The Best Goal for a Christian – is it YOUR goal?

If you read motivational books, no doubt you have heard of the importance of setting goals. Without setting goals we tend to drift and we don’t achieve great results. Without strong goals all we tend to do is “get by”.

Some motivational books encourage us to choose any goal we like. Could be a large house in a good neighborhood paid off, or a certain kind of car, or holiday. It might be a career achievement. The books then go on to give you some principles through which you can achieve your stated goals.

I have a problem with this because it is true concerning all truly born again Christians that we are “not our own”. We belong to God. Therefore, in going after goals, we must be sure they are the ones pleasing the LORD.

God tells us that might, riches, wisdom and strength are nothing in his eyes compared to “knowing Him”. That is, to know God personally.

Jer 9:23 Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;
Jer 9:24 But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the LORD.

To what extent can we say we reliably know and obey the voice of God (however it may come to us)?

I have known Christians who could identify the diseases present in a small group of people, which God wanted to heal. I have known Christians who could tell me what was going on in my life and where it was going in the short as well as the long term. AT TIMES I have received grace to do this for others as well. What I have experienced has led me to believe that KNOWING GOD to a significant degree is a very possible, if fairly rare, attainment. We should go after it.

I know a man in Christ who has received the designs of amazing inventions from the Lord. I have known people who when you just get physically near to them you experience a heightened sense of the LORD’s presence. There are people today who can weep all night for lost souls. Only God knows the true eternal impact of such people.

There is infinite variety in the ways we could know God, since God is infinitely rich in character and there is an infinite amount about God to know. We should never think the quest to know God would be boring. Difficult at times, yes – boring, no.

Looking at the example of Jesus Himself, and also the apostle Paul confirms that this was their core motivation – to truly know God. It stands to reason that God is better than anything He has created – including people, wisdom, knowledge, pleasure, sex …

Jesus talked all the time about His relationship with the Father. That was the relationship which strengthened Him in His entire earthly ministry. The Father was the ultimate value for Jesus.

Paul said that all the pedigree he had as a religious man, and whatever else he may have lost, was all dung compared to the surpassing value of knowing Christ.

Are you in touch with that truth or is it just a bland idea to you? The blind man who cannot see, does not have a basis to understand what He is missing out on. So many times, we don’t understand either.

Therefore, embrace the wisdom to make TRULY knowing God and His voice your highest priority.

That will mean obeying God, even through suffering. But the pleasure of knowing God is greater by far than the pain of dealing with the flesh. And refusing to know God to whatever degree has a very high cost, at least in the future if not as much in the present.

Fasting and humbling oneself to wait and listen, and then obey, are key elements in this process.

I believe we also need to take note of what God is showing us, and showing us to do, so that we don’t grieve the Spirit of God away. We need to treasure all that God reveals.

A word to the wise is sufficient. Pray that I might really reinforce THIS as my foremost goal also, at all levels of my being.
