Healing Through Deliverance

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” (Acts 10:38)

In the gospel accounts, there is plenty of evidence that physical healing and deliverance from evil spirits are closely related.

“And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.

“Then his fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed (Gk: daimonizomai – demonized), epileptics, and paralytics, and He healed them.” (Matthew 4:23,24).

When Jesus preached the message about the Kingdom, it was a message of God’s effective rule coming. The signs of the coming of the Kingdom included the destruction of Satan’s works. Amongst these are sicknesses and torments. These things often go hand in hand. They are both due to the operation of evil spirits in the bodies and souls of men.

Are All Physical Problems due to Demons?

I do not say this. If someone falls over and breaks their arm, the broken arm is not due to a demon. Sometimes such wounds are prevented from healing due to demonic infestation or a curse, but that is another matter.

Poor diet or overeating, especially of the wrong foods, can open the door for disease. This has been well established. If you fill your arteries with cholesterol, its not necessarily the devil’s fault if you have a heart attack. But if you have a spirit of gluttony – a very common problem amongst the people of God, then demons are related on the onset of disease, albeit perhaps not directly.

Having said this, a lot of internal diseases and disabilities involve direct demonic oppression. Demons may find access to a person’s life through some kind of generational curse, and this can mean that a person, even a Christian person, may be afflicted with multiple spirits of infirmity, which need to be driven out. Demons can work to reinforce sickness, and magnify the oppression over people’s lives. It is extremely common. Demonic infestation in Christians of one degree or another is at least as common as the presence of physical sickness in Christians. These things need not be. Jesus took our infirmities and bore our diseases at the cross. But the victory of calvary must be appropriated – otherwise for us, it is no more than a legal provision that we have neglected to our own hurt.

The Ministry of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ clearly had a ministry of total liberation. For Jesus, it was not enough to preach only about a legal state of righteousness with God without demonstrating the power of the Kingdom to make a difference in people’s lives! For example, Jesus did tell the paralytic man in Mark 2, “Your sins are forgiven you” but went further and demonstrated he had authority to say this by the next word, “I say to you, arise, take up your mat, and walk”. It is easy to SAY “your sins are forgiven you”. Anyone can say this, but not all can say it with authority from God. Some preachers will tell you your sins are forgiven when you are still clinging to them! Jesus did more than declare unseen and unverifiable things. By the same authority, Jesus told the paralyzed man in Mark 2 to walk – and it happened, SHOWING that there is more to Jesus’ authority than theological assertions.

Now God wants not only our souls but also our bodies to be free from satanic harrassment. Some people are only interested in the healing of their bodies, and they don’t expose the unrighteousness in their souls to the Lord, so the Lord has a free hand to move in their entire being. This is a serious mistake. Now God can do things for people in any order He chooses. He can, if he wishes, physically heal a person with all kinds of soulish issues requiring deliverance. God is sovereign. But many times, especially in the life of a believer in Christ, the healing of the soul takes precedence over the healing of the body, and God will not work unless certain issues are dealt with.

Deliverance from evil spirits at the level of the soul prepares us to receive from God at the physical level also. It also prepares us to move in the power of the Holy Spirit for the deliverance and healing of others. Many times it is the internal bondage to wickedness in ministers of the gospel that is limiting the flow of God’s power to others. Does that sound too harsh? Well, God talks, for example, about “an evil heart of unbelief that departs from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12). There could well be degrees of this – not all of them relating to personal salvation. Unbelief concerning certain promises of God could be a spiritual bondage that a minister of the gospel needs freedom from.

People seeking healing MUST forgive those who have wronged them. If we hope to extract justice from those who have wronged us, and hold the pain of the injustice in our hearts, we are going to miss out on a lot of God’s blessings. Forgiving others from the heart and “tearing up the IOU” so to speak – is an essential condition of deliverance, healing, faith, receiving answers from God, and even of God’s forgiveness. That is the teaching of Jesus. (See Matthew 6:14,15; Mark 11:25; Matthew 18:30). I have seen people who have been healed physically only when they yielded to the Spirit of God on this point. Jesus said God would deliver us TO the tormentors if we do not forgive our brother from our heart.

