Archbishop Desmond Tutu rebukes the church for being “homophobic”

You can see just where we are today, how close we are to the end of the age, when church leaders who are widely praised by all kinds of Christians come out to bash those who want to uphold the teaching of Scripture. Take a look at this BBC world report where Archbishop Desmond Tutu is reported to have said in relationship to the matter where the US Anglican church consecrated an openly practicing homosexual to the position of bishop: the Anglican Church has seemed “extraordinarily homophobic” in its handling of the issue, and that he had felt “saddened” and “ashamed” of his church at the time.”

Tutu goes on to say, “If God, as they say, is homophobic, I wouldn’t worship that God.”

It seems that Tutu is now ashamed of holiness and the law of God, even as he “welcomes” the practice of what God in Leviticus 18:22 calls an abomination.

The word “homophobic” itself is a lie. You can be against homosexual practices without being afraid of them (phobia = fear), and this use of language is extremely dishonest. God wishes us all well, all of us, but only on His terms. God has no pleasure in the death of a sinner but rather wishes that the sinner turn from his sin and live. God is against homosexual perversion as well as all other sin and He is not going to change His standards to “welcome you” on your own terms into the Kingdom of God. God IS welcoming, but only to those who REPENT, not to those who seek to corrupt His holy people. The word “homophobic” is used by those who seek to label those who oppose what God opposes as haters of mankind, when the truth is, if you won’t obey God’s laws, and refuse to repent, you will be destroyed. Those who won’t warn the perishing are the ones who are truly indifferent to the wellbeing of mankind (or they are just unbelievers, take your pick). Do you really think God, who made the galaxies and the genetic code and understands all things, is impressed by the recent rantings of church leaders who seek to accommodate the prevailing moods and fashions of modern society?

Now homosexuals are very militant today, and whereas many countries formerly had laws banning sodomy, it is now virtually a crime in several countries to speak against the practice. There has been talk of banning the Bible as “hate literature” in various countries because of what it plainly teaches on this and other issues. For example, when Paul speaks on the sinfulness and degeneration of mankind, he makes specific mention of homosexual practice:

“Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due”. (Romans 1:27)

We tend to be concerned with the consequences of sin, far more than with the fact that we have hurt God.

“as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire” (Jude 7)

“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination” (Leviticus 18:22)

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the Kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9,10).

These Scriptures are plain. Reject them and you reject the Holy Spirit who inspired them. God will then give you over to a strong delusion, reserved for those who do not love the truth, but rather take pleasure in unrighteousness.

“And for this reason God will send them a strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” (2 Thessalonians 2:11,12).

Once God sends a delusion against you, you have had it. You won’t get out of the delusion so easily. Folks, it is happening today, at the top levels of the institutional churches.

Is the Bible homophobic? Is the Bible hate literature? Is God in heaven now wringing his hands and wondering how He could ever have been so insensitive and cruel as to allow these verses to be printed on the pages of our Bible? Has God realised in the last 40 years that he got it wrong, that he made a mistake?

Perhaps you would say, ‘No, but we can’t take the Bible seriously as an authority as if from God on these issues.’ Would you reject the Bible as being completely God’s word? When you don’t like what it says, you will now say that it is just the ideas of men, even perhaps “homophobic” men, who in a wonderfully civilized society such as hours (which murders unborn babies by the millions) would be locked away as hate criminals? If this is so, and the Bible is wrong, how can you really know ANYTHING that God has said? Will you trust your own heart? The Bible says that “the heart of man is desperately wicked and deceitful above all things” and “he who trusts in his own heart is a fool”. Know for certain that in going down this path, you have made yourself an ENEMY of God. “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself and enemy of God.” (James 4:4)

The governments of this world are firmly in the camp of Satan, the god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4), the “prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2), not of God, when they would lock away the prophet Moses and the apostle Paul as hate criminals and promote the leaders of Sodom and Gomorrah to positions of national honor and recognition. This fits in with what the Bible says about the end times, where the governments of the world will support the Antichrist, and a False Religious Harlot Church will sell itself for power and the approval of men and demons.

