don;t always just outwardly speak in other tongues, but have trembling lips, dependant upon personality.Quiet people sometimes get uncertain because of this, and actualy accused of not recieving,a cruel thing to one knows where you stand with God but him and you. Now these things are evidence but you will know for sure when it really happens! Often time in prayer is vital,so don’t get depressed if it take a little time,The purpose however is power to witness both of the experence and of Christ who gave it. Also to stand when your faith is tested. Despite what some will say,its not all about casting things out of healing and mircles, but when the need arises this also.Today casting out things you can’t see is easier than healing people with problems you can see,but all things are possible with God.

          • bornagainbytheblood says:

Yes, willfully speaking in tongues is a hot topic, and one that many have been deceived by. I’m glad that I was taught by a real Holy Ghost filled believer to never do that.

Anyway, from your experience, how long should one tarry at the altar glorifying God? I praise God with my whole heart saying “Glory”, “Glory”, “Glory”. I know divine determination is strongly needed to go through to the real Holy Ghost baptism. The devil battles our minds as we seek to distract us from the promise. He’ll make you think that you’re not good enough; he’ll make you think that you have not fasted enough; he’ll make you think that you need to make more restitution from your past; he’ll grind you down with any distraction to rob you from the promise. This is why singleness of focus and divine determination are greatly needed to push the devil and his demons away as one seeks to be filled by the fire of the Holy Ghost. Lord, grant thy servant more divine determination! Amen.

Everyone is different,I have noticed over the years, some it is easier than others,so I will first say, this is my opinion for the sake of peace. It seems to me that less motivated, single minded receive with less travail. I am not saying this as a putdown by no means,I am glad for those, sincere prayers availeth much. People that have a chance to reach more sinners, are greater threats to the enemy, and have a harder time getting in a spirit of prayer.Again let me say all soul winners are great wheather they help 1 or 101,you will not lose your reward! God bless all his children. As for me,when I was seeking the babtizism,I was hungry and when church opened ,I would go to the alter and stay until service ended, and still stayed at least 1 hour more. Its a very emotional time when it seems everyone around you is shouting and nothing is happening to you. Everything is going through you head, your knees hurt, all emotions are going crazy,You pray, you try to think of everything to say to Jesus, that might get his attention. I did this about 3 or 4 services,my kids feel asleep on the unpaded pew,but nothing, people would pray for a minute or 2 then move to someone else,Finally when all the shout is gone from me,and tired and felling beat and about ready to call it quits,I had held my hands up and praising God,til I couldn’t any longer and was lowering them, something not seen, grabbed them and they hung in thin air, electric current would enter through my left arm through my chest and out my right arm and I heard the pop,and the power was so great,I went backward in the floor,I could feel wind blowing as if a window was open, all I could see was white light, there was no window, all lasted along time,it was after midnight before HE left. When I tryed to see everything was spinning,it took a little while before I could stand. My wife had to drive me home, What I learned from this, The harder you press, the greater the experence, the greater your testimony will be. Waves of freedom in prayer came, then nothing ,then waves again each one stronger than the last,my lips trembled, the tongues came later, The harder time you have to break through tells me 1 thing, You will be great in the Lord and satan’s folks are scared of you. This is no pep talk, this is the real deal. There are times when I was about to lose my temper, sparks would shoot through my chest and tickle my insides to the point my anger would turn to joy,and I would feel I was stopped before I went to far. press on your greatest blessing is waiting!! God Bless

            Hi Stephen

How does one pray in the spirit, if it is never done wilfully?
When you say willfully speaking in tongues, do you mean only upon the occasion of the initial in-filling (Baptism), or are you saying the initial in-filling, and every time there after?

            Eph 6:18
            Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
            1Co 14:2
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
            Mat 6:6
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
            1Co 14:4
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

            Be Blessed

I’ve been taught that one is to pray in their own language until the Holy Ghost takes over. The Holy Ghost speaks for Himself.

          • lookinforacity says:

            Hi Stephen

            Act 19:2
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
            Act 19:6
And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

This depiction of Peter, does not resemble your description.
“I’ve been taught that one is to pray in their own language until the Holy Ghost takes over.”

Isn’t there someone in your church, who can lay hands on you in like fashion?
Owing to the fact, you have been taught by a real Holy Ghost filled believer.

            Be Blessed

            Hi JIM,

Some people receive through the laying on of hands; some receive by the thousands when the Holy Ghost is called down upon them; and some have to seek diligently to receive. But, by no means are we to pretend that the Holy Ghost is speaking through us when we are doing it ourselves. That’s a dangerous thing to do, for the Holy Ghost speaks for Himself. Would you like it if someone were to mimic you? The Spirit is grieved when people do that.

For me, I know there is a real Holy Ghost baptism, and that’s what I expect to receive — by faith.

          • Whether a person speaks in tongues or not, they should continue to seek God earnestly. Its not a one time experience that removes all need for further seeking after God. If you ask for something from God, you should BELIEVE THAT YOU RECEIVE IT. Then act like you have received it. This is how faith works. But, of course, if you don’t believe you have received it, don’t act like you have. You know if you believe you have received it, or you don’t. But Jesus commands you to believe you receive it when you pray. Mark 11:24.

If one is seeking the HolyGhost and the evedence of speaking in tongues. 1st If you doupt your self, you didn;t recieve! 2nd You will know for sure! The cure for this is seek until He convinces you. He is powerful enough to make you sure, you can count on this and you will never forget it! after that you will be his witness after that you were filled. How can you witness of something when your not sure yourself. dig deep in the alter until he does the work.
