Scriptures for women, parenting and children

Dear friends in Christ,

I have decided to make a list of different Scriptures that speak about how a woman should be and what she is supposed to do in life, so that I can start to pray often that these things become part of my life, and thus to become the woman that God wants me to be.

We cannot rely on the world to give us the correct image on what a woman should be like and there is a lot of confusion in the church as well over the role of women, so I have decided I will go to the Word and look for the things the Word says I should be and do.

I have intentionally left out the Scriptures that are very hard to understand, because there is much debate about what they really mean and I have focused on the Scriptures that we can understand and therefore we are much more responsible to obey! As someone once said: It is not the Scriptures that I do not understand that bother me, but those I do understand! (that’s because they can bring conviction and they demand our total obedience).

I suggest you read them to understand more about what the will of God for you as a woman is and then I encourage you to turn these commands into prayers for yourself. If it says: ‘Wives, submits to your husbands, as unto the Lord’ I would then turn it into a prayer like this: Father God, help me to submit to my husband in all things, give me grace for this and a humble heart of submission, in Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen’ This is just an example of course, you can pray with your own words, but based on the Scripture. It is basically an exercise to turn the Scripture into a prayer.

There is a section for parenting, where you can pray that God will make you the kind of parent that He shows in the Word that you should be, and turn every Scripture into a prayer for yourself.

The last section is the actual commands of God to children. These you can turn them into prayers for your children and/or you can print them out and give them to your children to read, meditate on them and teach them as well to turn them each into a prayer. This will teach them a good habit of praying based on Scripture which could be extended to the whole Bible and remain with them as an excellent habit for life.

Please feel free to share this link or print the Scriptures and distribute them to friends, etc.

I would not call this a complete list of Scriptures regarding women, but I tried to focus on the main important ones from the Bible, since there are many more other Scriptures that could be applied to our life as a wife, mother, housewife. Feel free to post at the end of this article any other Scriptures you consider important that I may have missed, as I said this is not a complete list, but hopefully a useful one to some people.

SCRIPTURES REGARDING WOMEN

Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth. As a loving deer and a graceful doe, let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and always be enraptured with her love. Proverbs 5:18-19

A foolish woman is clamorous; she is simple, and knows nothing. Proverbs 9:13

A gracious woman retains honor, but ruthless men retain riches. Proverbs 11:16

An excellent (literally a wife of valor) wife is the crown of her husband, but she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones. Proverbs 12:4

The wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands. Proverbs 14:1

He who finds a wife finds a good thing,and obtains favor from the LORD. Proverbs 18:22

A foolish son is the ruin of his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping. Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD. Proverbs 19:13-14

Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, than in a house shared with a contentious woman. Proverbs 21:9

Better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and angry woman. Proverbs 21:19
It is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, than in a house shared with a contentious woman. Proverbs 25:24

Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. Proverbs 24:3-4

A continual dripping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike; whoever restrains her restrains the wind, and grasps oil with his right hand. Proverbs 27:15-16

Who can find a virtuous wife?
      For her worth is far above rubies.
       11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her;
      So he will have no lack of gain.
       12 She does him good and not evil
      All the days of her life.
       13 She seeks wool and flax,
      And willingly works with her hands.
       14 She is like the merchant ships,
      She brings her food from afar.
       15 She also rises while it is yet night,
      And provides food for her household,
      And a portion for her maidservants.
       16 She considers a field and buys it;
      From her profits she plants a vineyard.
       17 She girds herself with strength,
      And strengthens her arms.
       18 She perceives that her merchandise is good,
      And her lamp does not go out by night.
       19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
      And her hand holds the spindle.
       20 She extends her hand to the poor,
      Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.
       21 She is not afraid of snow for her household,
      For all her household is clothed with scarlet.
       22 She makes tapestry for herself;
      Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
       23 Her husband is known in the gates,
      When he sits among the elders of the land.
       24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
      And supplies sashes for the merchants.
       25 Strength and honor are her clothing;
      She shall rejoice in time to come.
       26 She opens her mouth with wisdom,
      And on her tongue is the law of kindness.
       27 She watches over the ways of her household,
      And does not eat the bread of idleness.
       28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;
      Her husband also, and he praises her:
       29 “ Many daughters have done well,
      But you excel them all.”
       30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
      But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
       31 Give her of the fruit of her hands,
      And let her own works praise her in the gates.
Proverbs 31:10-31

Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment.
1 Corinthians 7:3-6

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Ephesians 5:22-24, 33

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Colossians 3:18

In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
1 Timothy 2:9-15

Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 1 Timothy 3:11

She has been the wife of one man, well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.
1 Timothy 5:9-10

the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. Titus 2:3-5

Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear. Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.
1 Peter 3:1-7

And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. – James 3:18

These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:6-9

Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.

Proverbs 22:24-25 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.

Psalms 127:3-5 Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

1 Thessalonians 2:7 but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children.

Proverbs 14:26 He who fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge.

Matthew 18:12-14 “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.”
