Don't trust in objects
I agree, trusting in any physical object such as a statue or a crucifix is superstitious and idolatrous. Get rid of such things. God is a Spirit and He is quite able to protect us by means of real angels if we pray, fear God and put our trust in Him.
"The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them" (Psalms)