Will we see the institutional church come out in favor of adultery and paedophilia also in the days ahead? Nothing would surprise me now.

Homosexual sin is not the only thing which is bothering God. It certainly is not a major focus of what is on this website. God is also angered by our selfishness, indifference and greed also. There are lots of things that God hates, and yes, these are in the church also. Woe to the professing church today! “For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them” (2 Peter 2:21).

We don’t tolerate, condone or celebrate one thing God calls an abomination in order to focus our efforts on attacking other evils. We are against all evil of all kinds everywhere. Whoever is not for Jesus and His words is against him.

Though God condemns sin, He still longs for people to turn from all their sins and embrace Him in Spirit and Truth. If anyone desires a new life, no matter what they have done, they can come to Jesus and He will wash them, cleanse them and put a new Spirit within them. While we have life on earth, there is still this possibility.

It is not our hatred for evil that makes us right with God, but rather, it IS the precious blood of Christ. Its only the sacrifice of Christ for our sins that can make any of us acceptable to God. Because only the perfect work of Christ can save any of us. That sacrifice is effective only for those who turn from sin. Those who promote it and teach sin, though they wear the garb of senior church leaders, have made themselves enemies of God, even as the world applauds them.

About Michael Fackerell

The Christian faith is about Jesus. He came to save the lost. About Jesus Christ, Bible teaching, Testimonies, Salvation, Prayer, Faith, Networking.

  1. I am a born again christian. Before I got born again I had lots of gay man as my friends actually I only had gay man as friends. The day I got born again no one had to tell me that I needed to lose them as friends, however something in my spirit did not agree with me hanging around them anymore. I was new in this walk with the Holy Spirit I had no reason to think there was anything wrong with them.

I don’t hate my friends, I don;t judge my friends, I only wish they could know the truth. I believe that is demonic spirits that attack them, I believe they are not born like that. Since I got born again they started drifting away from. I remember they had not seen me in months and they called to say they were coming over to my place and I prayed to God that if their coming to my place won’t be good for my soul in the Name of Jesus they should not come in. I prayed for an hour. Believe it or not they never came inside my place they parked outside and told me they were rushing somewhere else. Yes they do change partners all the time this is not new, any woman since I was there who spends too much time with them becomes whorish.

I agree with Michael fully, however I guess that once the true Spirit oF God is upon you it filters things and things you used to like become things you avoid. I don’t hate my friends but my friends are opposing what my new life in Christ stands for. You can’t say why did God create them gay then you may as well ask why did God create Satan. People need to be aware of evil forces, the devil is not relaxing the devil works in ways that oppose every single word written in the bible. I get scared for people who question the Bible, I pray for them, I wish people could realise the world is coming to an end and people could come close to God, pEOPLE SHOULD STOP BEING THE HEARERS OF THE WORD AND START BEING THE DOERS OF THE WORD.

Also, the bible makes it evident that evil spirits can inhabit animals, as the story with the pigs who ran into the water.

  3. Cleanasfire says:

I have tried to share the word of God with Gay folks and I do love them with a hopeful heart. But it is hard. It is hard to be smooth and gentle on a topic that is clear cut. I have friends who are Gay whom I love very much. Sometimes they become so filled with demons that they cannot separate their true nature from the Gay Death style. I have expressed that it isn’t love that God is against. But when you quote them scripture as Pastor Tim and many other fine brothers and sisters do…They explode. This is a difficult-addiction male deficit bondage. This bondage requires heavy Holy Spirit intervention. I live in California and some think I am hateful. But we must relinquish all for Jesus Christ. I refuse to tell them that God is wrong and they are right. PRAISE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!!!!!

