The End Times Kingdom of the Devil In Our World Today

Survival in these end times requires careful observation and awareness of what is going on in the world. Things are changing so rapidly that those who do not pay attention to those changes risk succumbing to them. One way the Lord protects his children, especially in these last times, is through visions.

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams” (Acts 2:17 NIV).

These visions can take many forms. I have shared here (My End Times Vision ) one such vision I received from the Lord, and now wish to share another. As I pondered what it was the Lord was showing me, I was directed to similar insights given many years ago to a sister in the Lord, Basilea Schlink, as she wrote in her small and excellent book, When the Heavens Opened. As I listened to what the Lord was speaking to me recently, I found myself re-reading Basilea’s book and realizing that the Lord was confirming many things written there. I will make frequent references to that book here. I was very glad for the confirmation which the Lord gave me through her words, which validated my understanding of what the Lord was showing me.

The overall topic here has to do with kingdoms, Satan’s and God’s, and how we are witnessing in our world today the increasingly rapid establishment of Satan’s kingdom in this world in these last days (see also Clash of Kingdoms ). This setting up of that dark kingdom is very disturbing and troubling to God’s people, and what is written here is meant as reassurance that this is all in accord with God’s great Plan, and that he is still in control, even though he has given a short time for the enemy to rule (Dan. 11:39, Rev. 13:7).

To this end, I begin with three direct quotations from Basilea Schlink’s excellent book that echo the same thoughts and purposes which are mine:

“The moment has come for the unfolding of the end-times visions.

“The Lord opened my eyes to see the significance of the final conflict between light and darkness, the battle between the two kingdoms and the two armies in the end times.

“This book is meant to shed light upon that which is of importance for us in the times we are living in. The great prophecy that John received for the end times [Revelation] is now beginning to be fulfilled in our generation. Therefore, this book is intended to offer comfort and strength in this satanic age of horrors and afflictions.”

As was her intention with what was written in her book, so the same purpose is intended here: to offer comfort and strength in this satanic age of horrors and afflictions. And in case some doubt that our own age is indeed correctly deemed satanic, all one has to do is look around at our world. Though each age in fabric of history has had its own evil threads, now the entire tapestry is nearly finished and the overall picture is becoming clear. And that picture is one of horrible evil and heading towards the ultimate culmination of evil in this world.

Basilea saw this finalization as well, for she said, “This earth is becoming more and more like hell,” and, “You are living in a satanic world.” This same conclusion is reached by anyone with their spiritual eyes opened in Christ and should not surprise them. For Scripture itself says that “the whole world is under the control of the evil one” (1 Jn. 5:19 NIV), and, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers” (2 Cor. 4:4 NIV).

But the mind of the believer is not blinded but clear and able to perceive what is going on in this world, for “We have the mind of Christ” (1 Cor. 2:16).

“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ” (2 Cor. 4:6 NIV).

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” (Eph. 5:8 NIV).

“You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled” (1 Th. 5:5 NIV).

Notice that this last Scripture passage enjoins us not to be ignorant of what is going on in the world, but to be alert, not like others, those who are asleep. We are to be aware and alert; we should know what is going on. And what is going on is that the enemy of God, Satan, is working furiously to create his own kingdom in opposition to the kingdom of God, and this world is the battleground and place where he will establish that kingdom. Some examples of this effort are found in the rise of Naziism in World War Two and communism. Basilea Schlink, a German, lived in the time period when these ideologies arose, and this is what she said about such worldviews:

“Satan is offering man the antichristian ideology of his kingdom and its corresponding ethics. To this end, he uses his vassals, many of whom are influential figures in the sphere of politics, high finance and religion. According to the ideology they present, the concept of a world community transcends all ethical values. The individual is required to sacrifice his private and personal views and goals–and this included his religious convictions–in favour of those laid down by a universal society that is characterized by an antichristian spirit.”

Many people think these movements of Naziism and communism are past and no longer pose a threat. Such a viewpoint is blind and dangerous. Those nations which today are seeking the obliteration of Israel have openly spoken in admiration of the Nazi worldview; other one-world agendas are growing as well, and such anti-Christian movements and governments are increasingly gaining momentum and strength. Again, the words of Basilea:
“God is giving Satan the opportunity to emerge from the secrecy of his activities. God is allowing Satan to reveal his true nature and to show what it will be like when he sets up his world kingdom and rules the nations. Even now we can see the initial stage, because his representatives, whom he has empowered, are already coming to the fore and ruling nations.”

“Men still ridicule the ‘dead God’, thinking that they are the rulers of the world.”

It is all about power and who will rule over the minds and souls of human beings and this world. It has always been about this. For even in the beginning, in the Garden of Eden, the devil sought to take over as ruler by causing Eve to doubt the right of God the Creator to rule over them. That was the beginning, the first act in the devil’s broad plan to rule this world. Now, after thousands of years, we approach the end, the last stage in his grand plan, when Satan himself will reach the ultimate culmination of this age-old plan and declare himself the final ruler of this world.

“He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God” (2 Th. 2:3 NIV).

Thus will Satan think of himself as the first and the last, that is, God himself, and seek to prove his assertion by declaring himself to be the last and final ruler of the world. But though he will be allowed by God to go this far, he will not be allowed to stay. Basilea explains it well:

“Jesus will be the Last, that is, the final Victor. In the end times, however, it appears more and more as though Satan, and not Jesus, is ‘the last’, the victor, who will take everything into his hands, establish his rule and in the end create a new world.

“But one statement stands immovable like solid rock. No one can obliterate it. . . . It is the words of Jesus, ‘I am the Last!’ . . . With his words . . . Jesus is invalidating . . . the innumerable speeches and writings that are directed against him today. Influential people on the political and religious scene and international, anti-Christian organizations appear to govern the world more and more . . . by the opinions they put forth. They can say and write whatever they please, yes, exert control over everything . . . but Jesus, and not they, will remain the First and the Last, even if they proclaim their supremacy a thousand times over. For it is not Satan and those who belong to him–the Antichrist and his predecessors–who created the world as ‘the first’. This Jesus did. . . . Satan and his vassals are but created beings; moreover, they stand under the curse of sin. Consequently, they have no power whatsoever to speak the last word to mankind and to establish the final dominion. How ludicrous is such an endeavor!

“The final Victor in this terrible epoch will be Jesus [who declares] . . . ‘I am the Last.’ Indeed, he is the Last, the End of all, who will remain when all else has fallen, and his dominion will also remain, for it is an everlasting dominion (Daniel 7:14).”

Therefore, as we see the world more and more come under the domination of those who reject Jesus and wish to rule the world for themselves, we should not be surprised. We have been forewarned that this would be (Mt. 24:25). Rather, we should not be deceived that just because those espousing such human lordship over all mankind come to power means that they are the true rulers. This world belongs to the One who created it, and to him alone belongs the right to rule over it. For God says:

“A ruin! A ruin! I will make it a ruin! It will not be restored until he comes to whom it rightfully belongs; to him I will give it” (Ezekiel 21:27 NIV).

Jesus is the one to whom this world rightly belongs–and he is coming soon to assume his rightful lordship over this world! “Behold, I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book” (Rev. 22:7 NIV).

Satan was not the first, nor will he be the last. Jesus is the first and the last.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Rev. 22:13 NIV).

Let us be ready for this coming, to meet the One who is the First and the Last. Let us heed the words which he himself spoke:

“Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back–whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!'” (Mark 13:35-37 NIV).
