How To Overcome Sin

Sin is a "me-first" self-pleasing attitude of heart which denies God's authority to direct our lives and our world. Sinful actions such as theft, adultery and blasphemy spring from a heart corrupted by the power of sin. There are two root sins - one is pride and the other unbelief. Pride is evidenced by an attitude which is demanding and arrogant, denies its need for God, is unteachable, impatient, overly critical of others and hard hearted. How easy it is for any one of us to be infected with pride without realising it! Unbelief also, is the root of much sin. If we really believed in God's goodness, wisdom and love, what motive would remain for not doing things God's way? These attitudes hurt the heart of God and often cause insensitivity to others as well, resulting in us saying and doing things that were better not said or done.

Sin always takes more than it gives. Whatever you gain by compromise you will eventually lose. Sin is the deadly human condition which opens the door to Satanic oppression and God's displeasure and judgment. Sin definitely creates a barrier to true communication with God. The wages of sin is death. Primarily, this refers to spiritual death. God loves us and wants us to overcome sin. He knows we are powerless to do it by ourselves, and for this reason has given us divine resources in our warfare against evil and sin.

Every attempt to overcome sin by willpower, resolutions and self-discipline alone WILL fail. No attempts to overcome sin by observing laws and rules, however strict, will ever work. But the Bible says, "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not fulfil the lusts of the flesh" (Galatians 5:17). That means, be governed by impulses coming from the Holy Spirit in your human spirit, and you won't be ruled by the natural thinking and desires that draw people away from holy living.

Romans 6 and Romans 8 are probably the most important passages of Scripture relating to this subject. I'd like to take some verses from them and make some comments.

"Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit" (Romans 8:5). What does your mind dwell on? What do you choose to set it on? To overcome sin you must have a deliberate policy to set your mind on the "Things of the Spirit". If that is not your policy, make it so today. The things of the Spirit include the presence of God, the love of God, the fruit of the Spirit, the gifts of the Spirit (which involve supernatural communication with God), the Word of God and their application to life. The things of the flesh which we are not to set our mind on include any kind of lust, selfish ambition, greed, envy, jealousy, hatred, bitterness or prideful thought. We can't avoid these tho

Hello Tropical Guy,
I hope you will take this as dearly warning from brother who loves you. I confidently say that you are on wrong way and wrong theology. I mark sin tightly than I do to the devil, In fact, if the devil wasn't all about sin I couldn't waste my precious time to preach Jesus to the world,It is sin! So if you are not concerned about sin, Take care!

I read one post by Bona fide Calvinist, who accused Dave Hunt of being a catholic Jesuit implant. In fact I don't believe that due to the reason that, he accused Dave simply because he wrote a book exposing Calvinism, showing it is a catholic doctrine. I haven't read the book and I have enjoyed a lot of books by Hunt and I don't see if this is solid reason to say somebody a Jesuit simply because he cannot advocate OSAS.

My final recommendation is you take a bunch of Calvinistic doctrines you have and put them in one scale and take testimony from the bible on another side of beam balance. If the Calvinism stands the measure, follow it, if not throw it away. This is the best way to discern things

Sin isnt the issue

Jesus dealt with tat on the cross. If you concern yourself with that, you will not be living with the intention that God has for you. Its about Jesus living through you.

Please stop posting your heresies

Tropical_Guy, you are no longer welcome to post on this board. I can and will delete your posts. If you think that this is wrong, don't worry - by your own confession, "its not an issue".

Was the apostle Paul wrong because he was concerned about sin in the churches? Listen to what he wrote:

"But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ" (2 Corinthians 11:3)

"Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits". Awake to righteousness, AND DO NOT SIN; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. (1 Corinthians 15:33,34)

"besides the other things, what comes upon me DAILY; my DEEP CONCERN for all the churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?" (2 Corinthians 11:29)

This is just a small sampling of quotes from the epistles where the writer urges his readers to beware of sin. The Book of Hebrews contains multiple severe warnings.

I consider your particular lines of teaching so dangerous to the spiritual health of my readers that I request you don't post any more on this board.

You are against the deliverance ministry, and you tell people not to be concerned about sin, as if the pure life of Jesus will just pour out of believers automatically. You think that praying the word of God is "religious" and you doubt the conversion of men of God that I would say knew Christ more intimately than you ever have. Go and lead someone to Christ if you can, but don't post on these boards to lead people astray.

I just wanted to make a comment on something...Today I woke up and I had this bad feeling. It was like a confused, noisy mindset I was in. I couldn't shake it...so, I read Proverbs and all of the sudden I experienced an attack! (I know this sounds weird, but...) I suddenly felt not good enough..as a wife, mother, friend , child of God...I just felt like a failure. I don't think I've ever felt that low.

I tell you this because I just want to know why...I try to figure out and decipher everything and I just don't see what the purpose of the BAD thoughts were.

Anyways, I wanted to share that because the above posting really helped me :)

Thank you so very much
