Foreboding tremors of war are being felt with increasing frequency and intensity in this world. The war in the unseen realm is once again about to spill over into the physical world. But who is paying attention? It is reminiscent of the days before WW2, in the late 1930s, when those with perception picked up on the signs that warned them of the war that would soon reach them and the whole world, while others went about their lives largely unconcerned, only to find themselves unprepared when that war engulfed the entire planet. We should learn from this example from history.

A common objection raised against the existence of God is the existence of evil: How can there be a God since evil exists? Or if there is a God, then does not the existence of evil show that he himself must be cruel or evil? Both of these questions actually derive from a more basic question yet: Is existence itself good or bad? This is not an idle question, nor is it solely a matter for theologians. It has very practical and personal implications.

ONE: We can hide him or proclaim him.

Jesus himself said that those who believe in him are to go out into the whole world and proclaim him as its Savior (Mt. 28:19,20). He is the good news that this dark world needs so desperately to hear.

Can We Trust Holy Books?

Unless we have good reasons, we should not totally trust any of the major Scriptures of the world’s religions. The simple reason for this is that they contradict each other. Some of them contradict themselves quite seriously!

The Qu’ran recommends the prophetic writings which came before it, but it is doubtful if Mohammed ever read them himself. According to the Hadeeth, on one occasion where the Torah was brought to him he didn’t even want to look at it.

Is there a foundation for ethics in a world without God?

Definitions: by God here I mean an eternally existing,
sovereign, Personal Being who created all things, and who is the ultimate
lawgiver and judge of all things.

By ethics I mean a system of ideas concerned with
defining what is morally “right” and “wrong”. Alternatively, ethics is
concerned with what we “should” or “should not” do.

The question of ethics is important to everyone, because we all live
in a world where we are vulnerable to pain. The actions of others have
the potential to bring us satisfaction, or they can hurt us.

Suffering as a Believer

Christian believers are not immune from suffering. In fact, sometimes
it seems that sincere Christian believers suffer more than others! God
has promised us many things, but He has not promised us immunity from suffering
in this life. “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord
delivers him out of them all.” (Psalm 34:19).

Suffering is real. How can we make sense of it? What can we learn from
it? Can we overcome it?

People have different ideas about what is wrong with our world. Obviously
economic injustice, political factors, racism, religious hatred and greed
are factors in the existence of suffering. But they are not the only ones.
They all point to a far more insidious source – one which is in fact not
at all far from our human hearts.

Suffering and pain tell us that something is wrong.
