The issue of Eternal Judgment is a very important one. It seems from reading what Christian people write on Facebook that there is a lot of confusion on this point. It isn't something I've heard many sermons on over the years, and yet the Scripture teaches that the Doctrine of Eternal Judgment is in fact a FOUNDATIONAL doctrine which babes in Christ ought to understand before moving on to more solid food teaching concerning righteousness.
The big question is "Who will enter the Kingdom of Heaven?", "What are the Marks of those who are on the path of life?" – if indeed it be a path, as I believe the Scriptures do affirm.
A question of secondary but still major importance is "How will God reward the righteous? How will God evaluate the fruit of my life?"
If God wills we will look at these questions on this site.
Neither you, nor I, nor any person on this site is going to be the one who will make the final judgment on whether you or I or anyone else shall enter Life Eternal. Jesus made the claim that this matter has been delegated by the Father to Jesus Himself.
Jesus then tells us how He will be judging.
God has given us and understanding of how He will be executing judgment. It will be ACCORDING TO THE WORDS SPOKEN BY JESUS. Which words? I would say: the words spoken in the gospels themselves.
God is not enthusiastic about sending anyone to hell. You see the Father doesn't want to judge people Himself. He gives it to Jesus. And Jesus says it will actually be the words which He has spoken which will judge people on the last day.
If this is true, then is it wise to enter into eternity wilfully ignorant of what Jesus said on the subject of your eternal salvation? Are you happy to trust what your preacher has said, or what he said that the apostle Paul said, without checking out all these things yourself, and harmonizing it with the words of Jesus? It might be extremely unwise to do that, based on some of the things Jesus said.
You say you believe in Jesus? Do you mean that you believe in the same Jesus that said the following things? To wit:
"Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able."
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
and everything else in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 through 7).
Paul said things in different ways, but his message is totally consistent with what Jesus taught. Paul did not teach that people who live unrighteous lifestyles have that kind of faith that pleases God and gets them into heaven.
"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
(1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
(Galatians 5:17-21)
Folks, the Spirit of God is never going to lead a person into these kinds of sins. God never promises that a person who is led by the flesh is "not under the law". So please take Paul, AND JESUS seriously in what they are saying here. And do not allow any preacher to DECEIVE YOU. God speaks through His Word. And He makes important issues SIMPLE to understand. The truth may not be easily to swallow, but that doesn't change what is truth.
Living Faith is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY TO SALVATION
We are not going to get anywhere by simply "trying hard" not to sin in our own power. In this wicked age, and with our corrupt human morality and nature, this won't work. Christianity is not about what we can do by ourselves. If it was, Christ would not have died, rose again and sent the Spirit. Christianity in its true form is about God who died to pay the price for our sins, rose in newness of life to prove who He is, and sends the Spirit to empower us with grace for holy living so that we can be children of God in nature and in capacity to bless.
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."
(Hebrews 11:6)
This verse teaches us that unless we are diligently seeking God, we can't even come to God. Real faith goes after God, believing that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. And with this the Scriptures of the gospel agree:
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled."
(Matthew 5:6)
I mentioned "Living Faith". I do this because God refers to "dead faith" in the Book of James. It says that "Faith without works is dead, being itself alone". James 2:26 says:
"For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
The kind of works that God is looking for with faith are works that prove that you actually do believe what you say you believe. It is acting in obedience to the prompting of the Spirit of God within that produces the works that God requires. Those who habitually reject the Spirit or know nothing of the work of the Spirit in their lives are NOT saved. It really doesn't matter if such people SAY they have faith. They don't have the kind of faith that GOD requires, and that is all that is important when it comes to the issue of Eternal Judgment.
By God's grace I will write more on this important subject later, this is just an introduction to some of the important factors relating to this teaching.
What Did Jesus Teach About the Judgment and the Resurrection?
I quote the Lord Jesus from the gospel of John here:
24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into Judgment, but has passed from death into life.
25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,
27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.
28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice
29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. (John 5:24-30)
Verse 24: Jesus begins with good news. And this is that those who HEAR HIS WORD and BELIEVES IN GOD WHO SENT JESUS will not come into Judgment. Such a person has passed from death to life.
Jesus is saying that such a person has passed from spiritual death to spiritual life. The test of whether you have really come into this life is whether you really HEAR the Word of Jesus and believe it as the Word of Almighty God, the Highest Authority in Existence.
Jesus goes on to teach that all dead people will hear the voice of the Son of God. But at that stage, it will be too late to change your eternal destination.
There is a resurrection of life, and there is a resurrection of condemnation. All people will be resurrected, and receive new bodies. The difference here, according to JESUS, of who gets what kind of resurrection, relates directly to whether a person has DONE GOOD, or whether they have DONE EVIL.
Are good deeds important for salvation? Obviously YES, according to this passage, if we will just let it speak. But what kind of works are really GOOD? No one is good, Jesus said, except God alone. The only works which are in fact truly GOOD are those works which have been done "in God", by the grace and divine power of God, through faith. Those who hear with the heart the words of Jesus spoken to them, receive these words and believe them, are then able to do works of faith "in God". This is the characteristic of those who will inherit everlasting life and not come into the resurrection and judgment of condemnation. Those who walk by the Spirit and not according to corrupted human desires are the ones who are destined for the resurrection of life.
What Happens to Unbelievers and Christ Rejecters when they Die?
The Bible teaches that the default state of all mankind is that of being CONDEMNED BY GOD. "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." (John 3:18)
"We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one."
(1 John 5:19)
The default position of mankind today is that of being condemned and under judgment. This is because all men have sinned against Almighty God.
Jesus Christ was sent to make a way of escape for us. But if we reject God's only appointed way of escape, there remains nothing for us but a fearful and terrifying judgment.
We may not LIKE these facts, but if the Bible is true, they are facts nonetheless, and for this reason alone we should see what we can do to align ourselves with God's purposes for the salvation of others, if we really care about them.
A careful study of the Bible reveals that there are two "hells". The first is a temporary holding place for all unbelievers who live and die before Christ's Second Coming. This place is the immediate destination of lost people who die in their sins.
In the future, after the Second Coming of Christ some time, there will be a Great White Throne Judgment of God. At this judgment, books containing everything done will be opened, and also the Lamb's Book of Life. People will be judged according to their works.
11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
(Revelation 20:11-15)
This Judgment will be terrifying. Those who have been waiting in Hades will be given up and everyone will have their day in Court. Men will face the terrifying Supreme God and Lord in his anger. So terrifying that it says "from whose face heaven and earth fled away".
All those not found in the Lamb's Book of Life are cast into the Lake of Fire, the second death. This is the permanent hell. Jesus warned us in the strongest possible terms about this place. You and I need to cling to our Savior and depart from sin by all means if we want to be certain of avoiding this eternal damnation. The Scripture imply that it is possible for your name to be blotted out of the Lamb's Book of Life. Otherwise, certain conditional promises of Jesus Christ would make no sense.
"He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels."
(Revelation 3:5)
There isn't anything special about this promise if every person to whom it is written will stay in the Book of Life regardless of how they live and whether or not they overcome Satan. So then, let us press on to know the Lord, to be the overcomers whose names will be found written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
