The Temptation Factor

The Temptation Factor
Matthew 4:1-11
V 1 “Then was Jesus led up by the spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the devil.”
Christs temptation, “the last Adam (1 Cor. 15:45), is easier to understand if contrasted to “The first man, Adam.” Adam was tempted when he held the position of lord of creation (Gen. 1:26). Adam had everything in his reign as lordship, except the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:16-17). Through the temptation of the woman Adam was tempted to get the one thing he was lacking in his dominion over creation (Gen. 3:1-6). Threw his disobedience Adam lost it all (Gen. 3:20-24). Now Jesus came as a lowly servant, he acted only in obedience to his father, God ( Phil. 2:5-8; Jn. 5:19; 8:28,54; Isa. 41:8 ). Jesus came so that he could redeem the fallen race and the creation that was under a divine curse (Gen 3:17-19; Romans 8:19-23).

Verse 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward hungry.
Verse 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones to be made bread.
Verse 4 But he answered and said, It is written that Man shall not live by the bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Satan wanted to get Jesus to act independent of God. Just as Adam had done in the beginning. After, 40 days and nights of fasting Jesus would have been very very hungry don’t you think? I know being human myself I would have been starving for any type of food. Satan thought because Jesus was human that his desire for food would be great after fasting for so long. Satan thought he would use this desire for food as a temptation. Yet Jesus told him that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. So think about that. How did Jesus overcome his temptation of food? He said he did not need food alone to live. He needed what to live? The words that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. There is a lot to think about here.

First of all God had told Adam to not eat the fruit from the tree of good and evil (Gen. 2:17). Do you think if Adam would have listened to God and obeyed and lived by the words that proceedeth out of Gods mouth he would not have brought down the curse upon mankind? Absolutely not. The words of God are given to use to keep us from making mistakes in this world. As, Adam found out the hard way. Jesus knew that he was being tempted by Satan to prove that he was the Son of God by turning the stones into bread. To satisfy his desires of the flesh not the desires of the spirit of God. He wanted Jesus to act out on his own. Turning what God had already made as stones into something else to meet his own desires. Which Jesus wasn’t having it. If God wanted him to have bread at that moment God would have brought him bread. He didn’t need to act alone.

Verse 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
Verse 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the son of God, cast thyself down; for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Verse 7 Jesus said unto him, Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not put the Lord, thy God, to the test.

Wow! There is so much in the next three verses where Jesus was tempted by Satan. First in verse lets at verse 5. How many of you know what the word pinnacle means? My next quick point is that you have to remember that if you do not know what a word means to God then you need to ask him and research it. The meaning mankind gave you to define it may be different. By which I mean that people substitute definitions of words to suit there self and there desires, wants, and needs. There look it up people. It could be a simple misconception of truth that will separate you from God and you don’t want that to happen. I am telling you because I don’t want that to happen to any of you. So, the word pinnacle is defined as “pointed turret on a buttress or roof ( Webster’s Basic Dictionary, Minerva Books, Ltd. New York, NY, 2010).”

So picture this high up top a temple, sitting on the edge of a roof, looking down towards the ground. It’s probably pretty high up wouldn’t you say? Satan wants Jesus to act independent of God and show that he’s the son of God by casting himself off the side. He tells is basically telling Jesus in verse 6 “Hey, your the son of god, throw yourself off the roof, it’s told that the angels will catch you and keep you from getting hurt.” This is how a lot people get confused. They think that it’s okay to test God and see what happens. It’s very tricky. Satan uses this to lead people astray by distorting the word of God and lieing. He knows that if you throw yourself off a building you can break your neck. I think maybe here Satan was hoping that would happen. So people will see Jesus as just any other human. When he hit the ground went splat and was dead. Cause at that point in time there was no resurrection and the man Adams curse had not been broken yet. Also, I believe that in situations like this Satan uses “ the if you have faith in God, then your acts will show, faith without acts is dead.” However, Jesus overcame this temptation by saying “Thou shalt not put the Lord your God to the test.” Which doesn’t mean you should test and pray to see if God hears you. Satan wants you to think you can’t ask God do you hear me? All temptations are used with one goal in satans mind. Separate you from God. So it is saying that you shouldn’t jump off the roof to test and see if God will save your life and you won’t break you fool neck and die. The scripture satan was referring to about the angels have charge over thee if you dash your foot and stumble. It’s another lesson and a good one. Yet it just means like a little child if you slip and fall that god has assigned the angels to help you stand up dust you off and to send you back out to try something else or do it again with safety. If an accident occurs God protects us from harm. Which brings me to my next point. There’s a lot of bunny trails on anything you study. Don’t get lost in the tunnels. Stay focused on the voice of God and receive what he’s teaching you.

