The war against the church

As part of my job, I regularly visit a church hall in Cambridge.
On the fence surrounding the building are posted leaflets advertising some of the activities that go on throughout the week. One poster is for a yoga class, another for a meditation workshop. There is no advertisement for weekly prayer or bible study at all.

I know what is going on. Sadly, this church and many others have decided that the only way to grow, is to merge traditional Christianity with new age philosophies.

As a meeting place for “secular humanism”, can this building really still be called a church?. It doesnt matter what it is called really. The question is whether the Spirit of God is welcomed or has to take a back seat as other spirits are invited in instead.

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:21

“You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.”

This is one example of how war is being waged upon the church in order to render it ineffective.
An other example that could be said to be the opposite extreme, is that of the charismatic movement.

I read recently that many of the charismatic organisations such as “Latter rain” and “Vineyard” have held meetings in which the Holy Spirit has been said to cause people to crawl around on the floor like dogs, shriek or laugh like hyenas. The anonymous author claims that these manifestations are demonic in nature and not a Holy Spirit anointing at all.
I would say that there may be a grain of truth in these suggestions.

pagan rituals held all over the world display a performance of demonic power in healing the sick or casting our of spirits.

Jesus himself was accused of this by the Pharisees. Matt 9:32-34

“While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”
But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.””

So the attack rages on. Many christians are not even aware of it.

The devil operates by stealth and cunning. Stealing away the precious foundations of the Christain faith but Jesus says in Matt 11;12

“From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.”

Its good to remember whos in charge.

It is sad that buildings formerly used to glorify God and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ are now used to invite in demonic spirits through yoga and new age meditation. This happens not because the “building” falls away but because people who have held positions of leadership amongst God’s people have at some stage turned away from true faithfulness to God in some sort of miserable attempt to attract a few people. These things happen in stages.

The Holy Spirit does not cause people to behave like animals. It is true that some charismatic churches have also embraced false spirits in their quest to see something happen.

The early church was at least charismatic but that did not make them immune to deception. False teachers of gnosticism were active even while the apostle John was still alive.

We should not reject something because it is supernatural, but we MUST test things according to God’s Word. I am against the teaching which says, “Just turn your mind off, stop praying, just receive”. That is anti-Scripture. The Bible says to charismatic christians “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are of God”.
