Human Guilt – Divine Mercy – Ps Byron Graham

As we spoke this morning our God is an amazing God because of the mercy that constantly comes from Him.

This morning we looked at the Prophet Isaiah and the generation of God’s people that he had to speak the word of God too. They were a rebellious people that refused to listen to the Word of the Lord and it lead to their destruction.

Isaiah the prophet was a man that faithfully delivered the word of God to his generation and was martyred for the cause of the kingdom of God, they tied him in between two planks of wood and sawed him in half, I guess that as they were cutting through the wood it made the whole process slower and more painful.

Let’s read Isaiah 1: 1-20 and recap.

We looked at the signs of a rebellious people this morning, A. They were INCONSIDERATE V2-3, After all that God had done for his people they turned their back on Him and went in their own direction regardless of the consequences, now to you and I that sounds crazy but that is the nature of the flesh. How many people have you tried to help with the wisdom of the Word of God and they don’t listen?

B. They WILLFULLY REJECTED GOD. V. 4. This was not some misunderstanding or a mistake this was a decision of the will of the people to rebel from God. And it happens today, just put God’s name on it and automatically you will get resistance. It comes at that point of decision before we sin, we know what we are about to do is wrong and in that split second the desire for sin is too strong and we give in to the will of the flesh and we turn our back on God and wilfully reject Him.

C. They were PAST CORRECTION, if you continue to rebel against the Lord there comes a time that you are past correction where the conviction of the Holy Spirit doesn’t affect you anymore. The bible calls it a seared conscience. When you get to that point you begin to justify to yourself the sin in your life and you are deceived.

D. And offcourse that is when CORRUPTION sets in; when the flesh wins over the Spirit the decay begins because only the flesh can decay the Spirit cannot. And the years go by and life gets worse and worse and everything is falling apart around you and you ask yourself the question, “How did I get into this mess?” and the answer is when you chose to rebel.

But the story doesn’t have to end there, the second part of this message is called, DIVINE MRECY, and that is always on the table for those who want to receive it.

But you have to catch the;

It is as if God is taking them by the shoulders and giving them a shake and saying wake up you need to change.

And that is the revelation that the rebel must receive, there must be change, if we continue to go down the same road then we will hit the brick wall at the end of it but if we make a decision to change then we can avert the destruction ahead.

But I have to tell you that if you don’t catch the revelation of this then nothing will change and the inevitable is guaranteed. History records that the people were destroyed and the remainder were taken to Babylon as slaves, only a remnant were left in the desolation.

V. 18. READ IT.

After all they had done God holds out the hand of reconciliation. Come now, let us reason together, as if we have anything to bring to the table, we could well expect if God was standing there with a big stick ready to let us have it, but He is not.

God could have driven out the whole nation as He did drive Adam and Eve out of the garden, but He didn’t. He extended an invitation to them to come back and let’s get it right.

Rom. 5: 20-21 says, “The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

So the invitation is there to all and there is no sin that is too big for the grace of God to cover, the atonement for sin made by Jesus Christ was complete there is nothing else required, except our co-operation.

Are we prepared to do what ever it takes to bring things back into His will for your life? Hebrews 3: 12-15 says, “See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sins deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ till we hold firmly to the end the confidence we had at first. As has just been said; Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”

So the invitation is there for all to grasp hold of, the question is, “Will I let go and let God do what He wants to do in my life?” “Will I turn for good to begin in my life?”

V. 18-19. READ IT.

It is said that any man can dye his soul with sin but only God can bleach it back to white. If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land.

Make no mistake about it when God promises something it comes to pass, but the restoration process is up to us. The provision has been made all we have to do, is to want to apply it to our lives. And the restoration process begins.

1 John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.”

See most people you find are not happy with their lives but they will not take God at His promise and live to the fullness that Jesus died for. They want everything to change but they don’t want to be the ones who do anything about it.

V. 20. READ IT.

The warning here is very clear and you have to understand this is the last resort for God, this is the last thing He wants to do but if we chose to rebel then we sign our own destiny.

The people of Israel received the same warning over and over again from God and sometimes they obeyed and God saved them from their enemies but other times they refused and they were taken out by their enemies into captivity.

Now you would have to look at this and think, why on earth would they refuse when the price was so high? Why would they risk their future and gamble with their destiny?

I ran into the parents of a friend of Shane’s, they grew up together and went to church things, school, all that and I asked about this kid and they told me that he is totally backslidden. And this is a kid who knows it all but his answer to his parents is; “God won’t let me go to hell, He loves me too much.”

But what he doesn’t realise is that God is not sending that boy to hell; he is sending himself there, by his choices. You make the wrong choice, don’t blame God, there would be ample opportunity to repent and turn your life around but he choses not too.

I see this all the time in our society, people blame everybody else for their position in life, my parents, my school teacher, my poor back ground, my employer, yet all the time we are responsible for where we are in life and we need to admit that.

Start taking responsibility for our choices, our actions and grow through it in God and turn it around. Have the back bone to say, “Yes! I made mistakes and now I am going to face the music and turn my life around for eternity with God.

Hebrews 4: 1-2 says, “Therefore, since the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard it did not combine it with faith.”

Faith is about trusting God, you will never work it out in your head, you will never understand all of it but you must trust His judgement and make the call tonight by faith.
