Where is the wise man (the philosopher)? Where is the scribe (the scholar)? Where is the investigator (the logician, the debater) of this present time and age? Has not God shown the nonsense and the folly of this world’s wisdom? 1 Corinthians 1:20 AMP
How does God make nonsense of this world’s wisdom? Let’s explore some ways that it seems to work. First, let’s talk about being what some would call “super spiritual.” Such people excel in the gifts of the Spirit. Their entire Christian experience is taken up with them. Many of them seem to seek the gifts and ignore the giver, Jesus Christ.
Others memorize scriptures to the point that they seldom hold a meaningful conversation. I’ve met a few of them. You speak to them and get endless strings of scriptures in return.
And then there are the doctrinal ones. Their lives are taken up by expounding upon the word of God and they are always right. Don’t take any exception to the truths that they possess, because they have found it all and cling to it as their totality of knowing the Lord.
So, I would like to take the liberty here and describe how God confounds the wise of this world. I think it comes from meditating on scriptures toward which the Holy Spirit directs one’s attention. For example, today the Lord reminded me of the two scriptures in 1 John that says, “God is Love.” Then I directed me to lay low and download into my mind the meaning and ramifications of that truth in my life.
