Is Justin Bieber a Christian? Does it matter? Well I think it matters to a lot of young girls out there who live in Christian families. And others too. They like Justin, they think he is cute and they like his music. So how cool would it be to know that Justin is a Christian? Well, really cool, right. But what does it all mean?
What Does it Mean to Be A Christian?
There are actually a LOT of different ideas today about what it means to be a Christian. According to some of those ideas, Justin Bieber definitely IS a Christian. He was raised by a Christian mother. He was baptized. He went to church regularly until he became famous. What else? Well, to his credit, Justin Bieber has actually taken a public stand against abortion. That takes some courage when the spotlight is on you. A lot of politicians today wouldn’t be willing to take such a stand, and a lot of church people stay quiet on the issue. So again, we have to give credit where credit is due.
Justin Bieber also has some true ideas about Jesus and the cross. The Christian Post website writes: “Bieber has expressed on numerous occasions his faith in Jesus Christ. “I am spiritual. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins. …”
Its important to believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. All Christians believe that. Its also important to be willing to recognize that you do sin. Bieber does that here. But is that all it takes to be a Christian? What is a Christian, anyway?
In one sense, society will mostly accept that you can be a Christian just by saying you are a Christian, or that you believe in Jesus Christ. But have you ever wondered what the word “Christian” actually meant when it was first used?
In Acts 11:26 it says, “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.” What are disciples? Well, disciples are learners, who more or less sit at the feet of a master or teacher. To be a disciple of JESUS is to be a Christian. To be a real Christian you need to be an obedient student who sits at the feet of Jesus, so to speak, and LEARNS. You learn to be, you learn to think, you learn to believe, you learn to DO – according to way Jesus wants you to be, think, believe and do. You learn to love as He loves. You learn to love what He loves, and hate what He hates. And the only way to be able to learn these things is to be willing on a regular basis to say “No” to yourself.
None of us do this perfectly, but I would say this. To really be a disciple of Jesus, you have to be aiming to do it right. Do it according to what Jesus said to do. It would really help to read the words in red in the New Testament. These are the recorded words of Jesus. Jesus said to his disciples after his resurrection, “Go into all the world and MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations, … teaching them to observe ALL THINGS I have COMMANDED you.” (Matthew 28:19,20). The disciples of Jesus are to be taught to OBEY Jesus Christ and His commands. The biggest command is to trust God, to trust in God’s Son Jesus Christ, because that leads to everything else – including loving God and people. But you can’t be trusting in Jesus if you seriously disregard the majority of what Jesus is recorded to have said. After all, those things don’t take all that long to read. Ignorance isn’t really an excuse here. These sayings of Jesus are difficult because they challenge us to lay down our lives and our proud selfish ways. And Jesus did not tone it down. He said, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but he who loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will find it.”
Christianity today has been somewhat perverted by many communicators who want to make it a message about achieving your own dreams. Take a look at this video and this article on this.
The Philosophy of Success – A Very Popular Message Bieber Promotes
We need to study the Bible carefully to realise that it is not primarily a manual for achieving personal success and glory. The seeking of those things above the will of God is exactly what caused Lucifer the archangel to become the devil.
We don’t know what will happen to Justin Bieber in the end. That is between him and God. What we can do is look at the kind of life he is living, the kind of example he is setting, and ask if it makes sense to say that Justin Bieber is following Jesus. Even if he isn’t really following Jesus right now, he might later on, even though Jesus said that it is extremely hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. And Bieber is very rich now. Believe me, I am not jealous of this. I don’t want it to be extremely hard for me to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Neither do I want it to be extremely easy to fall into the kind of sins which God says can keep you out of the Kingdom of Heaven. You can find a list of these sins in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and Galatians 5:19-21, as well as Revelation 21:8.
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)
Your pastor might have told you that sinning like this is no big deal, because God is so forgiving. I tell you this: God forgives those who turn from sin. Those who cling to it, who won’t forsake it, ARE NOT FORGIVEN and never will be unless they give up their sin.
So if you want to be the kind of Christian that is ready to drop into hell at any moment, feel free to keep on sinning. Whether you are “spiritual” or not, whether you are “religious” or not, you could go into eternal hell-fire at any moment, should something horrible like an accident or a public shooting make a victim out of you.
