The secret of the Christian Life

There are some things i disagree with Gene Edwards on. However I think this article is a good one. It is taken from one of his books.

THE SECRET OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE
By: Gene Edwards

What have you been told is the secret to the Christian life? Pray and read your Bible? Go to church? Witness? Speak in tongues? Tithe?

Let me go on record. I do not believe anything on that list even comes close to the issue of how to live the Christian life. All have one inherent flaw. The fatal flaw? Every item on the aforementioned list assumes that it is possible to live the Christian life. Can you live the Christian life? The answer is no, a resounding NO! You cannot live the Christian life.

That list takes for granted you can live the Christian life. Also note that you are the center of every item on that list. Call it “you-centeredness.” You out there living the Christian life. You cannot live the Christian life. Jesus Christ could not live the Christian life. None of us can live the Christian life! If Jesus Christ cannot live the Christian life, what makes you think that you can? You can give up trying to live the Christian life! We can all testify what a colossal failure we have been at trying to live the Christian life.

God the Father lives the Christian life. “How does God the Father live the Christian life?” He doesn’t. He is the Christian life. He is the highest life. God the Father is the wellspring, the source, the first motion, and the fountainhead of the Christian life.

The Father indwelt His Son here on this earth for thirty-three years. The Father lived the Christian life inside Jesus Christ. It was the Father’s life, and the Father’s life alone, which lived the Christian life inside your Lord. It is the Father’s life, and the Father’s life alone, that ever lives the Christian life. It is the Father’s life, and Father’s life alone, which will live the Christian life in you. Embrace a formula or a list in order to “live the Christian life,” and you are doomed to frustration.

But on the day you quit trying to live the Christian life …then you will finally give Him the freeway to live out in you what is so easy and so simple and so organic for Him to do. Hopefully, you just got set free from a long list of do’s and don’ts (the “do’s” you can’t do, and the “don’ts” you always do). Why look so shocked; stop and think about it. You never were any good at living the Christian life. Admit it.

  1. Gene Edwards is a very good story-teller, and has written some popular books, but like everything that is not Scripture, we should “test all things”. We need to make sure that we don’t swallow false understandings of God just because a writer can weave a skillful story.

Gene Edwards wrote a book years ago called “The Early Church”, but the practical conclusion was very unsatisfying. It was like, “you can’t do anything to bring this about, first of all you need to find an apostle, and that probably won’t happen”. Very similar to the ideas of passivity being promoted by Tropical_Guy.

I read on some church planting forums something which gave me further insight into Gene Edwards and his followers. Apparently he thinks HE is an apostle and that he and his followers are uniquely anointed to restore the church. His followers use language that implies that all the labours of others are really in vain, because what they can be involved in establishing could never be “a real church” – not like what God would establish through them and their elite company.

His articles sound SOoooo spiritual but really, as Anurekha has pointed out, they are full of confusion and contradiction. And they contain flat out contradictions of the teaching of Jesus. There is perhaps an element of truth – that being that we cannot depend on ourselves – but the whole thing is theologically so imprecise that it actually becomes unhelpful.

Don’t be taken in by people who posture as enlightened gurus – Christian or otherwise – as they confuse you with their words to mess up your mind. A similar technique is used in Zen Buddhism with the nonsensical “koans” which don’t make sense – but at the back of it is always the idea that the author has achieved “enlightenment” while “you” are a dummy. Its an old trick of deceivers.

  2. Why you think you agree with this article of Gene Edwards? The whole article is confusion in itself. Firstly the writer does not know the meaning of Christian Life then how can he tell the secrets of Christian Life? His list of secret Christian life is incomplete. Tell me why it is impossible to live a Christian life. If there is no Christian life then from where does this word itself came from? I don’t see that by following the above list the writer had mentioned is person self-centeredness, if it is self-centered then what is God-centered? How can you say that Jesus Christ did not live a Christian life? If Christ is not Christian from where does Christian come from? How is God the Father different from Son the Jesus Christ? Are they not one? In your previous blog you wrote about union with God, where had it perished here? More over this phrase “God the Father lives the Christian life. “How does God the Father live the Christian life?” He doesn’t. He is the Christian life. He is the highest life. God the Father is the wellspring, the source, the first motion, and the fountainhead of the Christian life.” has no definite meaning. If no one lives the Christian life, that means God the Father does not care for his world as everything is limited to himself with He being the fountainhead and the only follower of Christian Life too. Also how will the Father’s life live the Christian life in me? Where is Christ in me or within me if God the Father and His Son are not one? If they are different then what about your other blogs where you emphasize on ‘Christ in us’.