  4. Agnostic,

I hope you return to this site. If it is answers you are looking for this is a good place to start. I read your comments and I realized you sound just like I did. You don’t say anything about being homosexual, just that your upset with the intolerence. It doesn’t matter if your a homosexual or not. I can tell you one thing, you are a sinner just like me; just like everyone else posting comments on this site and we are all in need of a Savior.

Like you, I didn’t believe in Satan, evil and hell. Evil was just the absense of good. All Christians were hypocites. We should be more tolerent and accepting of other people. Also like you I wanted to find out more about God. I searched the web. I read my Bible. I argued with Christians. In the end, I found out that there is only one way to get to know God, Jesus Christ. I commeted my life to Jesus and everything changed. I had to change the way I thought about a lot of things. Not because of what I read or heard, but because in my heart I new what was right in the eyes of the Lord and what was wrong. I was not a homosexual, but I was having sex outside of marriage (the same thing in God’s eyes). I was imediatly convected and turned from it.

You can look for answers about God on the web, but you will only find them with our Lord and Savior; Jesus.

  5. Pastor_Tim says:

Only the Maker of ‘good’ can say what is ‘good’ and what is evil. Homosexuality IS a choice. Whether you began life predisposed to that choice or you grew into it, YOU can choose to come out of it. Thousands of “ex” homosexuals prove that point conclusively. Check it out at

Homosexuality is a bondage. It leads to multiple relationships that are so shallow and self seeking that the average homosexual will have hundreds of partners, and who knows how many diseases, before all is said and done. It does not fill the void within and the emptiness and hurt. You CAN be Free!! Or you can live in darkness and curse those who walk in light. No one here is going to try to force anything on you.

The fact that homosexuality greatly reduces one’s mortality rate speaks to its being against nature and to its leading to death, not life. Homosexuality wants to destroy you. I desire that you have life and peace that passes all understanding.

    • i respected you for your other post

      that respect has now gone

you clearly have no knowlege on the matter of homosexuality.
you have no reliable unbiased evidence to back up your claims.
It is not homosexuality that leads to multiple shallow relationships, it is shallow people.
I am quite frankly disgusted that you assume that homosexuals will have hundreds of partners etc.
do you really think they care about what you think of them because they love, they much less “curse those who walk in light”!

If homosexuality is so against nature then why are there homosexual animals?

A peace that passes all understanding is being able to love unconditionally, freely and without fear of being judged because of it.

      • Pastor_Tim says:

You ask, “If homosexuality is so against nature then why are there homosexual animals?” Because the world is fallen. There are many animals who eat their young. I guess that qualifies cannibalism as a natural and acceptable act. If all animals, or men, in nature were homosexual, not bi-sexual, we would not live to see another generation.

Here is the basis for my statement that shows I have no knowledge of homosexuality…. forgive me if I came across as someone who pulls things out of thin air.

Few “gay” relationships last longer than two years, with many homosexual men reporting hundreds of lifetime partners. Source: Pollack, M. ” Male Homosexuality,” in Western Sexuality: Practice and Precept in Past and Present Times, ed. P. Aries and A.Bejin, pp. 40-61, cited by Joseph Nicolosi in Reparative Therapy of Male Homosexuality (Northvale, N.J., Jason Aronsons Inc., 1991), pp.124-25.

50% of homosexual men over the age of 30, and 75% of homosexual men over the age of forty, experienced no relationships that lasted more than one year. Source: M. T. Saghir and E. Robins, Male and Female Homosexuality: A Comprehensive Investigation (Baltimore: Williams Wilkins, 1973), pp. 56-57.

In 1978, a study done by two homosexual doctors revealed staggering statistics. Of 685 homosexual men, 589 (83%) had 50+ partners in their lifetime, 497 (73%) had 100+, 394 (58%) had 250+, 284 (41%) had 500+, 182 exceeded 1000 partners, an astonishing 26%. And 79% noted that over half their sexual contacts were total strangers. Source: Bell, A.P. and Wienberg, M.S. ” Homosexualities: A Study of Diversity Among Men and Women ” (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1978.)