Verse 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceedingly high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them,
Verse 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
Verse 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Begone, Satan, for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Verse 11 Then the devil leaveth him and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Now were really getting deeper into the meat of the word here. Here Satan was offering Jesus the world that he saw in verse 8. Satan was telling Jesus that if he fell down and worshiped him he would give it all to him. Satan first off is a lier. He may walk around this world puffed up and angry trying to rule his way. Yet Papa gave us the ability to choose who we serve. Who we worship in this world. Satan wants mankind to worship him and obey him. He wants us all to obey him and follow his leadership and command in this world. He wants to be like Papa God. It’s important to realize that when reading verse 8. Satan also has given us the choice to follow Papa God or him. He’s just not as kind and loving about it. He warfare on the battlefield of the mind to trick us into believing him as the truth. Because he knows if we see him for what he really is no one would listen to him. So, he uses the shift the blame factor, to make himself look good. Which another study all together.

So in verse 8 satan shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world. Now if you think about it there’s a lot of kingdoms in this world. Each with it’s own abundance of wealth and benefits. I want to remind you here to that satan will entice you with what serving him will benefit you. He wants to show you his retirement plan if you will. However, I want you all to remember as with any retirement plan read the fine print. Do some research. Don’t just be oh yea that sounds great. Read a little more into it. Know what your getting yourself into first. Before you make any final decisions think about. Stand up for what you believe is right for you. Even if the package seems to be sorta okay. Yet there’s some little points here in there you figure isn’t for you. However, down further the benefit seems to be overwhelming you with want. So your like okay whatever, I can deal with these little things for awhile. So that way I get that benefit right there. Remember, to shop around first. Don’t jump on the first offer your given. And remember with satan he’ll be back and try to keep sweetening the deal.

Jesus chose to serve Papa God. He responded with “Begone, Satan, for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” So by this we can determine Jesus read the retirement plan that Papa God offered. He knows it front to back. Word for word. He chose Papa God and told “Satan to hit the pavement (meaning leave, get the heck out of here dude for real.).” Jesus knows Papa God inside and out threw n threw. We should all follow the example Jesus gave us. If we study the bible and learn about Papa God we can know him to. It depends on how much effort we put forth. If we seek God he will seek us. Jesus said in Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given you, seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” Jesus doesn’t lie. He is choosing to be like Papa God. To do his Papa’s will. Therefore, we are a branch off of Jesus. John 15: 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches, he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing. So we are brought to Papa God threw Jesus. It’s not enough just to know what Gods about. We have to know who Jesus is to. Not just know but have a well developed relationship with him. He came here and was tempted just like we are everyday. Yet he choose the to sign Papa Gods retirement plan. He knows Papa Gods business plan threw and threw. Knows what the company does and offers. So he went out and promoted the family business plan and offered people jobs and offered them the work for Papa God and get the long term retirement plan like he did. He shows us how to get it. Where to sign up. However, we have to choose which company we want to work for. Do we want to retire and work for Papa of lies or the Papa of truth. The decision is ours. We were given free will and brains to think for ourselves.

So back to the lesson here at hand. In verse 10 Jesus told satan “ahhhh no hit the pavement dude and leave. It’s written in the contract and company I work for that I should only work for papa God, and that’s the only person I can work for, I choose that contract. No get outta my face.”

