Sangliana calls Karnataka leaders to account for atrocities in India

BANGALORE, KARNATAKA, INDIA : -- Leaders of the Janata Dal (S) (the ruling political party of Karnataka state), including the Chief Minister and the Home Minister, should be held more responsible for the growing atrocities against Christians, said H.T. Sangliana, an Indian Member of Parliament speaking in Bangalore on Thursday, September 20, 2007.

According to THE HINDU newspaper, he was speaking at a press conference organized by the Karnataka Chraista Ranga (Karnataka Christian Forum), where he was reported as saying, "There has been no assurance from either the politicians or the police that anti-social elements will be dealt with according to law."

Referring to what he called the "inactiveness" of the leadership; Mr. Sangliana said the State needed a Home Minister who was "strong and vigilant."

He added that the Karnataka Chraista Ranga would hold an "awareness rally" on September 22 in Bangalore.

"I have not seen any policy of the BJP which is against the freedom of religion and I don't think there is anyone in the BJP* leadership who has encouraged anti-social activity in the State."

* BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is India's largest political party.