Another large survey found that only 7 % of male homosexuals had been in a relationship that had lasted more than ten years. Source: K. Jay and A. Young, The Gay Report, (New York: Summit, 1979), pp. 339-40.

Homosexual author Seymour Kleinberg: “The prodigiousness of sex really depends deeply on change, and promiscuity is the easiest kind of change for gay men.” Source: Seymour Klienberg, Alienated Affections (NY: St. Martin’s Press, 1980), p. 171.

In a 6-month long daily sexual diary, gay men were averaging somewhere around 110 different sex partners per year. Source: Corey, L. and Holmes, K.K., ” Sexual transmission of Hepatitis A in homosexual men,” New England Journal of Medicine, 1980; Vol. 302, pp. 435-38.

A 1981 study found that only 2% of homosexual could be classified as monogamous or even semi monogamous (having ten or fewer lifetime sexual partners). Source: Bell, A.P., Weinberg, M.S., Hammersmith, S.E., Sexual Preference, 1981, pp.308-9.

        • then it strongly supports the claim that homosexual behavior is more about sex as a means of gratifying physical and emotional desires for selfish reasons and not very much of showing love for someone you really like and have a strong commitment to.

Even if the statistics are exaggerated by a factor of 2, they would still show a lot of about the nature of homosexual “love”.

          • Michael,

Just wish to point out this is a series of unrelated studies by numerous sources. It really points out the futility of the “life” rather deathstyle, these individuals are trapped in. There is no fulfillment in it or they would not be driven to such lengths to get a ‘hit’ of some sort.

Thanks for this website. It is Thanksgiving Day in America and I give thanks to God for you and your ministry!

  6. There is no difference between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament. The question you should ask is not, “Do I like what God’s law says”, but “is it really God who is saying theses things?”. God is loving and wishes men well but only on His terms. Reject God and his laws and you are already under condemnation. That is what the Bible teaches in the New Testament also. See John 3, Romans 1.

If it isn’t God who is speaking, but just fallible men, you can just throw out the Bible. You can make up any god who pleases you.

Actually there is a kind of god that is all for homosexuality. He is also in favour of you doing whatever it is you want to do. His name is Satan. The Satanic Bible says, “Do as thou wilt is the whole of the law”. The Bible says he is the “god of this age”. The only problem is, this god is the one who is promoting every kind of selfish and destructive thing and whose agenda is to extract power by torturing you.

Yes, you can be as proud, greedy and hurtful as you please in satanism. Of course, others can be to you also.

Christians are to be kind to homosexuals, not violent or anything like that. We should treat people with kindness and respect regardless of their sexual orientation, and those who don’t are not pleasing God. However, come the Day of Judgment, God will judge every one according to His standards. Those who reject Christ and his sacrifice for sin will fail the test.

Thomas Aquinas was a Roman Catholic who said on his deathbed as he had a revelation of eternity that all his theology was as straw – it was all going to be burned up. So please don’t quote him as an authority.

Evil is not just the absence of good. It is the perversion of nature, in which ones own desires are followed above the law of God.

The New Testament does not teach that we are all God’s children. We are all God’s creation, but only those who repent and believe the gospel have the right to become God’s children. All the rest are “children of wrath” (Ephesians 2:2). You will find that the Old and New Testament are really consistent.

Jesus said to the Pharisees that they were of their father, the devil.

It is not just homosexual perversion that offends God, but even a lustful look does. All of us therefore are in need of God’s mercy. The question is whether we will yield to God’s authority or continue to rebel and consider ourselves wiser and better than God. Your choice, your consequences.

    • thankyou for reply michael

“We don’t tolerate, condone or celebrate one thing God calls an abomination in order to focus our efforts on attacking other evils.”

“Christians are to be kind to homosexuals, not violent or anything like that. We should treat people with kindness and respect regardless of their sexual orientation”

these two statements of yours are ever so slightly contradictory.
How can we not tolerate and be kind?