You won’t be SAVED BY GRACE if you don’t repent. Read Hebrew 10:26-31. It teaches Christians to expect HELL if they deliberately keep on sinning. Don’t listen to your pastor’s teaching about salvation if he is telling you the opposite of what Hebrews 10:26-31 teaches, and the opposite of what Jesus taught about eternal judgment in the Sermon on the Mount. Its NOT WORTH IT. You can be cursed eternally if you trust in a compromising religious teacher. It doesn’t matter HOW nicely he smiles.
Having laid that groundwork, lets take some time to examine what Justin Bieber is saying and doing.
Bieber said in an interview reported in January 2012, “A lot of people who are religious, I think they get lost. They go to church just to go to church. I’m not trying to disrespect them … but for me, I focus more on praying and talking to Him. I don’t have to go to church.”
But what does the Bible say? Jesus said, “Love one another as I have loved you.” Jesus spent lots of time with these disciples he said these words to. How can you “love one another” if you don’t want to spend any time with them? Beyond that, the Bible says,
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
This means that if you want to follow Jesus, its not just a matter of talking to God privately – though it DOES include that. You must OBEY God’s will – a part of which is to spend time with other Christians, using your God-given gifts to serve.
Of course, before being trusted as a Christian in a local church, one should first repent of sexual immorality. I wish that would go without saying but it doesn’t seem to any more so I will say it anyway.
It also helps to stay clear of illegal drug use. You can google “Justin Bieber weed” to get an idea of what seems to be going on here.
And remember what Smokey Bear said: “Where there’s smoke, there’s sure to be fire”.
We can go on and on about these kinds of things, and people don’t like it. I get that. But how about a little bit of honesty here? I mean, “Sex and drugs and rock and roll” is not really what Christianity is all about. Or is it? It depends on what kind of Christianity you are following, I guess. And there have been many kinds over the years. There has been a lot of Christianity in history where you go and murder people who disagree with you – like the Roman Catholic Inquisition people murdering the Waldenses – true Bible believing Christians who moved in the power of God. But now we have “sex, drugs and rock-and-roll” Christianity. Its another brand of Christianity, and a very popular one, too.
There was once upon a time this guy who said, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” Who do you think that one was? Do you think he would say the same thing today? Or did he change to get with the times?
Did Jesus Put Justin Bieber where he is?
Bieber went on to say in the same interview I referenced at the beginning of this article: “I believe that he [Jesus] put me in this position, and that I have to always give him the glory he deserves for putting me here,” Bieber said in a 2012 interview. “But I don’t consider myself religious.””
Its so fashionable to be “spiritual” but not “religious”. But if that means, “I don’t go to church, I smoke drugs, I sleep around, I visit brothels, I have wild parties, I promote lust” then it probably is a good thing to be religious. Even the devil is spiritual. And some of his servants do a LOT of nice things for people when they are in the public eye. But it doesn’t make them right with God.
Jesus told his disciples to pray, “Lead us NOT into temptation”. So does it make sense that Jesus Christ put Justin Bieber in a position where “every earthly temptation is put before him”? I say Jesus did not do that. The devil, working through worldly people, did that.
And what a great result for the devil! Now we’ve got so many young people and some older ones too, like popular megachurch pastors saying that Justin Bieber is a Christian. Here is what Judah Smith, pastor of a large church somewhere is reported to have said by the Christian Post: “Justin makes fantastic decisions in his life,” said Smith. “I do my best to encourage him, and he’s a spectacular young man.”
We’ve got all these people thinking you can be a Christian and love the world, be an idol, serve your own lusts and so on. There’s a big market for that, and this is what some people want to capitalize on. But none of this is going to cut it with God. You wonder how people in the Middle Ages could think they were serving God by killing Christians? I tell you how: they were just following their spiritual leaders. Just like people are doing today when the follow their lusts while professing to be Christians. They are just following their spiritual leaders.
If you want to know the truth about this, but you cannot take it from me, please call upon the name of Jesus Christ directly, earnestly, and sincerely, and ask HIM to show you what is really going on. And please don’t be afraid to keep your Bible open while you do this.