How did satan react to this? What did he do when Jesus said this to him? He had no choice but to leave. Let’s look at Matthew verse 4:11.

Verse 11 Then the leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

So Satan packed up camp and walked off. Was he angry. Well have you ever told a salesman ahh no. I’m going to another store where I can get better benefits and more for my money? Just saying think about it. He was angry but if he wasn’t going to buy then he’d have to walk around and look for someone who would. Yet once he was gone it says that angels came and ministered to Jesus. Hmmmm. What does that mean? The word ministered. Again you remember you may think you know what someone said or a clue but no absolutely positive. So let’s look it up again. Minster is defined as “person in of a department of state; diplomatic, representative; clergyman; v.t. (verb tense: verb is a word that shows action), supply; serve; contribute; be serviceable or helpful.” What does all that mean do you think? Well let’s have a look shall we.

It says that minister is a person in the department of state; diplomatic; representative; clergyman. So let’s stop there and take a gander if you will. Minster is a person in the department of state. What person? It means the angels. So the angels are in the department of state. Hmmmmm, again what state? Could it be speaking of the state government? What state government are angels apart of? I can tell you the government of the Kingdom of Papa God that’s who. They work are representatives of that state. So next let’s talk about clergyman. What’s a clergyman? Look it up. Clergyman…..So when I looked it up I found the word clergy. Right below it though is the word clerk. Now clerk is defined as clergyman or priest; one who leads responses in the church; an officer in charge of the records; correspondence of of the department or corporation; subordinate, in an office; a salesperson. So stop there. The salesperson. Why would God send the angels to minister to Jesus? Remember the angels are the representatives of Papa Gods company. So they brought the paper work for Jesus to go over, dot the I’s and cross the T’s. I believe that Jesus being in the family business knew all about what job he was given in the family business. He knew where to sign and what the retirement plan consisted of through and through. Yet again it’s your choice of which retirement plan you choose to sign. So Papa God sent some of his own representatives to tie up any loose ends and discuss the plan. Understand?

So today we’ve learned about 2 different long-term retirement plans. Adam the first man choose his retirement plan. We all know what happened to him. Adam suffered permanent death. He accepted and signed satans retirement plan when he took the temptation and took a big bite out of it. Oh yea, it’s in the bible. The guide. In Genesis. For those who are questioning what I am talking about right now. The temptation factor is a big push with satan. It’s how he gets people to choose his plan. However, Jesus came and took a look at satans plan. He didn’t choose it why? HE KNEW PAPA GODS LONG-TERM RETIREMENT PLAN. He knew Papa God and the ministers (angels). He talked to them a lot. Went over all the paper work. He had gained all the wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of what Papa Gods company was and what it’s requirement were. He spoke with Papa God. He knew him on a personal level. How many of you can say you know the owner of the business you work for on a personal basis because he’s your papa? Think about it people. Before you sign anything or join anything you read it threw and threw. Don’t go in blind. You wouldn’t just sign any paper if a man knocked on your door and said “Hello, I am here to have you sign this paper. Were here to fix some repairs on your house. Hurry and sign so we can get started.” Absolutely, not! You would want to know what it’s going to cost you. How will they repair the things. With Satan his long-term retirement plan ends in Hell. Is he going to come out and tell you. No he knows you wouldn’t sign up and work for him. So he tries to lure you in and entice you. Do the research people. Read the bible. Study the word. The word is Jesus. He shows you how to know what the temptation factor is. He shows you what the 2 long-term retirement plans are. You just have to go find the blue prints he left behind. How? Ask him. Which a whole nother can worms. Just remember Jesus came and conquered this world. Through him and by his examples we can to. Know the word of God. Know the truth. Take in the knowledge before you sign anything. Understand what the knowledge is telling you and use your wisdom to apply it. Meaning do the research to gain understanding, then use wisdom to know which plan is best. Who’s long-term retirement plan are you going sign? Think about it.
