John Hagee says Jesus did not come to be the Messiah

John Hagee pastors a very large church. He goes on TV a lot. I understand he divorced and remarried a long time ago. Whether that disqualifies him from being bishop or an overseer over God’s people – you judge.

1Ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

I really question whether a man who can even slightly suggest that Jesus did not come as Messiah to the Jews can be considered “apt to teach”. Someone apt to teach is someone who has the ability to communicate God’s TRUTH unambiguously.

You can see from the youtube promo that he is now selling a book in which he claims that Jesus did not come to be the Messiah of the Jews. I would advise you to save your money and not buy the book.

UPDATE: It seems that John Hagee has published something of a retraction, and is going to rewrite a chapter of his book. That sounds like a good start. See here
for example.

Here are some comments from Rick Joyner on the issue and some comments on the comments.

To me serious questions have to be raised about the man’s discernment, if he can write and promote books which need to be partially retracted due to their promotion of SERIOUS doctrinal errors.

1Jo 2:22 Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.

I have always understood Christ to be a based on greek word (Christus) for the Hebrew concept of Messiah (Maschiach). Jesus is called the son of David and never denies it. Jesus had the legal right (through Joseph, his adopted father) to the Davidic throne. This can be seen in Matthew’s gospel, chapter 1.

Jesus said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the House of Israel” – meaning that his earthly ministry had God-appointed boundaries. “He came unto his own, but his own received him not” (John 1:11). Some of the parables of Jesus and much of the gospel of John show that the Jews by and large DID reject Jesus. They were a fickly bunch and stirred up by the chief priests, demanded before Pilate that Jesus by crucified. On the day of Pentecost, Peter rebuked his Jewish hearers, telling them:

Act 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

Hagee seems to want to say we can’t blame the Jews for anything, they did no wrong in relation to Jesus, he never came as the Messiah, so we should totally support the state of Israel. It is reported that Hagee also believes that Jews don’t need to believe in Jesus to be saved – they have their own covenant with God. There are a lot of dangers in this dual covenant theology. Listen, Paul was a Jew, Peter was a Jew, the 12 apostles and the first church were all Jews. Did they have no need of Jesus, having their own special Jewish covenant?? A thousand times NO. The whole point was, they responded to God’s call, taking an unpopular way which was at variance to the consensus of their nation, and THIS proved that God in fact had chosen them for eternal salvation. Eternal salvation has NOTHING to do with being an earthly Jew. It has everything to do with having the circumcision OF THE HEART, and having the same kind of faith in God as ABRAHAM, who believed that God had the power to provide a sacrifice and even raise his son from the dead.

Its pretty extreme that such a one can actually sell books for profit peddling these kind of statements that contradict the Scriptures.

Don’t believe in people just because they can buy T.V. time or can sell books. Check things out for yourself according to God’s Word. Don’t follow men. And remember, in the last days, there is no safety in numbers. Twenty thousand churchgoers can EASILY be wrong.
