Death: Heaven / Hell

Hope everyone had a great Christmas.

I have been thinking of something that this seemed like an good place to share.
(Might be fruitless talk….I’m not sure and just a little curious.)
In the word of God it talks about Jesus being a Judge: The whole “Matthew / goats and sheep chapter (25)”

I have always been taught that you go to either Heaven or hell WHEN you DIE.
Is there some sort of waiting period period before judgment day?

From what I have understood HADES was a place where EVERYONE had to go BEFORE Jesus resurrected. Do unbelievers go to Hades and do believers go to some sort of paradise as a waiting period? If so, can I get some word of God to back it up?

Just and interesting subject that I want to have some insight on.
Thank you Guys,
Josh

  1. Timothy Luke says:

There are four words translated "hell" in scripture. One is Hebrew – "sheol" which simply means the grave, or pit.

The corresponding Greek word to that is "hades" which has the same meaning.

The next Greek word, translated 'hell' is 'gehenna,' which comes from the "Valley of Hinnom".  In Jeremiah 7:31 we read, "And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart."

This valley is outside of Jerusalem to this day. In the days of Jesus, the place was a refuse, or garbage dump where fires were constantly burning. The bodies of criminals were often deposited there as well, from what I was taught in theology classes. In future, it is the lake of fire that will consume all the wicked.

The third Greek word for 'hell' is "tartarus" which is a place of restraint for evil spirits until the day of judgement.

My personal opinion based on the best I can make of the whole of scripture on the topic is that when we die, we are dead and await resurrection without consciousness. This is the pit, or hades, or the grave. The second death is when sinners are once and for all disposed of in Gahenna, or the lake of fire. Heaven will one day be on earth.

There has come much error in doctrine on this topic, into the church. (for those who disagree with me, I am the one in error 🙂 This is not a topic to strive over, however, as all things will be made clear to all people in their times. "we see through a glass dimly." says Paul in 1 Corinthians 13.

The main thing is that we each be about our Father's business, preaching the good news of salvation from death that will be the reward of all unrighteousness. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life." "all have come short of the glory of God."

Those are pretty interesting. That’s crazy that there was an actual dump for bodies called the valley of Hinnom, I definitely didn’t know that.

Yeah, I guess we should ultimately come to the conclusion that it is “fruitless” talk.

      Thanks for the reply though,
      In love and Jesus,

  2. Hades by my understanding was a place before Christ but if you read and study Revelation Hades isnt mentioned but hell is also remember the man on the right side of Christ being crucified Jesus said today you will be in paradise with me.So many christians dont want to think about Hell but I have been blessed with 5 differnt visions of Hell. The reason I say blessed is because it has put a huge burden in my heart to really write books and to put on seminars about the importance of stressing to people that hell is real.I am amazed so many christians that dont believe in hell but yet if you were to count how many timesJesus Christ himself talked about certain topics you would find out he talked about hell more than any other topic.Remember my friend in the spirtual relm time doesnt excist this is why when you have a God given vision, dream or an encounter with God,5 minutes of our time could mean 5 hours of our time and or 5 seconds of Gods time.So just press on and keep the faith growing and stay in the word……..Maybe Joshau you and I could meet some day and just talk about life.Be blessed Tim Thompson

That was a good answer. Waiting isn’t really waiting in the spirit realm eh?
Hmm..I do wonder what Jesus meant by “paradise”.
Sounds good to me Tim! I’ll talk to you later.
      In love and Jesus,
      Josh
