The Afghanistan Problem – A Christian Perspective

Afghanistan has been in the news a lot for the last 10 years. Since the attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11, this has especially been true, because the leaders of the United States decided that attacking and occupying Afghanistan was the appropriate response to the events of that day.

Since that time, there has been a military occupation of Afghanistan by western military powers. Opposing this miltary occupation we have the Taleban, who are a local islamic military power. They have been conducting a guerilla warfare against the western forces. Now it is well known, or should be, that the more time passes, the harder it becomes for an occupying army to stand against guerilla warfare. Eventually the occupying powers run out of money and resources. As long as the guerillas have substantial support from the local population, they are destined to remain a thorn in the side of the occupiers until the occupier run out of resources of political willpower to continue. It is therefore quite possible that the whole military enterprise in Afghanistan will ultimately collapse, and the consequences of this might be very bad indeed for the world.

This war has been conducted in the name of a “war on terror”. This war is another example of the USA waging war on an abstract noun. A lot of Christian people have supported the basic premise of this war. But perhaps this support has been somewhat misguided. For this reason, I would like to present a different agenda for solving the kind of problem we are seeing at work here.

In this article I am NOT going to explore the issue of whether the events of 9-11 were really due primarily to the conspiratorial activities of Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda and Saudi islamic fundamentalists, or whether other powers were involved in conspiratorial activity. There has been a lot written on this subject on the internet already. But whichever way you look at it, there are a lot of muslims who hate America and would love to see the nation either destroyed or subverted and turned into an islamic republic. There are plenty of muslims out there who want to fight back and bring America down, and will use methods we would call “terror” to achieve their goals. After all the Qu’ran does command muslims to fight the infidels. And for muslims, everyone who is not a muslim is an infidel. In the muslim mind, any cessation of hostilities with infidels is only to give the muslim warriors time to strengthen and gain a strategic advantage. And if any muslim wants to deny this, remember that the Qu’ran also allows a muslim to LIE to an infidel in order to gain a strategic advantage also. You cannot trust what muslims tell you.

The strategy of the United States and its allies seems to be to beat the hostile elements of the population into submission. This is really hard to do with guns and bombs though, because serious muslims are not afraid to die for their cause. Unless western powers want to commit serious genocide on the people of Afghanistan, they will never convince the people to renounce islamic militarism (“jihad”) by asserting themselves as an occupying army. This is because muslims are not exactly like westerners, who in general value individual freedom and life very highly. For muslims, it is more about faithfulness to their religion, their family, their tribe, their community. You won’t get them to give up the fight simply because fighting involves personal risk to life and limb. Instead, the more you fight and shoot, the more likely you are to strengthen them in their resolve to conduct “jihad” against the “infidels”.

The apostle Paul said, “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:3,4). Islam is a system of religious and political IDEAS, supported by deceiving spirits. You cannot defeat spirits by killing and maiming bodies. In some situations you may be able to stop them taking over your country by force, as happened in Spain many centuries ago, but you cannot defeat Islam by means of guns and tanks.

I don’t know whether Islam will be substantially defeated before the return of Jesus Christ or not, but theoretically it is POSSIBLE for it to be defeated by the correct application of the spiritual weapons God has given to Christians. Let worldly politicians and military commanders do what they will. It is actually obedient praying Christians who are the most influential people for good in world affairs today. But how much effective prayer are Christians offering right now concerning these matters? Only God knows that. But there is definitely scope for improvement.

If Islam is the truth then we would all do well to submit to it. But if Islam is a lie from hell, it needs to be utterly discredited. The way to do this is through PRAYER, through LOVE but most of all through PUBLISHING THE TRUTH about Islam. Fundamentalist muslims CANNOT BEAR the truth about Islam to be known to the world, and they have been known to take legal action against those who do so. That is because Islam cannot stand proper scrutiny. It cannot stand in the light, because it is a form of darkness that can only prosper in the midst of religious ignorance. It only survives through intimidation and through the multiplication of muslim children.

As Christians, if we really want to make a difference, we need to bring down the lies of Islam. There are some good websites which do this. People like Zakaria Boutros do a great job exposing all the evil in the Qu’ran and especially the Hadith. We need to pray for such ministries.

Muslims will possibly cry foul here, and demand to be respected, but where is the respect for Christianity in Saudi Arabia, the cradle of Islam? There is no even-handedness in the muslim position. It is all one-sided. In Pakistan, all you have to do is BE ACCUSED of speaking against Mohammed and you may go to jail or lose your life. In islamic law, if a muslim forsakes his religion and converts, islam instructs people in the family of that person to KILL THEM. These are simply tactics of INTIMIDATION. If Islam were true, it wouldn’t need to use such tactics to prosper.

In spite of all these things, the resurrected Jesus Christ is appearing to thousands of muslims around the world, and they are forsaking the religion of their birth to follow Jesus. We as Christians should not expect the LORD Jesus Christ to do all the work here. We have a part to play in prayer, and in publishing the truth. Exposing evil disempowers it. Many nominal muslims are lovely people, as people go, and they are not in favor of the things the Qu’ran actually teaches them to do. Our job as Christians is actually to tear down the mental and spiritual strongholds which keep people IN THEIR SINS, in an UNFORGIVEN STATE, in a state of REJECTING THE ONLY SAVIOR OF THE WORLD – JESUS CHRIST.

In my view, foolish crusades with bombs and tanks to overcome something spiritual in nature will ultimately be counter productive to the interests of freedom and peace everywhere. If leaders of western nations were SERIOUS about stopping the menace of fundamental Islam, they need to stop being “politically correct” and start facing up to the reality of what the Qu’ran and Hadeeth actually teach the muslim people to BELIEVE and DO. However, the leaders of western nations are not serious, they are deceived, they are deceivers themselves, and unless significant PRAYER is offered up they will continue to play into the hands of the jihadists. It is actually up to a handful of God’s true SPIRITUAL warriors to take a stand and stop the devil from taking the souls of people everywhere unopposed in a wholesale fashion.

To do this, all we need to do is devote our time, energy, resources and lives to what Jesus Christ COMMANDED us to do – that is, to pray without ceasing, obey the gospel and make DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS.

  1. I agree with the prayer aspect for sure!! On the issue of “winning” this war; I’m not exactly sure how you would define victory in a situation like this. The current government itself would have to be replaced, and it would have have to start at the ground up, kind of like Iraq. Or, we could make it our 51st state!