The verse quoted above in Acts 10:38 proves that SICKNESS IS A WORK OF THE DEVIL. Jesus healed those who were “oppressed by the devil” – not “oppressed by God”. If we can grasp this one thing, we can proceed with an undivided soul to wage warfare on sickness wherever we find it. Yes, God may be looking for other forms of deliverance in people’s lives at first, but we can be sure that He really wants them to be healed physically.

The gospels attribute much sickness and disability directly to the work of demons. When the spirit causing the physical problem is cast out by the power of the Holy Spirit and the authority of the name of Jesus, healing often happens immediately. The vandal must first be thrown out of the house before the house can be repaired. If we don’t get him out, and keep him out, our efforts to bring restoration could be in vain.

Illustrations of this fact abound in the gospels. Some conditions are referred to almost interchangeably with the demons that cause them. In Mark 9:17 it says:

“Then one of the crowd answered and said, ‘Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit’ “.

This man knew a lot more than many Christians. Many of us, if we met someone who could not talk, would be very reticent to think the person had a demon which stopped them from being able to talk. The tendency today even amongst those who believe in the existence of demons is to be so very judicious and uncommitted regarding the source of disease as to have little to say to our generation in this regard. In my view though, we won’t go far wrong if we treat all such cases as “mute spirits”. Unsophisticated? When did Jesus ever say to someone, “Go in peace. Your sophistication has made you well!”? Let us not try to be more sophisticated than the Son of God.

That is the way I was led to deal with the problem in India when a 12 year old girl, deaf mute from birth was brought for ministry. By addressing the demon of muteness – not once but several times, we got a great victory and the name of the Lord was glorified.

Why does Disease sometimes come back after prayer ministry?

One reason so many people experience relief and a measure of healing through prayer and the ministry of laying on of hands, and then lose the blessing, is their failure to be vigilant concerning the possibility that the demons that caused the problem are likely to try to return and cause the same affliction again. We are called to abide in Jesus, and follow Him. We have to be filled with the Word and the Spirit of God in order to give no place to the devil.

More Scriptures proving the relationship between Sickness and Demonic Oppression
One woman in Luke 13 was so bent over that she could not raise herself up. I’m sure if their physicians had our medical knowledge of today, they could make all kinds of interesting scientific observations concerning it. But Jesus simply declared a word of freedom and the woman was healed. Her back straightened. In talking about the incident, Jesus called this woman a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan had bound (Luke 13:16). And the Bible account says this woman had a “spirit of infirmity” for eighteen years (vs 13:11). If a righteous woman could have a spirit of infirmity then, why could a Christian not have a spirit of infirmity today? It is not a sin to have a spirit of infirmity. What is shameful though, is that we are many times so ignorant and ineffective that we don’t deal with these spirits and get them out of the temple of the Lord – which is our bodies.

“Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw.” (Matthew 12:22).

Jesus referred to this incident in the verses that followed as “casting out demons by the Spirit of God”. We see therefore what is going on. The demonic power had gotten into that boy, attacking him physically. His eyes, made by God with the purpose of seeing, were stopped from working by the rotten devil. Same with his speech capacity. Jesus drove the demon out, and the man saw and spoke. Simple.

Deliverance as a Key To Healing and Healing Ministry

If we have faith to cast out demons, we are far better equipped to minister healing in some of those “difficult” cases. And as we grow in experience, our faith grows in dealing with demons. We have a growing measure of the power of God effectively working in us, which allows us to deal with increasingly severe demonically caused problems, as the Lord leads us. Our faith grows as we see how the Lord changes lives through the ministry of deliverance he operates through us.

