If you search the internet for Christian views on spirituality, you will find a lot of controversy regarding certain doctrines and well-known T.V. preachers. Its really amazing that so many who profess to love God’s Word, the Bible, to love Jesus, to be in touch with the Spirit of Truth can have such major disagreements on so many issues and people. Somewhere someone is getting deceived. And if you think that only YOU cannot be deceived, you are already deceived. Jesus said, “Take heed that no one deceives you.” (Matthew 24:4).
I refer to the exhortation given here concerning the scandal with Ted Haggard.
By all means let us pray for spiritual leaders, but let us also pray that the Lord will empower our Christian leaders with the gift of discernment of spirits and the boldness to use it in love, so that a lot of these problems can be avoided before they blow up into big things that unsettle the faith of baby Christians.
We also need to make sure our reasons for believing are more to do with Jesus Christ himself than with his
God has always worked through leaders in the lives of his people. From the beginning, as soon as God had a people, he raised up leaders amongst them through whom His redemptive purposes were accomplished. We had Joseph, Moses, Samson, David, Solomon, the Kings of Israel, the prophets and the priests. Jesus Christ came as a priest in the order of Melchizedek. He came as Prophet, Priest and King – the ultimate anointed one.
In the Old Testament only some people were anointed by the Holy Spirit. Prophets, priests and Kings were all specially anointed by God.
Yes, folks, it has come to this, that our Sovereign God has seen fit to use a homosexual prostitute to help bring discernment and truth to His own church. And He has done it in the most public way.
This is actually the mercy of God. Without this kind of exposure it is questionable whether the church would have ever had the courage to deal with such issues. For we all know, that to VOLUNTEER such information generally spells death to our religious careers, the financial and lifestyle benefits we enjoy as “senior servants of God”.
Update July 2009: It seems that Ted Haggard has repented of his sin. Please visit
this insightful interview by Lee Grady. One person I really admire in this is Ted’s wife Gayle who has stood by him and behaved like a real Christian woman.

The Word of God does teach that the Lord delights in the prosperity of His servant (Psalm 35:27). But it also teaches that “whoever has this world’s goods and sees his brother having need, and shuts up his bowels from him, how does the love of God dwell in him?” (1 John 3:17).