Regarding Aquinas, i have read that later, others reported that Aquinas heard a voice from a cross that told him he had written well. He did not say that all his theology was as straw – it was all going to be burned up he said,

“I cannot go on . . . All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me.”

It is the lesson he learned from the transforming vision he experienced at a Mass late in life, after which he said that all that he had written seemed as so much straw. The lesson is not that all analytical theology is worthless. In fact, after his vision, Aquinas wrote a rather analytical letter to the abbott of a monastery where a dispute had arisen over the reconciliation of human freedom with God’s knowledge of the future. Even straw has its worth. The lesson, instead, is that theology is only a tool in the service of an infinitely greater spiritual truth that beggars our rational intellect.

“The New Testament does not teach that we are all God’s children.”

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God. Beloved, now are we the sons of God.
      1 John 3:1, 2

Ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
      Galatians 3:26

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God. Beloved, now are we the sons of God.
      1 John 3:1, 2

So a homosexual with faith should be a child of God shouldn’t he?

I have to say, that i don’t believe in Satan at all. I just believe in people that have a choice, to do good or evil. People that use “demons” as an excuse and scapegoat for their actions are weak. I am of course referring to perfectly sane people.

well, the debate has been fun michael but i can see that it will never get any where
you clearly believe with all your heart and appear to think that it is a fair enough substitute for reason and rational thought

      but i don’t blame you

If i could believe in God as much as you do, i would, i wouldn’t hesitate for a second, just to feel the security. whether i was right or wrong in believing would be irrelevant to me. Seems quite selfish, yes? Its no different to how many others beleive.

      i find your belief unsettling,
      no terrifying
as it is people with such belief as yours that would kill because they thought it was what God wished

one last question michael before i love you and leave you,

could you kill a man if you were visited by an angel that told you to on the behalf of God?

      • Thanks for your reply. Not sure if you will read this because elsewhere you say you aren’t coming back here. Too bad, I was enjoying your posts and I think you were raising good questions.

I am a bit tired now and so I won’t answer all your points but I will try to clarify my comments on tolerance and kindness.

Homosexuals are on a crusade to change the theology and practice of the church. They do this with absolutely no respect for what the Bible says in the passages I have quoted. This is what we cannot tolerate. Meaning, we cannot say – oh well, that is a nice alternative viewpoint, welcome to our fellowship.

This doesn’t mean we advocate violence against such people, or to treat them with contempt. It would be the same for someone who was in adultery. I can treat that person kindly and respectfully, but I cannot say, “Your adultery is no problem, you are my brother in Christ, come in and teach the rest of the church that adultery is O.K. and that the church has misunderstood God’s will for a a couple of thousand years”. I hope you get my point. I hope you can see what I am tolerating and what I am not willing to tolerate.

Christians have no right to have Christian fellowship with people who wilfully practice sexual immorality and teach others to do so. Such people need to be warned, not encouraged. But we should treat all people whether they are Christians are not with kindness and respect. You need to understand that the way I relate to a non-Christian is different to the way I can relate to a brother who is truly IN CHRIST.

  7. this is ridiculous
i came here looking for help in finding God
    instead i find this…

    you people just don’t learn
alienating people because of their sexuality, something they do not choose, and calling them an abomination is one of the cruelest things you ‘full-on’ christians find perfectly fine

do you really believe this is what your just and loving God wills?
You give me two contradicting ideas of God

The Old Testament God who is vengeful with the smiting and ‘not-to-be-taken-literally’ stories and the New Testament God who loves us all and says we should treat and love one another as we would like to treated and that we are all his children.
    Doesn’t that seem slightly contradictory?
Apparently, before we were conceived, God knew us
Are gay people then to be targeted because of how God made them? Are gay people not God’s children and, if they are, then why shouldn’t we treat them thus?

don’t try and tell me that homosexuality is evil either. Evil is the absence if a good which should be there, St. Thomas Aquinas said so himself. what good exactly are gay people lacking? It sure as hell isn’t love.