Ministers who do not have this understanding concerning can still be effective in divine healing, but I believe they do so with less understanding. The anointing will drive out the devil, even if the minister does not imagine the devil to be involved. But when you know it is that rotten devil, a righteous hatred can rise up in you through which the Lord can move to bring his power into a situation. It also helps us to realise even more that it IS God’s will to heal people. It IS God’s will to destroy the works of the devil, of which sickness is one. And it IS God’s will to keep his promise. Therefore, lets use all the spiritual weapons God gives in order to destroy sickness and disease, and may God use this for his glory and for the true salvation of many souls. How to Apply this Knowledge When ministering, you may be in a counselling situation. In such a situation, issues may come up and you may be able to explain to the person things in such a way that they realise they need deliverance. You can then proceed to minister more methodically. In public ministry situations, God can give extra grace. You may be able to minister via a mass prayer. I have frequently rebuked demonic power en-masse, commanding it to leave the people, and many have received healing immediately. Just ask them to first thank God verbally, and then to do something that was difficult to do before. People with a simple faith can often receive in this way. In laying hands on people, you must first be filled with the Holy Spirit. You should use your faith to impart the power of the Holy Spirit directly against the demonic force causing the sickness. Tell it to leave, and do not doubt in your heart. Do not take the time to worry about whether God has done it or not – that gives place to doubt. As Jesus said, believe that the things you say will come to pass. This is how faith works (see Mark 11:23). I hope this article has been a blessing to you, and that through it your faith has increased. May God use YOU to destroy the works of the devil, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I feel I must share this testimony.

We recently had an offended brother leave our church, taking his family with him.  The offence was that he believed strongly that no christian could have an evil spirit, once filled with the Spirit of God.

The circumstances were thus:  My sister, who is a humble prayer warrior of God, was  asked by this brother’s wife to pray for her, because she had a problem of uncontrollable anger.  My sister asked her if she would be willing to rebuke the spirit of anger, and stand on the Word of God against it, by the power of the Blood of Jesus.  They prayed together, rebuking the evil spirit, quoting scirpture, etc.  This dear sister found great deliverence!  Such great joy filled her heart, and she felt great peace.

She went home and shared her heart with her husband.  Her husband became upset, because he believed that no Christian who has been born again, could be under the domination of an evil spirit. After all, in his opinion, they are filled with the Spirit from the moment of rebirth!  So, He had his wife call my sister and tell her that her theology was wrong in this area, and that she could not have had an evil spirit of anger.

The creepiest thing happened. As this dear sister was on the phone, in the middle of telling my sister that she agreed with her husband, just as she said that it was not an evil spirit, and that she should not have rebuked the evil spirit of anger, her speech became slurred.  She became unable to speak. She mumbled something about not being able to talk right then, and hung up. They left the church immediately.

The evil spirit showed itself to us, but decieved that poor woman, because of the mistaken demonology of her husband!

When did Christianity begin? It began at the cross. Not before. The veil was not torn before this and atonement for mankind had not yet been given.

Can we all agree that after the cross, everything changed between God and man. Now the Holy Spirit resides in each person who recieves Christ as Lord. Before, was the old covenant whic is dead. Col 2, Heb 7 and Heb 8 to just name a few places.

There are no scriptures aftr Jesus has given atonement for the world where a born again believer is ever prayed over to cast out a demon from them. There is also not one place where a generational curse is prayed over for born again believer.

It was common place before Jesus was glorified on the cross. I was in the deliverance ministry for 5 years. There is a lot of soulishness invlved in it. You are primed as you are taught how to do it. The person being prayed over is primed as they are told what may or may not happen.

There are no places after te cross and this was something I had to repent of.

    • You can’t just say that after the cross “EVERYTHING changed between God and man”. It isn’t a precise statement at all.

Before and after the cross, God required faith as the only way to approach Him.

Before and after the cross, God required repentance as a requirement of receiving His mercy.

The cross paid for the sins of those who were to be saved under the Old Covenant. The blood of bulls and goats could NEVER take away sins.

The Holy Spirit came upon people and was within certain people before the cross, just not as many.

People could give place to the devil before and after the cross. (Ephesians 4:27).

