Did Benny Hinn give false prophecies?

We like to believe in our christian heroes, especially those who seem to be so much more anointed than your average Christian. But with greater exposure comes greater accountability. The ability to raise funds and buy lots of TV time does not constitute God’s endorsement. If raising money was proof of God’s favour, then the Roman Catholics, the Mormons and the various gurus like Sathya Sai Baba would clearly have God’s favour even more than the most “anointed” televangelist. Benny Hinn is a skilled fundraiser, and he does preach the gospel at times – but has he stepped outside his calling when he has attempted to prophesy? He writes books on how well he knows the Holy Spirit, but was it really the Spirit who told him these things? For example:

“The Spirit tells me – Fidel Castro will die – in the 90’s. Oooh my! Some will try to kill him and they will not succeed. But there will come a change in his physical health, and he will not stay in power, and Cuba will be visited of God.”

It is now 2007 and only recently has Castro had health problems. He hasn’t died in the ’90s either. What are these prophecies supposed to mean, actually?

Or how about this one, apparently given at Orlando Christian Center, Dec. 31st, 1989.

“The Lord also tells me to tell you in the mid 90’s, about ’94-’95, no later than that, God will destroy the homosexual community of America. [audience applauds] But He will not destroy it – with what many minds have thought Him to be, He will destroy it with fire. And many will turn and be saved, and many will rebel and be destroyed.”

This is just telling so many gullible Christians what they want to hear. Which Lord was Benny referring to?

Please don’t be sucked in by all this nonsense. There is such a thing as real prophecy but I believe it is a fearful thing to give false prophecies on a massive public platform such as worldwide “Christian” television.

See http://www.aloha.net/~mikesch/tbn.htm for original audio clips of these and other false prophecies.
I do not agree with everything on this man’s website or the websites of others quoted here, but this in itself is not a sufficient reason to avoid referring to them. There are websites which point out some of the errors of Benny Hinn and others, but many of these website authors are at least partially in error themselves. You can view http://www.ondoctrine.com/10hinn.htm for more information.

I was present in Bangalore, India on the second night of Benny Hinn’s crusade meeting there. In this meeting he said with the Catholic archbishop on stage, “I love the Roman Catholic church with all my heart”. Was that comment motivated by the same spirit as motivated the apostle Paul to write, “If anyone comes to you and preaches a gospel other than the one we preached, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:8). Many big name evangelists have compromised with the Roman Catholic church and knelt down before the popes of this world – but the Roman Catholic church teaches a system of salvation which is entirely different to what even Benny Hinn would preach in his books or crusades. Does the truth of the gospel even matter today? What is this then, if not compromising with the powers that be concerning the gospel itself, in order to “win friends and influence people”? In that same meeting to my recollection there was no mention of salvation through the blood of Jesus, or repentance, it was all about Jesus as healer. However, of the more than 1 million people present, I would say that only the tiniest percentage of people actually received a healing. People came because of the marketing and presentation, but was God unfaithful by choosing to heal so few? We would do well to examine whether we are all following the Spirit of the Lord or just jumping on bandwagons for the sake of money or popularity. I heard the gospel was preached a little more on the third night, but I was not there, it just did not seem worth going to, even though I was in the city.
One thing I do know, is that a reporter fooled Benny Hinn by claiming to be healed of some terrible thing. Another boy that was prayed for on the stage went off and died shortly afterwards also. I don’t like it when people do this kind of thing to trap preachers, but it does illustrate that discernment is lacking.

Benny Hinn may have helped lead people to the presence of God where they have received from the Lord, but as a servant of God with a very high profile he may be responsible for leading many astray also if he propagates error and compromise along with his messages containing biblical truth. Please pray that God will raise up voices of pure truth to take the gospel to the ends of the world.