The main significance in the New Covenant is the direct access to God’s presence for ALL who put their faith in God, based on the perfect sacrifice of the Son of God which replaces animal sacrifices and temple worship, and the fact that the good news is now UNIVERSALLY offered to people of all nations, instead of primarily to the people of Israel and those who wished to take on Jewish nationality.

I would also like to state the deliverance was something BROUGHT IN by Jesus Christ – “what new doctrine is this?” the people said. Was deliverance only for 3 and a half years? Where in the OLD TESTAMENT is there any record of casting out demons? The only thing that comes close is in the music ministry of David which would grant Saul temporary relief from the evil spirit from the Lord.

I’ve made my scriptural case for this ministry on the website. You can’t dismiss it simply by waving the hand and saying that “the cross changes everything”. That statement isn’t true, it isn’t precise, it isn’t scriptural, and believing it is going to leave a lot of people in torment who could have been freed.

      • Tropical_Guy says:

In the New Covenant we all are priests and prophets. The Holy Spirit was not in believers before, but upon them. Moses did not as a Jew have the same relationship that we have today.

The word faith is used only twice in the whole Old Testament.

Deliverence in Christs time, was before Christianity even existed. It did not begin until he gave atonement on the Cross. He was fulfilling Jewish law and Christianity did not exist.

ONCE AGAIN. There is no place in the scriptures where a born again believer is EVER prayed over to expell Demons. No one, none of the Apostles etc were Christians until Jesus gives atonement.

Yes I can totally dismiss it. It has no scriptural basis because nothing is there after the Cross and Christianity begins. If it were needed it would be shared and be mentioned at least in a few placdes and there is no place.

Letusreason.org has a great scripturally based article on it. The word is actually rightly dived by context and not a muddle of a past, dead Covennt and a new One. Its new wine in new wineskins.

        Here is the article: http://www.letusreason.org/Pent24.htm

        In Considering Deliverance Ministries

        & DEMON POSSESSION

It has become popular today to rely on deliverance for the quick and powerful way to rid our faults and warfare. Those who teach demon possession in Christians are Neil T. Anderson, Peter Wagner, and a host of others. Ray Bubeck goes even further saying “I ask you to look all through the sexual organs and function of my body for any evil spirit activity he goes on to ask the Holy Spirit to “search out all my bones, blood circulation, nerve circuitry, muscles, tissues, glands, hair, skin and every cell for any wicked spirit activity against my physical body.” (Spiritual warfare basics pg.23 Mark. Bubeck)

With teaching Christians having demons almost anything can happen. What is neglected is the idea that they can lie and deceive those who are doing the deliverance! Satan can certainly have his demons control Christians from the outside as they give their will over into doing their temptations. Practicing Sin still creates bondage and can open one up to having little control over certain aspects in their lives.. This is called oppression and it certainly is different than possession. The word used in the gospels is demonized (Greek Diamonizomai) meaning to be controlled by a demon. The common expression is “to have a demon” Mt.11:18 which expresses residency. By this it means this entity can have direct control of a person from the inside. With this comes a certain degree of derangement in the mind or physical upset in the body. (Mk.5:1-20 Mt.12:43-45.) It best that one should distinguish control from harassment.

1 Thess.2:18 The degree of control is different for a Christian than a non Christian. As Christians the enemy can control from with out not from within even though at times it can seem the same as possession. With the believer deliverance is a matter of the will. With a non believer they have no spiritual authority 1 Jn.5:18: “He who is born of God keeps himself and the wicked one does not touch him. This is an assurance and is clarified in the Greek that he cannot lay hold of or fasten to. In Jn.17:15 Jesus prays that “they should not be taken out of the world but that the father should keep them from the evil one.” Again a provision of not being in a relationship with the enemy that we were formerly delivered from. We need faith to endure, because there is no promise of permanent deliverance from evil. We are always to pray for deliverance from evil (Mt. 6:13). as long as we are in this world there will be evil encroaching upon us. There is no prayer , method or incantation for relief, just faith to persevere.

1 Jn.5:21 John tells the believer “to keep from idols” while the scripture is clear behind an idol is a demon, John does not tell us to keep from demons. There is no concern raised like this anywhere in the Bible. We are warned of the unfruitful works of darkness but the bible never teaches that light becomes darkness unless in the case one abandons the faith.

The Biblical concept is that man is comprised of two components. The material body and the immaterial spirit. Those who promote Christian demonization say that the unclean dwells in our body and not the spirit. What they overlook is that the old nature still dwells in us and that it expresses itself by the body. Yielding to the desires of the flesh can bring one into bondage but this certainly cannot be put in the same category as demonization. While it makes one do the will of Satan instead of God it should not be confused with occupation. In Gal. 5:19-22, much of what is blamed on demons is really man’s fallen nature, expressing itself through his flesh. Demons can entice and exaggerate our fleshly weaknesses but the blame lies in ourselves .

While demonic power can affect the outside of our body and our emotions and minds they can never come into the innermost man, one needs to distinguish between oppression and possession .Satan has a limit in dealing with a believer otherwise we are no better off then one who is a non believer. If every time they sin it is blamed on demonic activity than what would be the difference when we sin. Then Christ cannot protect His people.

Demons cast out of Christians are not seen in the scriptures. Neither are they left over from the old life nor new occupants. The scripture absolutely militates against this. We are the temple of God not of both God and the devils emissaries. What a confusion for those involved in binding their own personal demon spirits.

Larry Thomas warned against what is being promoted as demon invasion in Christians. “The real potential for problems in the Christian life is blaming things on the demonic and neglecting normal Christian growth and maturity. It is this kind of lack of maturity in the lives of many believers, because they are looking for the quick fix of a Neil Anderson deliverance, that will prove the greater damage. I am concerned that believers wake up to the false ways of Dr. Anderson.” (Biblical Perspectives Vol.V, no.3 1992)

Gil Rugh comments on this by saying “Believers cannot be possessed by demons…The scripture is clear on this matter. …Christ’s work was sufficient. There is no further deliverance that must take place. If there were, salvation in Christ would be incomplete. If the church would stop and think through its theology of scripture we would realize that something is drastically wrong with what is being promoted by those who teach that believers can be demonized.” (Gil Rugh Demonization and the believer- an unbiblical teaching exposed, pg.26 1994)

Paul writes of the spiritual army of the devil that he lists in Eph.6: 12 in Col.2:15 “Having disarmed principalities and powers He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.” The devil and his angels fate is already sealed yet God allows them to continue. But they have no power over a Christian. He works in the sons of disobedience and will continue to do so until he is bound by God, not us. He can lie to us and lead us into sin by its a matter of our will bending to his lies. all one has to do is resist and he is defeated.

As Christians we are Christ’s possession owned by God. (1 Cor.6:20, 1 Jn.4:15) We have been bought with a price and are born again of incorruptible seed 1 Pt.1:23. 1Jn.4:4 tells us “Greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.” The Holy Spirit is able to keep us separate and clean when we allow him to do so. If we give in we can’t say he is weaker it really is a matter of choice and an exercise of our will. For one to believe in Christian demon possession a number of factors need to be ignored. Christ is our good shepherd would he let his people get wolfed. While we may unwittingly step over the line this does not annul the grace and protection of the Lord. This would mean God deals with us as a legalist every time wittingly or not we violate his boundaries we lose his protection and are at the mercy of the enemy. It is true that certain areas need to be avoided like the plague (the occult, sex outside marriage, homosexuality, and various altered states of conciousness). Yet God is greater than these. If not there are no guarantees for anything when do wrong. we would walk in a state of paranoia not victory.

God does not sleep on the job, nor has he put his protection in our hands and strength. We are to be strong in the grace of the Lord not be paranoid of the enemy.

In Eph.4:27 we are told not to give the devil a opportunity (foothold, a place, a beachhead. this is a military term meaning to capture an area within enemy territory. We can give areas cover to the enemy because they are not submitted over to the Lord. In Eph.5:18 He also tells us to be continually filled with the Spirit. We cannot have a victorious Christian walk without yielding and submitting to Gods ways. To be filled means to be controlled by the Spirit which means not being disobedient and doing what is right in the Lord’s eyes. The cure for one taken captive in disobedience is Jm.4:7 “Submit yourselves to God “first” ( whatever you are disobedient in change your behavior by yielding to the Spirit) “then” resist the devil and he will flee”. If you are dead to the sin he is tempting you with he cannot make you react. Peter also agrees stating “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the Devil, as a roaring lion, walks about seeing who he may devour, whom you are to resist steadfast in the faith”. We are not to have power encounters and conversations but stand in the Lord by faith, “trust” we lean on him the battle is his, if we lean on ourselves the battle is ours. The main objective is to give up no ground to the enemy .

Paul says we were once of darkness now we are light. Light always rules over the darkness. Try bringing darkness in the room when the light is on. Only if there is no light there can there be darkness. Scripture never says that we can go on and off like a light switch.

While the scripture says that the Holy Spirit can dwell with sin and that He can dwell in the presence of a demon. It certainly is different to say a demon can dwell with the Holy Spirit. We see the violent reaction of demons to the presence of Jesus and what is Holy. God does not have to flee but demons do. The Scripture shows them in agony just being near Jesus.

1Cor. 3:16: “do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you.” It is not the Holy Spirit plus a demon or demon’s!

The consequences of believing one is possessed can certainly be even more devastating than actually being inhabited. The focus than shifts from actually dealing with the problem and taking responsibility for one actions to blaming it on a unseen enemy a demon which is not even there. The lie of having the demon can be just as bad and what one really needs deliverance from is the lie of being inhabited with so called possession.

In deliverance services we are told to find out the head demon by asking his name and the rest will follow. At the time of Jesus their were exorcisms performed within Judaism. For this to be accomplished the exorcist needed to communicate with the demon. In this exercise the name of the head demon would be invoked and told to leave any other sub demons would also have to obey. Today the name of Jesus is petitioned for power used as a incantation from everything such as releasing wealth and healing and certainly to take back things for god.

Deliverance ministries are conducted in various forms from personal counseling to group deliverance’s. This consists of people walking around the room and led to people by the spirit speaking to them. They then lay their hands on them and call out the head strongman first and the rest eventually follow. Names such as Leviathan, spirits of anger, jealousy and religious spirits are called out. Ancestral curses are broken also. All these so called demons are listed as works of the flesh that we all are still capable of doing. Deliverance books are written like psychological manuals that claim that if one follows this methodology they will be successful, with the help of the Lord of course. Much of what is derived in these books is from personal experiences which are outside Biblical parameters and certainly not mentioned in Scripture.

  4. I have been a Christian for almost 40 years.
I am concerned that I have a spirit of gluttony. I have no power over my eating. And my main diet is junk food. I can’t stop myself.
Could you please pray against this for me. I need help.

  5. Diederik says:

    Dear Micheal,

When I first heard of this practice of deamon exorsisom I thought it was something of movies and I still am very sceptic about the matter. I live in the Netherlands and the people here are not very religous. I am very lucky with my in law’s, they show me a way with god every day.

I want to know more but I am afraid to look on the internet. I a noob on the subject. could you guide me to some websites or interesting articles for beginners

    thank you

  6. thankyou for this article. My sister is waiting on her healing from a brain haemhorrage. The lord has spoken and said it will happen. I’m sure this artical will encourage her. Thanks Mike! Dré

  7. My, my, I can practically cry at the relief that I’m not alone! Michael, I have been cast aside, put through coals with other believers that I know for saying the exact things that you have said. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for validating exactly what I went through. I was sick for 20 years and when the Lord led me to deliver myself from a spirit of infirmity, I was scorned by my fellow Christians who told me that’s impossible, that Christians don’t have spirits. Then when 2 days later, I started to feel sick again, I again delivered myself and thought I was crazy the first time. Praise God for you and your precious words, I am once again back on the right track in Jesus. AMEN!
